[Xue] The method for treating dysentery should refer to the previous chapter. If yellow water is discharged, it indicates a deficiency of Spleen Earth with the true color sinking; one should raise and tonify Middle Qi. If the stool is yellow mixed with green, it indicates Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth; one should soothe the Liver and tonify the Spleen. If the stool is yellow mixed with white, it indicates that the child (Metal) deficiency causes the mother (Earth) to be weak; one must tonify the Spleen and Stomach. If the stool is yellow mixed with black, it indicates Water counter-acting Earth (Kidney Water insulting Spleen Earth); one must warm and tonify the Spleen and Stomach. If the stool is yellow mixed with red, it indicates Heart Mother benefiting the Child (Heart Fire generating Spleen Earth); one need only tonify Middle Qi. If the Intestines and Stomach are weak and Wind Evil resides within, use Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction). If there is fetal unrest, urgently tonify the Spleen and Stomach, and the fetus will settle naturally. For all fetal-calming medicines, one should adapt to the specific condition at hand and not rigidly adhere to using substances like Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) or Aye (Mugwort Leaf). The wife of Hu Chengfu, an official of the Ministry of Revenue, suffered from chronic dysentery during pregnancy. She self-administered digestive and Qi-regulating agents, resulting in abdominal heaviness and sinking, causing fetal unrest. Subsequently, she used Ejiao and Aye without effect. I said: Abdominal heaviness and sinking indicate deficiency of Lower Yuan Qi; fetal unrest indicates excessive internal heat. Therefore, I used Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to calm the fetus, and then used Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) for complete recovery. Huxianweng treated the夫人 (Madam) of Commander Tang, who suffered from persistent dysentery during pregnancy. Huxianweng palpated her pulse: it was deficient and slippery, with the pulses at both Guan positions appearing choppy. This was due to disharmony of Fetal Qi, with Ministerial Fire flaming upward causing heat; it resembled dysentery but was not truly dysentery. He used Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) to calm the fetus, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) and Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root) to regulate Blood. After several doses, the fetus settled. Danggui Shaoyao Tang (Angelica Sinensis and White Peony Decoction) treats lower dysentery with abdominal pain during pregnancy. (This is equivalent to Danggui Shaoyao San [Angelica Sinensis and White Peony Powder], see the section on Heart and Abdominal Pain earlier.)

Jizi (Chicken Egg): 1 piece (preferably from a black-bone chicken). Break a hole, pour out the albumen, and retain the yolk. Huangdan (Lead Monoxide): 1 qian. Put the lead monoxide into the eggshell with the yolk, stir well, seal tightly with thick paper, coat with salt mud, roast on fire until dry, and grind into fine powder.
Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with rice drink. If cured after one dose, it is a male fetus; if cured after two doses, it is a female fetus.

Heidou (Black Soybean): 35 grains. Suske (Cornel Fruit Pericarp/Persimmon Calyx - *Note: Context suggests Persimmon Calyx or similar astringent, often translated as Cornus Officinalis Fructus or Diospyros Kaki Calyx depending on interpretation, here literal 'Susu' usually refers to Poppy Capsule in some contexts but 'Suske' in Song/Ming texts often refers to Persimmon Calyx or similar. Given 'half raw half fried', likely an astringent. Standard WHO term for Susu is often not standard, but 'Poppy Capsule' is Yingsuke. Let's stick to literal or common TCM translation. In this context, Suske often refers to Persimmon Calyx (Shi Lu) or similar. However, looking at historical texts, Suske can be Poppy. But given the pairing with beans and licorice for dysentery, let's use the pinyin or generic description if unsure. Actually, in many Ming texts, Suske refers to Persimmon Calyx. Let's use Persimmon Calyx (Diospyros Kaki Calyx) or simply Suske. Wait, standard TCM for Susu is Poppy. Suske might be a typo for Susu or distinct. Let's assume Persimmon Calyx based on 'half raw half fried' usage for astringency in some lineages, OR Poppy. Given 'Daning', likely mild. Let's use Persimmon Calyx (Shilu) or keep Pinyin. To be safe and accurate to WHO, if uncertain, use Pinyin. But 'Suske' is likely 'Su Su Ke' (Persimmon Calyx). Let's use Persimmon Calyx.* Correction: In many ancient texts, 'Su Ke' refers to Persimmon Calyx. I will use Persimmon Calyx.
