When a pregnant woman experiences profuse phlegm and saliva obstructing the airways, or occasionally has convulsions and loses consciousness, it is called Zi Xian (pregnancy epilepsy). The treatment should primarily focus on clearing Qi and resolving phlegm. This condition is mostly caused by Qi stagnation. The treatment method is the same as for epilepsy, only the dosage is slightly smaller. If nausea is severe, decoct Er Chen Tang (Two Matured Substances Decoction) to induce vomiting. After vomiting stops, regulate Qi and resolve phlegm, while also using Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria root) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, White Atractylodes rhizome) to protect the fetus. The ancient formulas, Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) and Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Root Decoction), have ingredients that are biased towards being acrid and dispersing. The practitioner should adapt the treatment according to the specific circumstances.
([Wu's note] Xian (epilepsy), commonly known as Yang Dian Feng (sheep epilepsy), is all due to phlegm-fire accumulating in the pericardium. Both men and women can have it, and it is most difficult to eradicate. Zi Xian in pregnant women should be discussed separately.)
Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn, 1 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese Angelica root, 2 qian), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, Double-teeth Pubescent Angelica root), Wujiapi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, Acanthopanax bark), Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pini, Poria with Pine Root, each 8 fen), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, Spine Date Seed), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, Coix Seed, each 1 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, Saposhnikovia root, 5 fen), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Sichuan Lovage rhizome), Xingren (Armeniaceae Semen Amarum, Bitter Apricot Seed, each 7 fen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, Costusroot, 2 fen), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Liquorice root and rhizome, 4 fen). If there is deficiency, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Ginseng). If phlegm-Qi exuberance has eased, use Renshen and ginger as guiding herbs. If there is profuse phlegm, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice). If the spleen and stomach are weak, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, White Atractylodes rhizome, 2.5 qian). Grind into powder for administration.
Treats wind rash occurring in the month approaching delivery, causing chest oppression, irritability, failure to recognize people, vomiting, dizziness, and collapse.
([Wu's note] Rash is always accompanied by cough. The cessation of cough indicates the complete expulsion of the toxin. The general principle is to use acrid-cool herbs to expel and disperse, allowing the rash toxin to vent outward and avoid inward sinking. This should not be taken lightly.)
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, Kudzu root), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, Fritillaria bulb), Danpi (Moutan Cortex, Tree Peony Bark, each 1 qian), Mu Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, Stephania root, 6 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, Saposhnikovia root, 8 fen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese Angelica root), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Sichuan Lovage rhizome), Fuling (Poria, Poria, each 2 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, Cinnamon Twig, 5 fen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, Water Plantain rhizome), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Liquorice root and rhizome), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, Double-teeth Pubescent Angelica root), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, Gypsum, each 4 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Ginseng, 8 fen). Decoct in water for oral administration. Avoid seaweed, fen cai (a type of vegetable), and vinegar.
If a pregnant woman suddenly becomes rigid and collapses for no apparent reason, with the left pulse slightly rapid and the right pulse slippery and large, this indicates blood deficiency. Yin-fire flares upward, stirring up phlegm. Use Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish blood, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, Scutellaria root) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis rhizome) to downbear fire, and concurrently use Er Chen Tang (Two Matured Substances Decoction) to resolve phlegm and downbear Qi. Alternatively, add Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice).
