[Da] In cases of dysentery (Zhixia) that have persisted for a long time or are approaching recovery, symptoms of coughing with qi reversal and vomiting with qi reversal often occur. However, "coughing with qi reversal" is what the ancients referred to as "Yue" (hiccups). Yue arises from kidney cold; this syndrome is extremely critical, and other diseases also contraindicate such symptoms. If this syndrome is observed, it is appropriate to use Jupi Ganjiang Tang (Tangerine Peel and Dried Ginger Decoction), Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction), or Dingxiang Shidi Tang (Clove and Persimmon Calyx Decoction). For coughing with qi reversal caused by yang syndromes, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) or Jupi Zhuru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction) should be used. I once treated a patient with persistent hiccups following dysentery; the six pulses were deep and weak, and treatments by other physicians involving herbs and moxibustion were ineffective. I administered Tuiyin San (Yin-Removing Powder), and the condition was cured after two doses. I also once treated Secretary Xu, who suffered from persistent hiccups after recovering from dysentery; various medications had failed. I then applied moxibustion to Qimen (LR14), and he recovered in less than three moxa cones. (See *Zhenjiu Zhunsheng* for acupoint details.) Regarding vomiting with qi reversal, the *Nan Jing* states: "Without yin, there is vomiting." However, vomiting is mostly due to stomach heat, but can also arise from stomach cold or summerheat toxicity. If vomiting is caused by stomach heat, it is appropriate to administer Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction), Sunzhao Zhuru Tang (Sun Zhao's Bamboo Shavings Decoction), Lugen Tang (Reed Rhizome Decoction), Guanju Jiegeng Tang (Official Bureau Platycodon Decoction), or Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) added with fresh ginger. If vomiting is accompanied by thirst, Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction) should be used. I once treated a patient with persistent vomiting after dysentery; the six pulses were weak and deficient, indicating stomach cold causing vomiting, seemingly compounded by summerheat toxicity congealing in the epigastrium. Administration of Xiangru Wan (Elsholtzia Pill) from the *Ju Fang* resulted in recovery.
Jupi Ganjiang Tang (Tangerine Peel and Dried Ginger Decoction): Treats Yue (hiccups).
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Tongcao (Akebiae Caulis), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens dried), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 4 qian); Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) (2 qian).
Crush the ingredients. Take 4 qian per dose, add one cup of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 cups, remove dregs, and take warm.
Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction): Treats severe Yue (hiccups/vomiting).
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (1 liang 1 fen, washed); Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (2 liang, sliced).
Add two cups of water, decoct until reduced to 0.8 cups, remove dregs, and divide into two doses.
Dingxiang Shidi Tang (Clove and Persimmon Calyx Decoction): Treats coughing with qi reversal (hiccups).
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (10 grains); Shidi (Calyc Persimmoni) (15 pieces).
Crush the ingredients, add one and a half cups of water, decoct until reduced to 0.8 cups, remove dregs, and take hot.
Jupi Zhuru Tang (Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction): Treats Yue ni (hiccups/reversal).
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2 liang); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) (1 liang, washed with boiling water); Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) (0.5 liang); Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) (1 sheng).
Crush the ingredients. Take 4 qian per dose, add two cups of water, 6 slices of fresh ginger, and one jujube. Decoct until reduced to 0.7 cups, remove dregs, and take warm.
Shengjiang Jupi Tang (Fresh Ginger and Tangerine Peel Decoction): Treats dry heaving and Yue, especially when accompanied by cold extremities.
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (4 liang); Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (0.5 jin).
Crush the ingredients. Take 0.5 liang per dose, add one cup of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 cups, remove dregs, and take warm.
Tuiyin San (Yin-Removing Powder): Originally treats Yin-Du Shanghan (Yin-Toxic Cold Damage), characterized by cold extremities, deep and fine pulses, headache, and heavy sensation in the lower back. Take three consecutive doses for these symptoms. For minor cold injuries, take a dose equivalent to "one zi" (approx. 1-2 grams), mixed with Zhengyuan San (Upright Origin Powder) and decocted together, adding a little salt. For hiccups caused by Yin-Du Shanghan, decoct one dose and sip slowly while hot to stop the hiccups.
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens dried), Chuan Wutou (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata) (equal parts).
Grind into a coarse powder, stir-fry until yellow, cool, and grind into a fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add one cup of water and a pinch of salt, decoct until reduced to half a cup, and take.
Zhuling Tang (Polyporus Decoction): Treats coughing with vomiting and thirst, restlessness, and insomnia.
Zhuling (Polypori Sclerotium), Chi Fuling (Poria cum Risus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini fried), Huashi (Talcum) (each 0.5 liang).
Crush the ingredients. Take 3 qian per dose, add one cup of water, decoct until the Ejiao is completely dissolved, and take.
Buyi Canglin Tang (Supplement to Canglin Tang): Treats dysentery with restlessness, warm extremities, and headache. If the spleen and stomach pulses are not weak, this indicates toxic vapors rushing upward to the heart and lungs, causing vomiting, hiccups, and inability to eat. Canglin Tang is appropriate. (This is Baidu San/Decoction for Overcoming Toxins).
Take 4 qian per dose, add 100 grains of aged rice (Chen Cang Mi), 5 slices of ginger, and one jujube. Decoct and take warm. If the pulse is weak and minute, or if there is empty distension in the heart and abdomen, and cold extremities, and initially no vomiting occurred because excessive astringent herbs like Poppy Seed (Yingsu) and Chinese Plum (Wumei) were taken, leading to vomiting upon smelling food, this indicates spleen and stomach deficiency. Use only Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), cut into small bean-sized pieces. Use half raw and half stir-fried in a silver pot until cooked. Grind into powder and take with rice gruel.
Also treats Jin Kou Li (Locked-Mouth Dysentery). Use Shi Lian Zi (Nelumbinis Semen) with shell removed, keeping the plumule and flesh, grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with aged rice gruel. This disease is generally caused by toxic qi rushing upward to the heart and lungs; this remedy helps unblock heart qi, restoring appetite.
