[Song on Wind-Stroke during Pregnancy] Let me inform you of the ominous signs of wind-stroke: eyes closed indicate exhaustion of Liver Qi; hands flaccid and open indicate exhaustion of Spleen Qi; mouth agape indicates exhaustion of Heart Qi; snoring from the nose indicates exhaustion of Lung Qi; and incontinure of urine signifies that Kidney Qi is about to exhaust.
During pregnancy, if there are spasms of the hands and feet, sudden loss of consciousness, opisthotonos (body bent backward like a bow), and symptoms resembling wind-stroke, this is Zi Xian (Eclampsia). It is suitable to take Sharen Tang (Amomum Decoction). If, without cause before delivery, one suddenly faints and falls to the ground, or if it is misidentified by others and wrongly diagnosed as wind-stroke, this is an error. This condition is called "Zi Yun" (Fetal Dizziness) or "Zi Xuan" (Fetal Distension). It must be treated with methods to calm the fetus and regulate Qi, using Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction) added with Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Chuanbei (Fritillaria Bulb), and Fushen (Poria with Hostwood). Even when nearing delivery, continuing to take Zisu Yin is advisable. If panting occurs during pregnancy, it is due to fetal instability and invasion of Wind pathogen. Take twenty stalks of scallion white (with roots) decocted in water; this will cure it immediately. Scallion has dispersing properties and can also calm the fetus. If panting is caused by food stagnation, add Tongbian (Child's Urine) to Zisu Yin and decoct with Sharen; there is no other remedy. If Fetal Qi is disharmonious and rushes upward to the heart and abdomen, causing chest fullness, panting, urgency, and pain, this is also Zi Xuan (Fetal Distension), and Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction) is indicated. This formula has the efficacy of calming the fetus and preventing miscarriage. For lateral or frontal headaches during pregnancy, Chuangxiong Chatiao San (Ligusticum Powder for Tea) taken with tea water is the primary treatment. For colds caused by Wind-Cold of the four seasons during pregnancy, accompanied by Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome) with vomiting and diarrhea, Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi) is indicated. The treatment for Summerheat injury during pregnancy is the same as for Huoluan. For malaria during pregnancy, only Yingrong Tang (Nourishing Blood Decoction) is applicable. For hiccups and rebellious Qi in pregnant women, use Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction). There are cases where hiccups occur because the dead fetus causes Qi to invade upward; once the dead fetus is expelled, the hiccups stop naturally, which must be known. For food stagnation in pregnant women, use Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction) added with Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), Zharon Rou (Hawthorn Flesh), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), and Maiya (Malt Germinate). If accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea, use Yangwei Tang (Stomach-Nourishing Decoction). If a pregnant woman cries incessantly without cause, as if possessed by spirits, this is named Zang Zao (Visceral Agitation); only Dazao Tang (Jujube Decoction) can cure it. Sudden deafness and dullness during pregnancy is due to insufficiency of Qi and Blood; use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction). Red and swollen eyes are treated with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome). Generalized stiffness and tension, pain in indefinite locations, inability to sleep at night, and blurred vision or darkness in sight are caused by Fetal Qi; Zisu Yin (Perilla Decoction) is indicated.
