After conception, it is forbidden to consume beef, dog meat, rabbit meat, sparrow meat, crab, soft-shelled turtle, snakehead fish, scaleless fish, as well as pungent and spicy substances such as pepper, Sichuan peppercorn, ginger, and garlic.
After conception, one must strictly avoid violent anger; one should not speak foul words with the mouth, nor use whipping actions with the hands. Anger injures Qi and Blood, often causing fetal movement instability due to this reason. Even if it does not cause fetal movement, anger entering the fetus may result in the child being prone to illness after birth. One should also avoid watching theatrical performances featuring divine statues, Nuo deity masks used in exorcism rituals, or images of strange and bizarre forms.
After conception, one must not climb high places or ladders for fear of falling and causing injury. One must not reach up high to fetch objects for fear of injuring the fetus, causing the fetus to cry out in the abdomen (Zi Ming). If the fetus cries out, having the mother bend her waist for a moment will allow it to settle naturally.
Between three and five months after conception, the body should be frequently bound tightly to prevent excessive fetal movement, but not so tight as to cause discomfort to the fetus.
In the seventh, eighth, and ninth months after conception, if the fetus suddenly moves restlessly, with pain that comes and goes over two or three days, or if amniotic fluid has leaked but abdominal pain persists without significant lower back pain, and the pulse has not yet changed to the labor pattern (Li Jing Mai, characterized by six beats per respiration cycle, or a deep, fine, and slippery pulse), this is not true labor, but is called "Nong Chan" (Playful Labor). There is also a condition where, one month before delivery, sudden abdominal pain occurs without actual delivery; this is called "Shi Tai" (Testing Fetus) due to fetal rotation. Neither premature rupture of membranes nor these conditions require panic; one should maintain an upright posture when sitting, lying, walking, or standing, and avoid fright, worry, or pressure. Both are not true labor, likely caused by bending or awkward movements.
The Classic states: "If breath does not circulate for even one moment, the mechanism of life ceases; if continuity is broken for even a hair's breadth, heaven and earth are separated." This refers to the continuous circulation of Qi and Blood throughout the body; any interruption endangers life. During pregnancy, the fetus resides in the abdomen, connected to the mother by a single flow of Qi, relying entirely on amniotic fluid for nourishment. After ten months, when Qi and Blood are fully established, and form and spirit are complete, the fetus awakens like from a dream and naturally seeks the path out. Once outside the uterus, mother and child separate, breathing independently. How can they remain inside long, preventing the circulation and continuity of Qi and Blood? If the fetal Yuan Qi is robust, upon rupture of the membranes, the fetus descends immediately with the amniotic fluid, making delivery easy. If weak, the turning is slow; the slower it turns, the more exhausted it becomes, leading to dryness of the membranes and amniotic fluid, coagulation of turbid blood, blockage of the birth canal, resulting in malpresentation (transverse or breech), fetal death in utero, and the mother's life hanging by a thread. The practitioner must nourish Ying (Nutritive) Blood and tonify Qi, ensuring the spiritual connection between mother and child remains strong and their physiological functions are effective. Simultaneously, warm the meridians and resolve stasis to clear the pathway, allowing the fetus to turn easily. With an experienced midwife assisting carefully outside, safety can be ensured. Do not exert force too early, wasting spirit and energy, or use harsh drugs to induce labor, which damages Qi and Blood. Childbearing relies entirely on Qi and Blood. Without medicines that tonify and support spirit and Qi, how can one achieve success in pregnancy and delivery? Merely damaging the harmony of Qi and Blood will instead lead to postpartum diseases. Zhang Li's Baochan Wanquan Tang (Preservation Decoction for Ten Thousand Completeness in Delivery) is meticulous and comprehensive, tonifying, connecting, guiding, regulating ascending/descending, and warming/moving. It is suitable for both the time of delivery and the postpartum period, truly ensuring completeness and safety.
