[Eight Formulas from the Golden Cabinet and Nine Contemporary Formulas]
**Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)** (from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) is the primary formula for pregnancy. You Zaijing stated: "When the pulse appears abnormal without cause and the body is diseased, yet there are no signs of cold or heat pathogenic factors, treatment is difficult to apply; only Guizhi Tang can harmonize Yin and Yang." Xu Zhongke stated: Guizhi Tang, when applied to exterior syndromes, releases the muscle layer and harmonizes Ying (Nutritive) Qi; when applied to interior syndromes, it transforms Qi and regulates Yin and Yang. In early pregnancy, when there is no disease in the upper and lower parts, but stagnant Qi in the uterus overflows upwards and downwards, using only one herb, Shaoyao (White Peony Root), to consolidate Yin Qi prevents it from overflowing upwards; using Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube) supports the Yang Qi of the Upper Jiao and harmonizes Stomach Qi. As long as the Yang Qi of the Upper Jiao is sufficient to resist the invading Yin Qi, that is enough! This does not directly treat the disease, which is precisely how the disease is treated. Otherwise, treating thirst as pathogenic Heat by clearing it, or treating anorexia as Spleen deficiency by drying dampness, would indeed be erroneous!
**Guizhi Fuling Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Poria Pill)** treats women who have a chronic mass (Zheng disease). After three months of pregnancy, spotting occurs; after another three months, bleeding continues at the expected menstrual time without deviation. If fetal movement occurs above the navel rather than below, it confirms pregnancy. The reason for continued spotting during pregnancy is that old blood has not been expelled, preventing new blood from entering the Uterus to nourish the fetus, causing it to flow downward continuously. This formula first eliminates the mass, which is the method to calm the fetus.
Ingredients: Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Fuling (Poria), Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark), Taoren (Peach Seed, skin and tip removed), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) (equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the five herbs into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of rabbit droppings. Take one pill before meals daily. If ineffective, increase to three pills.
Song says: When the stubborn mass is not removed, it may harm the fetus; (Fetal movement below the navel indicates threatened miscarriage; movement above the navel indicates monthly accumulated blood; the Qi of the mass obstructs it, causing leakage.) Once the fetus is calm and the mass gone, understand the concept of new growth. Cinnamon Twig, Poria, Tree Peony Bark, White Peony, and Peach Seed are equal; they encompass the roots and branches of Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang.
(Notes by Grandson Xinlan): Guizhi and Shaoyao represent one Yang and one Yin; Fuling and Mudanpi represent one Qi and one Blood; combined with Taoren, they expel old stasis without injuring new blood. Forming pills for slow administration is optimal.
**Fuzi Tang (Aconite Decoction)** (Formula seen in *Shang Han Lun*.)
**Jiao'ai Tang (Donkey-hide Gelatin and Moxa Decoction)** *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: Women may suffer from spotting, continuous bleeding after a miscarriage, or bleeding during pregnancy. If abdominal pain occurs during pregnancy, it is called Baozu (Uterine Obstruction), treated with Jiao'ai Tang.
Ingredients: Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, six liang), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Gancao (Licorice Root) (two liang each), Aiyè (Moxa Leaf), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) (three liang each), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) (four liang).
Preparation and Administration: Boil the seven herbs in five sheng of water and three sheng of clear wine to reduce to three sheng. Strain, add Ejiao until dissolved, and take one sheng warm, three times daily. Repeat if necessary.
Song says: Abdominal pain during pregnancy obstructs the fetal sac; (Named Baozu because deficiency-cold of Qi and Blood in the Uterus obstructs gestation.) Two liang of Chuanxiong, Licorice, and Gelatin; Three liang each of Angelica and Moxa; Four liang of White Peony; Six liang of Rehmannia, removing branches and tips.
(Notes by Second Son Yuanxi): Chuanxiong, Danggui, Shaoyao, and Shengdihuang are blood-nourishing herbs. However, Blood does not generate itself; it arises from the grain and water of the Yangming Stomach, so Gancao tonifies it; Ejiao nourishes the Sea of Blood and is a key herb for all diseases of pregnancy and childbirth; Aiyè warms the Uterus and is a specific herb for regulating menstruation and calming the fetus. Combined, this is a divine formula treating Jueyin, Shaoyin, Yangming, and the Chong and Ren vessels simultaneously. Later generations removed Gancao, Ejiao, and Aiyè, naming it Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), making it rigid and inflexible. This interpretation differs from the main text; students should comprehend the underlying unity amidst these differences to realize that sage formulas change like divine dragons, unfathomable.
**Danggui Shaoyao San (Angelica and White Peony Powder)**
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Chuanxiong (three liang each), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) (one jin), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (four liang each), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) (half a jin).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the six herbs into a powder. Take one cun-bi (measure) mixed with wine, three times daily.
Song says: Pregnancy abdominal pain is lingering and mild; (Unlike the cramping pain of Cold-Heat or stabbing pain of Qi-Blood stagnation.) Three liang each of Chuanxiong and Angelica moisten and diffuse; One jin of White Peony and half that amount of Alisma; Four liang each of Atractylodes and Poria work wonders.
(Notes by Second Son Yuanxi): Abdominal pain during pregnancy often belongs to Blood deficiency. Blood is generated by Middle Qi (Earth). If Earth is too dry, it cannot generate things, so Danggui, Chuanxiong, and Shaoyao nourish it; if Earth is too damp, it cannot generate things, so Fuling, Baizhu, and Zexie drain dampness. When dryness and dampness are balanced, Middle Qi is regulated, Blood generates naturally, and pain stops.
**Danggui Beimu Kushen Wan (Angelica, Coix Seed, and Sophora Pill)**
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Kushen (Sophora Root) (four liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the three herbs into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of small beans. Take three pills with water, increasing to ten pills.
Song says: Diet remains normal but urination is difficult;郁 Heat in pregnancy dries fluids. Four liang each of Sophora, Angelica, and Fritillaria; Take three to ten pills with water. (For men, add Wutonghua/Slippery Elm five qian.)
(Notes by Second Son Yuanxi): Kushen and Danggui tonify Heart Blood and clear Heart Fire; Beimu opens Lung depression and drains Lung Fire. If Heart Fire does not descend, urine becomes scanty and涩 (obstructed); if Lung Qi does not move to the Bladder, water pathways are blocked. This formula treats lower pathology by addressing the upper source. Moreover, Beimu treats dripping pathogenic factors, as explicitly stated in the *Shennong Ben Cao Jing*!
**Danggui San (Angelica Powder)**
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Shaoyao (White Peony Root), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome) (one jin each), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) (half a jin).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the five herbs into a powder. Take one cun-bi with wine, twice daily. Pregnant women taking this regularly will deliver easily, the fetus will remain healthy, and it treats various postpartum diseases.
Song says: All things originate from Earth; (This regular pregnancy formula primarily tonifies Spleen Yin.) Earth containing moisture allows continuous generation. One jin each of Chuanxiong, White Peony, and Angelica nourishes Blood; (Blood is transformed by moisture, and the fetus relies on it especially.) Eight liang of Atractylodes and one jin of Scutellaria; (Atractylodes is a Spleen herb, now used as a Blood herb entering Spleen Earth; Earth gains moisture to generate life, and the bitter-cold Scutellaria clears the Spleen to govern it. When Lung Qi is unobstructed, Blood does not stagnate, thus life generation never ceases.) Great transformation completes.
**Baizhu San (Atractylodes Powder)**
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, three fen, sweat removed), Muli (Oyster Shell).
Preparation and Administration: Pound the four herbs into a powder. Take three qian-bi with wine, three times daily, and once at night.
If only pain is present, add Shaoyao (White Peony Root). If severe pain in the epigastrium, double the Chuanxiong. If irritability, vomiting, pain, and inability to eat occur, add Yixin (Asarum) one liang and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) twenty large pieces. After taking the medicine, swallow with vinegar-water. If vomiting persists, use vinegar-water. If still unresolved, drink wheat juice to stop it. If thirst develops later, drink barley porridge. Even if cured, do not discontinue use.
Song says: The fetus is carried by the merit of Earth supporting Wood; Blood nourishes mutually, wonder is endless. (Earth carries it, Blood nourishes it.) When Yin Qi attacks upward, Sichuan Pepper controls it downward; (The fetus fears upward reversal of Yin Qi; Sichuan Pepper has pure Yang nature; Yang takes Yin as home, thus descending Upper Jiao Heat.) Oyster shell subdues Dragon nature, obtaining true balance. (Oyster shell forms from water vapor, salty and cold; cold controls raging heat, salt guides the Dragon into the sea.) This ancient version had three ingredients at three fen each, omitting Oyster Shell. Xu Lingtai said: "Original text lacked dosage."
Modification Song: For pain, adding White Peony is best; For severe epigastric pain, rely on Chuanxiong; For vomiting, pain, anorexia, and irritability, add twenty Pinellia and one Asarum; Swallow with vinegar-water afterwards; If vomiting stops, cease medicine; If unresolved, taste boiled wheat juice; If thirsty later, prefer barley porridge; Once healed, continue taking it lightly, for the Great Reason of Yin and Yang in the pot.
Cheng Yunlai stated: Barley porridge regulates the Middle and tonifies the Spleen, hence do not stop taking it; this does not mean the above medicines can be taken constantly. This explanation is also profound. The formula's meaning is detailed in the song, so no further explanation is given.
**Xin Ding Suoyi Zai Wan (Newly Revised So-Carried Pill)** Treats unstable fetal Qi failing to grow, habitual abortion, or bleeding at three or five months without moving, ensuring lifelong inability to deliver full-term. Only this pill can treat it.
Ingredients: Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, one jin, peeled, steamed over rice for half an incense stick duration, avoid venting gas, dried and powdered), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, eight liang, baked and powdered), Sangjisheng (Taxillus Branch, six liang, authentic if self-collected, free of copper/iron, powdered), Yunfuling (Poria, six liang, raw and powdered), Chuduzhong (Eucommia Bark, eight liang, stir-fried to remove silk fibers, powdered).
Preparation and Administration: Use one jin of Jujubes split open, boil in running water to make a paste for pills the size of paulownia seeds. Dry to remove fire energy, store tightly sealed to prevent gas loss. Take three qian morning and evening with rice soup.
Note: Baizhu is the correct herb for tonifying Earth. Earth is the mother of all things and carries them, so this formula uses it as the Sovereign herb. Fuling grows sensing the Qi of pine trees, its shoots do not emerge from soil, uniquely possessing the fullness of Earth's Qi growing secretly; Sangjisheng grows sensing the essence of mulberry trees, its roots do not enter soil, naturally possessing sufficient Earth nature to flourish. One hides in the earth, like a child in the mother's womb; one resides on branches, like a fetus tied to the mother's uterus. These two substances seize the miraculous power of Heaven and Earth creation, thus nourishing Qi and Blood invisibly, achieving effects double that of other herbs. Duzhong tonifies先天 (Pre-heaven) Water and Fire, and its many fibers particularly maintain suspension without falling. Renshen possesses the position and nurturing of (Heaven, Earth, Human), and its abundant fluid particularly achieves success through nourishment. This year is Jiazi, the 414th cycle since the beginning. This formula was realized through extensive reading and clinical experience. Since Tang and Song dynasties, hundreds have written gynecological books, yet none mentioned this. Today, I specially supplement this discussion, bringing great joy.
**Shenyan Baosheng Wuyou San (Divine Efficacy Protect Life and Carefree Powder)** Women should take one or two doses before delivery for natural ease. In cases of transverse or breech presentation, or prolonged labor, taking one or two doses quickly yields results, saving the pregnant woman from dystocia disaster and ensuring maternal and infant safety.
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, wine-washed, one qian five fen), Chuanbeimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb, one qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike, eight fen each), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, ginger juice fried), Aiyè (Moxa Leaf), Tusizi (Cuscuta Seed, one qian four fen), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome, one qian three fen), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome, five fen), Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit, bran-fried, six fen), Gancao (Licorice Root, six fen), Baishao (White Peony Root, wine-washed, fried, one qian two fen, one qian in winter).
Preparation and Administration: Two zhong of water, three slices of ginger, decoct to eight fen. Take warm on an empty stomach.
Pumingzi said: This formula circulates widely, users agree it works, but few understand its formulation subtlety, leading to half doubt, half belief. I explain it: In newly pregnant women, fetal Qi is solid, abdominal skin tight, Qi and Blood wrap the fetus, making it hardest to move. This formula uses a "prop/support" method. Danggui, Chuanxiong, Baishao nourish and invigorate Blood; Houpu removes stasis, using it to prop open blood vessels so lochia does not block; Qianghuo, Jingjie unblock the Taiyang channel, providing support from behind; Taiyang channel is longest, governing Taiyang governs all channels; Zhiqiao disperses interior knotting Qi, providing support from front, preventing obstruction of fetal Qi and Blood; Aiyè props the Uterus, making the fetus agile; Chuanbeimu, Tusizi best transport the fetus for smooth delivery, propelling the whole fetal Qi, embodying natural vitality! Adding Huangqi props and supports Yuan Qi (Source Qi); strong Source Qi means strong movement ability; Shengjiang connects spirit, removes filth, disperses Cold, stops vomiting, thus supporting Righteous Qi and calming Stomach Qi; Gancao harmonizes all herbs, allowing left-right appropriateness, completing the divine prop method. This is truly a supreme good formula, yet modern people do not know how to use it, or if used, do not know its subtlety, remaining confused! I state this fully to awaken students.
**Huato Gusheng Dan (Huato's Nurturing Birth Pill)**
Ingredients: Zhusha (Cinnabar, five qian, finely ground, water levigated), Ming Ruxiang (Frankincense, one liang, roasted dry on bamboo leaf).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. On Dragon Boat Festival day, make pills with pig heart blood the size of euryale seed. Take one pill per dose. Send down with decoction of Danggui (three qian) and Chuanxiong (two qian) (prepared without female hands).
**Cuisheng Rushen Dan (Delivery Like Divine Pill)** Treats malpresentation and transverse birth, with great efficacy.
Ingredients: Baicaoshuang (Burnt Grass Ash), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root, avoid fire, powder, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Take three qian per dose. Mix with neonatal urine and rice vinegar into a paste, adjust with boiling water; or decoct with wine, add a little neonatal urine, take hot. Books say: "Blood stops when seeing black." This drug not only facilitates smooth birth but strongly consolidates Blood, avoiding the wonder of blood exhaustion.
**Jiawei Xionggui Tang (Modified Chuanxiong and Angelica Decoction)**
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, five qian), Zibei Guiban (Self-dead Turtle Plastron, calcined in neonatal urine until crisp), Chuanxiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome, three qian each), Furen Toufa (Woman's Hair, one handful, burned to ash retaining nature).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in water. Birth occurs after walking about five li. Even if dead fetus, it will pass. Calcined turtle plastron is also usable.
(Notes by Second Son Yuanxi): Use this for Yin deficiency with unclosed pubic symphysis; for Yang deficiency with unclosed pubic symphysis, use Danggui Buxue Tang plus Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Fuzi (Aconite Root), mixed with half hot neonatal urine; this is a pair of Yin and Yang. Why did Zhang Shiwan excessively criticize it?
**Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction)**
Ingredients: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, two qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root, one liang).
(Notes by Grandson Xindian): The fetus is like a boat, Blood is like water; when water rises, the boat floats; when Blood dries, the fetus stagnates, this is obvious. If amniotic fluid flows excessively without delivery, fearing that Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonification Decoction) or Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) acts too slowly, only this formula with Huangqi five times the amount of Danggui borrows Qi herbs to generate Blood. Qi moves rapidly, Blood follows, and the fetus descends smoothly with Blood. However, fearing inherent weakness, one must add Fuzi (Aconite Root) which moves without staying, to assist medicinal power. Do not doubt Fuzi's excessive pungent-hot nature and use sparingly. Gao Gugeng said: "For all dystocia syndromes, adding two to three qian of Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) to large Blood-tonifying doses is truly divine."
**Shixiao San (Laughing Off Powder)** Treats Uterine distension due to Blood stasis, and Erzhen Tong (Afterbirth Pain), with divine efficacy.
