Answer: This occurs because the mother suffers from a febrile disease. After six days, the zang-fu organs become extremely hot, scorching and boiling the fetus, leading to its death. Since the fetus dies and becomes cold, it cannot expel itself. One should administer Heishen San (Black Divine Powder) to warm the fetal qi. Shortly thereafter, as the fetal qi warms up, it will be expelled naturally. How can one determine that the fetus has died? Simply observe if the parturient's tongue appears cyanotic; this is the diagnostic sign.
Heishen San (Black Divine Powder)
Guigui (Cinnamon Twig), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Jiangjiang (Prepared Ginger Rhizome) (each 1 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) (1 liang), Heidou (Fried Black Soybean, peeled, 2 liang), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) (0.5 liang; another version uses Puhuang/Typha Pollen).
Grind the above into a fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Wujin San (Golden Metal Powder): Treats postpartum blood confusion and syncope due to blood stasis, persistent bleeding of decaying blood, continuous dripping, umbilical and abdominal pain, dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes, weakness with excessive sweating, as well as metrorrhagia and hypermenorrhea with unceasing heavy bleeding. It is suitable for such cases.
Qilinjie (Dragon's Blood), Luankou (Human Hair), Songmo (Pine Charcoal quenched in vinegar), Baicaoshuang (Soot from burning straw), Danggui Tou (Angelica Sinensis Head), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Liyu Lin (Burned Carp Scales).
Grind the above equal parts into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine.
Heilong Dan (Black Dragon Pill): Treats all kinds of postpartum blood disorders where the patient is near death. Administering this medicine is invariably effective.
Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Gaoliangjiang (Galangal Rhizome).
Take equal parts of the above, place them in a clay pot. Seal the seams with Heshishi (Halloysitum Rubrum), reinforce with paper pulp and salt mud, and seal tightly. Roast over ten jin of charcoal fire until red-hot. Remove from heat, let cool, open the pot, and check. When it turns into black dregs, take it out, grind finely, and add the following herbs:
Huangliu (Sulfur, ground, 1.5 fen), Huarushi (Alunite, 1 fen), Ruxiang (Frankincense, separately ground, 1.5 fen), Hupo (Amber, ground, 1 fen), Baicaoshuang (Soot from burning straw, separately ground, 5 liang).
Grind all together into a fine powder. Make pills using vinegar-cooked paste, sized like bullet seeds. Take one pill per dose. Heat the pill until red-hot in charcoal fire, then drop it into fresh ginger juice and good non-fermented wine (each 1 xiaohe), along with half a zhan of urine. Grind until dissolved and consume immediately. Effect is immediate.
Xiong Tang (Chuanxiong Decoction): Treats postpartum syncope and unconsciousness due to excessive blood loss, as well as excessive blood loss from wound treatment, metrorrhagia, trauma from metal weapons (Jinchuang), and tooth extraction, where bleeding does not stop. This is due to heart deficiency causing mental restlessness, dizziness, dim vision, deafness and ear fullness, and a sensation of falling when lifting the head. All these conditions are treated by this formula.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Xiongxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (equal parts).
Prepare as a decoction. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, boil down to 1 zhan. Strain and drink while slightly warm. Take at any time.
