Zhu Danxi stated: The medical classics record that the breast belongs to the area traversed by the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and the nipple belongs to the region governed by the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Women who fail to maintain proper self-care may experience qi rebellion due to anger, qi stagnation due to depression, or damp-heat accumulation from consuming rich and greasy foods. This leads to impaired circulation of Qi in the Jueyin channel, causing the orifices to become obstructed and milk secretion to cease. The blood in the Yangming channel boils over; extreme heat transforms into pus. Treatment method: Use Qingpi (Cortex Aurantii) to disperse stagnant Qi in the Jueyin channel; use Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to clear blood heat in the Yangming channel; use Sheng Caojie (Radix Glycyrrhizae with node) to move turbid blood, reduce swelling, and guide out toxins; combine with Gualouren (Semen Trichosanthis), Moyao (Olibanum), Qingjuye (Folium Citri Reticulatae), Jiaoci Ci (Spina Gleditsiae Sinensis), Yinjin (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), assisted by wine. Apply moxibustion (Moxibustion) of 20–30 cones directly on the painful area for excellent results. One must absolutely avoid using scalpels or needles, as this will inevitably lead to critical danger.
Li stated: A woman's breasts and a man's kidneys are both the roots of life. Factors such as rich dietary intake, depression, and anger can cause Stomach Fire to steam upward to the breasts, transforming milk into turbid pus. Qi stagnation in the Liver channel causes obstruction of the nipple orifices, leading to indurated nodules that do not dissipate and unbearable pain. In the early stage, garlic-separated moxibustion is suitable; scalpels and needles are strictly contraindicated. For those capable of drinking alcohol, taking Yizui Gao (Intoxicating Paste) combined with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) for two doses yields effective results.
Shenzhai commented: The above three passages describe Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) as caused by emotional injury (Seven Emotions), dietary irregularities, and internal damage by heat-toxins.
Daquan stated: Postpartum "Blowing Milk" syndrome occurs when an infant falls asleep while nursing, and the infant's exhaled breath enters the breast, blocking milk flow. The milk accumulates internally, resulting in swelling and hardness, obstructing the milk ducts, causing injury, knotting, and pain. There are also cases presenting with no itching or pain but with stone-hard swelling and hardness, collectively termed "Blowing Milk." If not treated urgently, severe swelling may lead to suppuration. Continuous administration of Zaojiao San (Soap Pod Powder) and Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder), external application of Nanxing San (Arisaema Powder), followed by manual massage, can resolve the condition.
Zhu Danxi stated: If the infant being nursed has phlegm-stagnation in the diaphragm and hot breath, and sleeps while holding the nipple, the hot breath blows into the breast, causing stagnation that does not dissipate, thereby forming nodular lumps. If, at the initial stage, one endures the pain to massage the area until soft and sucks the milk through to ensure patent flow, the condition can dissipate. If this opportunity is missed and untreated, it will inevitably develop into a carbuncle or abscess.
Shenzhai commented: The above two passages describe Ru Yong (Breast Abscess) as a disease caused by non-internal and non-external factors, specifically the blowing of the infant's breath. The occurrence of breast abscess in women generally falls into three categories: first, external contraction of Wind-Heat lodging in the Yangming meridian; second, emotional depression and rich diet injuring the Liver and Stomach; third, heat congestion from the infant's blown breath failing to dissipate. All these are sufficient to cause breast abscess.
