Answer: When food enters the stomach, the mai (vessel/channel) pathways then circulate; when water enters the jing (channels), its blood is then formed. The stomach is the sea of water and grain. If the intestines and stomach are weak and are invaded by wind pathogens along with cold or heat qi, they cannot rot and ferment grain and food. This first leads to diarrhea, which subsequently transforms into li (dysentery/profuse watery stool). If affected by heat, the stool will be red; if deficient-cold, it will be white. Due to the internal deficiency of grain qi and the consumption/reduction of jin-ye (body fluids), li occurs while the menses unexpectedly cease. The classic states: "When li stops, the menses should naturally resume." Therefore, it is appropriate to treat the li first.
Da Duan Xia Wan (Great Decoction to Stop Diarrhea Pill): Treats persistent li.

Answer: This condition arises in women suffering from Shanghan (Cold Damage disease), where heat enters the xueshi (blood chamber). How do we know this? "Shi" means room or chamber, a place where things can stop. In the human body, the xueshi is the location where ying-blood (nutritive blood) stops and meridians converge; it refers to the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). The Chong Mai is called the "Sea of Blood." Wang Bing stated: "When Yin is still and the sea is full, blood flows out." The Neijing states: "When the Ren Mai is unobstructed and the Tai Chong Mai is vigorous, menstruation arrives on time." This is what is meant. If menstruation happens to occur and is constrained by cold pathogens, heat enters the xueshi. The symptoms include clear consciousness during the day but delirious speech resembling hallucinations ("seeing ghosts") at dusk. This is Heat Entering the Blood Chamber. Treatment should avoid damaging Wei Qi (Stomach Qi) and attacking the Upper and Middle Jiao (Upper and Middle Burners); the disease will heal itself.
Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats heat entering the blood chamber.
