Answer: Postpartum blood deficiency leads to loose interstices (the spaces between skin pores and muscle tissues), resulting in profuse sweating. If exposed to wind pathogen, the wind pathogen contends with healthy qi and transforms into "Wind" syndrome (referring to postpartum tetanus or similar spastic diseases). The manifestations of this "Wind" syndrome include trismus (lockjaw), rigidity and straightening of the back, symptoms resembling epileptic seizures, head shaking, sounds like a horse neighing, opisthotonos (arching of the back), occurring up to ten times within a short period, with breath so faint it seems as if life has ceased. One should quickly pry open the mouth and administer Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction). If the condition is slightly delayed, the patient will sweat profusely like rain, making it impossible to wipe with hands; such cases are incurable. *San Yin Fang* states: Since there is already excessive sweating, how can one administer diaphoretic herbs like Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) and Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi)? It is better to use Da Sheng San from the Ju Da Fang, which is also an effective medicine.
Xiao Xuming Tang (Formula see Question 98)
Fangfeng Tang. Treats postpartum wind-stroke with facial deviation, opisthotonos with frequent backward arching, and trismus.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) (1 liang) Puerariae Radix (Gegen) (1 liang) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang - *Note: Text says Shengdi, usually implies raw Rehmannia*) Leptodirii Rhizoma (Ben) Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren) (de-skinned and de-seeded, each 1 liang) Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo) (2 liang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) Podagricae Radix (Fangji) Viticis Fructus (Manjingzi) (each 7 qian 5 fen) Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang) (1 liang)
The above ingredients are crushed into coarse powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian, decocted in 1.5 cups of water until reduced to 0.6 cup. Strain and take warm, without restriction on time.
Answer: Women rely primarily on Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood). Due to excessive blood loss during childbirth, Qi loses its anchor, leading to cyanosis of the lips, cold muscles, sweating, closed eyes, and coma, with life hanging by a thread. This is merely internal Wind generated by extreme deficiency. In such cases, administering Jiwei Shangdan (Jiwei Upper Elixir) urgently is beneficial. Treating it with Wind-dispelling herbs would be a mistake.
Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang) Trogopteri Dung (Wulingzhi) Sulfur (Liuhuang) Taoyin Xuanshing Stone (Taiyin Xuanjingshi) (ground fine) Taxilli Herba (Sangjisheng) Donkey-Hide Gelatin (Ejiao) Serpylli Herba (Juanbai) (fresh) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (equal parts)
First, grind the aforementioned four ingredients together. Stir-fry lightly over low heat in a stone mortar, ensuring they do not burn. After frying, grind them again until extremely fine. Then add the powders of the remaining herbs. Mix with juice of Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang) to form a paste. Make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 20 pills with warm wine; taking them with Danggui wine is especially excellent.
Shenshou San. Treats all types of pain after childbirth, regardless of severity, even when critical.
Lilii Bulbus (Baihe) (soaked and washed in water) Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Ganjiang) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (each 2 liang) Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qingpi) Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin) Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi) Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (each 5 liang) Saccharomyces (Shenqu) (fried) Mescae Endocarpium (Mairou) (*Note: Another version by Wang Yutai uses Maltae Fructus/Maiya*) Ginseng Radix (Renshen) (each 3 liang) Carthami Flos (Honghua) (1.5 liang)
The above ingredients are crushed into coarse powder. Each dose consists of 2 qian, decocted in 1 cup of water with 3 slices of fresh ginger and 1 jujube, until reduced to 0.7 cup. Strain and take warm on an empty stomach. Pregnant women must not take this. For those with deficiency, remove Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi) and Carthami Flos (Honghua), and add Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) 3 liang.
