Answer: Blood coagulates when cold and disperses when warm. Abortion or injury to the meridians resulting in continuous bleeding has two causes: one is due to heat causing blood to flow and scatter, and the other is due to deficiency of Qi and Blood failing to contain it. Excessive blood loss will inevitably lead to death from restlessness and stifling oppression. If abortion is caused by wind-cold, the cold blood clashes with each other, and due to Qi deficiency with rebellious upward movement, the blood coagulates and fails to discharge. If the blood rushes upward to attack the Heart, restlessness and stifling oppression occur, which also often leads to death. In such cases, one should warm the meridians and expel cold, allowing the blood to flow naturally.
Jiao Ai Tang (Cordyceps and Mugwort Decoction): Treats excessive menstrual flow, dripping leakage continuing for days, and abdominal pain caused by labor injuring Qi and Blood and deficiency of the Chong and Ren vessels. It also treats fetal restlessness, abdominal pain, and bearing-down sensation due to improper care during pregnancy; uterine obstruction with leakage due to labor injuring the Bao Luo (uterine collaterals); lower back pain and mental confusion; fetal Qi rushing to the heart causing shortness of breath after trauma; and postpartum or lactational deficiency of the Chong and Ren vessels failing to control menstrual blood, leading to prolonged dripping, gradual emaciation, and weakness.
