Postpartum disharmony of Stomach Qi, incessant vomiting, and complete inability to accept food. Within seven days, if blood stasis has not been eliminated, one should focus on resolving the stasis, assisted by warming the Stomach.
Formula: Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (each 1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (2 qian), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), Agastegher Herba (Huoxiang) (each 4 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle (Zhi Gancao) (5 fen), Persic Semen (Taoren) (10 grains), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Jiang) (1 slice). If there is sweating, do not use Ginger. Within or around seven days postpartum, if Shenghua Tang has already been taken for three to four doses, and there is no pain from blood stasis but vomiting and inability to eat persist.
Formula: Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) (1 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Dolichos Lablab Semen Album (Bian Dou) (each 2 qian), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang), Myristicae Semen (Doukou) (each 4 fen), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (3 fen), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Poria (Fuling) (each 1 qian), Agastegher Herba (Huoxiang) (3 fen), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (1.5 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) (3 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Jiang) (1 slice). Decoct and take orally. After vomiting stops, remove Myristicae Semen (Doukou). [Note by Wu: Dolichos Lablab Semen Album (Bian Dou) should preferably be used with its shell.]
Postpartum vomiting. After taking the previous two formulas, Stomach Qi harmonizes, vomiting and pain cease. However, Qi and Blood do not circulate well, and appetite is poor.
Formula: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Dolichos Lablab Semen Album (Bian Dou) (each 1 qian), Poria (Fuling) (2 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang) (each 4 fen), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (1.5 qian). Decoct and take orally.
Postpartum physical fatigue and exhaustion. Even with small amounts of food, digestion and transformation are sluggish. The chest and abdomen feel uncomfortable. Therefore, there is no sour belching. One should not immediately administer digestive-promoting herbs. Even if it is food stagnation causing sour belching, nausea, aversion to food, fullness, and oppression, one should assist with digestive-promoting herbs within Shenghua Tang. If blood stasis is completely resolved, one should prioritize Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), with digestive-promoting herbs as assistants. If the condition arises from damaging various foods, taking too many digestive-promoting and appetite-stimulating herbs will反而 damage Stomach Qi, inevitably increasing deficiency-fullness and oppression, leading to a lack of desire for grain. Physicians may mistakenly believe that the originally damaged food has not yet digested and dare not use herbs to tonify Stomach Qi, often resulting in untreatable conditions. I treat this syndrome using Changsheng Huoming Dan, having saved many people.
Formula: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (3-4 qian). Decoct in water, mix with the powder of scorched rice at the bottom of the pot (Guodi Fanjiao) and take orally. [Note by Wu: Guodi Fanjiao is commonly known as Guoba (scorched rice crust).]
