Crush the herbs, take half a liang per dose, decoct with ginger and jujube, and administer before meals. After taking five to six doses, chills, fever, and abdominal pain will subside. If metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) and leukorrhea (vaginal discharge) persist, continue administering the subsequent Shu Fu Wan (Prepared Aconite Pill).
Shu Fu Wan (Prepared Aconite Pill)
Ingredients: Prepared Aconite Root (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Equisetum Hiemale Stem (Herba Equiseti Hiemalis - removed nodes), Dragon Bone (Os Draconis), Red Kaolin (Lapis Kaolinitis Rubra, each half a liang), Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, each one liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with vinegar paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50-60 pills per dose, administered before meals with rice water.
Case Example: A woman over fifty years old, who had been amenorrheic for seven years, suddenly resumed menstruation, leading to metrorrhagia accompanied by fever and abdominal pain, which persisted for two months without improvement. Upon examination, her pulse was deficient, thin, rapid, and frequent. I stated, "This is caused by Yin deficiency; this medication is appropriate."
Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill)
Indications: Menorrhagia (excessive menstrual flow) with dark,瘀 black blood, severe cases presenting as metrorrhagia, shortness of breath, extreme cold in the umbilical and abdominal regions causing profuse sweating like rain, and a faint, minute pulse at the cun position of the chi pulse. This condition arises from deficiency and decline of the Chong and Ren meridians, where wind-cold pathogens invade the uterus, failing to secure the Qi. Moxibustion can be applied to Guanyuan (CV4) for 100 moxa cones; this acupoint is located three cun directly below the center of the umbilicus.
Ingredients: Deer Antler (hair burned off, fried with suet), Red Kaolin (processed), Halloysitum (processed, each one liang), Mugwort Leaf (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, omitted in some formulas), Cinnabar Tree Leaf (Folium Ilicis Cornutae), Prepared Aconite Root (each half a liang), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Angelica Sinensis Radix, Dipsacus Asperoides Root (Radix Cynanchi Atrati, each two liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, mix with wine paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose, administered with warm wine on an empty stomach. Another method uses refined honey for pill formation.
Chilong Dan (Red Dragon Pill)
Indications: Metrorrhagia with continuous bleeding.
Ingredients: Halloysitum (stir-fried), Cuttlefish Bone (Halo Sepiae), Deer Antler, Dragon Bone, Swallow Stone (Os Hirundinis), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Colla Corii Asini), Angelica Sinensis Radix, Dried Ginger (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secatum, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, mix with wine and vinegar paste to form pills. Take 50 pills per dose, administered with warm wine.
Zijin San (Purple Gold Powder)
Indications: Menorrhagia, metrorrhagia with leukorrhea, continuous dripping, heaviness and pain in the waist and abdomen, and all types of leukorrhea with five colors.
Ingredients: Halloysitum (calcined red, quenched in vinegar seven times, finely ground and floated in water, dried, weighed at three liang), White Peony Root (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome, Prepared Rehmannia Root, Prepared Aconite Root, Angelica Sinensis Radix (each one liang), Dried Ginger (stir-fried), Cinnamon Bark (Cortex Cinnamomi, each half a liang), Red Kaolin, Dragon Bone (each processed separately and finely ground, each one liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take two qian per dose, add a small amount of Moschus, and mix with rice water on an empty stomach.
Baizhi Nuangong Wan (Angelica Dahurica Uterus-Warming Pill)
Actions: Warms the Blood Sea, fills the Chong and Ren meridians. Indications: Uterine weakness, stagnation of wind-cold, infertility or repeated miscarriages; leukorrhea with red and white discharge, leakage of five-colored secretions, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest and abdominal fullness and pain, palpitations, spontaneous sweating, and Qi and Blood deficiency due to excessive blood loss.
Ingredients: Halloysitum (processed, one liang), Dried Ginger (stir-fried), Peony Root, Angelica Dahurica Radix (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Sichuan Pepper Pericarpium (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli, processed), Donkey-hide Gelatin (fried with powder), Mugwort Leaf (processed), Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome (each seven qian and half).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 40 pills per dose, administered with rice water, warm wine, or vinegar soup as preferred.
Zhenling Dan (Thunder Spirit Pill) from *Heji Jufang*
Indications: Metrorrhagia with continuous bleeding, or deficient and thin pulse, cold hands and feet. Administer with Xiong Gui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction) added with Aucklandia Root (Radix Aucklandiae), or with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Cyperi Rhizoma (Rhizoma Cyperi) decoction, three pills at a time. Lingsha Dan (Spirit Sand Pill) is also acceptable. It also treats sudden fright-induced wind and bleeding from the nine orifices. Can be administered with Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction). (See Miscellaneous Diseases: Diarrhea section for formula.)
Another Prescription for Metrorrhagia
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) two liang ground into fine powder, decocted in three sheng of wine until one sheng remains, taken in one dose on an empty stomach. *Bixiao Fang* uses 100 Dingxiang, decocted in wine.
Another Prescription
Yizhi Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) stir-fried, ground into powder, mixed with salted rice water.
Nuangong Wan (Uterus-Warming Pill), Neibu Danggui Wan (Internal Supplementing Angelica Pill), Shugan Dihuang Wan (Prepared Rehmannia Pill), Ji Yin Dan (Nourishing Yin Pill), Yuyuliang Wan (Halloysite Pill), Neijiu San (Internal Moxibustion Powder), Zhouxue Wan (Blood-Constricting Pill), Zi Shiyang Wan (Purple Quartz Pill)
All the above formulas treat metrorrhagia and leukorrhea; see the General Treatment Section and Regulation of Menstruation Section for details.
[Xue Ji] The wife of my cousin's son-in-law, Fang Jianfu, aged fifty, suffered from metrorrhagia in the Xin Chou year, unresponsive to various medicines. In the eighth month of the Ren Yin year, she experienced body heat and pain, dizziness, runny nose, expectoration, and poor appetite. Others treated it as a Fire syndrome, leading to worsening fever and several days of fasting. Upon examination, I said, "The Spleen and Stomach have been deficient for a long time; excessive use of cold medicines has not resolved the original illness but has induced a new Cold syndrome." I prescribed Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) material once. By the next morning, she requested a few spoons of porridge; after a second dose, her intake doubled, fever subsided, and pain stopped. She eventually recovered by taking Bawei Wan. In the autumn of the Gui Mao year, due to labor and emotional anger, the disease recurred in the summer of the Jia Chen year. She experienced chest fullness and fever, back and lower back pain, depressed spirit, and conflicting diagnoses of internal injury or summerheat. She presented with metrorrhagia, hematochezia, irritability, thirst, inability to eat, intermittent coma, and a surging pulse that was weak upon pressure. This is rootless Fire, internal deficiency Cold with external false Heat. I used Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Great Tonifying Decoction) plus Prepared Aconite Root for one dose. She then ate three or four spoons of porridge, and bleeding gradually decreased. Daily administration of Bawei Wan led to complete recovery.
The wife of Wang Tiancheng, Da Yin, suffered from chronic metrorrhagia, self-medicating with Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) and other cooling-blood agents, with fluctuating results. Anger triggered fever and continuous bleeding. Previous medications failed. The physician advocated clearing Fire, which exacerbated abdominal and hypochondriac pain and caused cold hands and feet. I stated, "This is caused by Spleen-Stomach deficiency Cold." I first used Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Middle-Warming Decoction), resolving heat and pain. Then, using Jisheng Guipi Tang (Jisheng Spleen-Supplementing Decoction) and Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Qi-Supplementing Decoction), the bleeding ceased immediately. Adhering rigidly to the notion that "pain admits no tonification" would have been a mistake.
The wife of Yang Yongxing, Jin Yi, suffered from the aforementioned condition but took excessive cooling agents, worsening symptoms with abdominal distension, inability to eat, fever, irritability, and a surging yet empty pulse. I stated, "This is agitation caused by Qi and Blood deficiency in the Spleen Meridian." Urgent treatment with Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) plus Stir-fried Ginger was required to warm and tonify; delay would be fatal. Disbelieving me, she took hemostatic and Fire-clearing agents, leading to a surge of deficiency syndromes. Only then did she believe my advice, but it was too late to treat.
[Astringent Agents]
[Da Lun] Treats metrorrhagia with continuous bleeding and lower abdominal pain.
Ingredients: Baishao (White Peony Root, one liang, stir-fried yellow), Baiye (Cinnabar Tree Leaf, six liang, slightly stir-fried. Danxi noted: Baiye is dry in nature).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in one sheng of water until six he remain, add five he of wine, and decoct until seven he remain. Divide into two doses, taken on an empty stomach. Another method: grind into fine powder, mix with wine, two qian per dose. Another formula includes Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) in equal parts, mixed with wine to treat leukorrhea and umbilical/abdominal pain.
[Shi Yi] Mumli San (Oyster Shell Powder)
Indications: Menstruation continuing indefinitely, unresponsive to other medicines.
Preparation: Calcine Mumli (Oyster Shell), grind finely, mix with vinegar to form pills, calcine again until red-hot, cool, grind finely to remove fire toxicity. Mix with mugwort powder prepared with vinegar, boil into a paste, and form pills the size of tung seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, administered with vinegar-mugwort soup.
[Drying Agents]

Preparation and Administration: Crush, decoct in two sheng of water until eight he remain, divide into two doses.
Another Prescription for Metrorrhagia

Ingredients: Chuanxiong (one liang and two qian), Ejiao, Qing Zhuru (Green Bamboo Sap, each eight fen), Xuduan (Dipsacus Root), Diyü (Sanguisorba Root), Xiaoji Gen (Small Thistle Root, each three fen), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix, six fen), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root, Fulonggan, each eleven fen).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in nine zhan of water until three zhan remain, strain, and divide into three doses.
[Yanyi] Treats uterine bleeding in women. Can sha (Silkworm excrement) one liang stir-fried, Fulonggan half a liang, Ejiao one liang, ground together into powder. Mix with warm wine, take two to three qian on an empty stomach, until effective. (*Daqian* names this Bibi San, without Ejiao.)
[Luo Qianfu] Fulonggan San (Dragon's House Earth Powder)
Indications: Qi and Blood exhaustion, deficiency of Chong and Ren meridians. Classics state: Sudden non-menstrual bleeding, resembling bean curd juice, or forming blood clots, or mixing five colors, or red and white combined, cold pain in umbilical/abdominal regions, persistent for a long time, causing sallow emaciation, dry mouth, reduced appetite, limb weakness, empty irritability, and palpitations.
Ingredients: Fulonggan (one liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, half a liang), Chishizhi (Red Kaolin, one liang), Chuanxiong (three liang), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark, half a liang), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Aiye (Mugwort Leaf, slightly stir-fried, each two liang), Danggui, Jiangjiang (Dried Ginger, each seven qian and half), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, one liang and half).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely grind. Take four qian per dose, add one jujube, decoct with water.
Diyu San (Sanguisorba Powder)
Indications: Metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women.
Ingredients: Diyü (crushed), Puhuang, Baishao, Baifuling (Poria), Baiye (slightly stir-fried), Xiezhao (Crab Claws, slightly stir-fried), Shudihuang, Lu jiao jiao (Deer Antler Glue, crushed and fried until yellow and dry), Loulu (Euphorbia Root, each one liang), Chuanxiong, Danggui (crushed and stir-fried, each seven qian and half), Fulonggan (one liang and half), Jiangjiang (stir-fried), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (crushed, roasted red, each half a liang).
Preparation and Administration: Crush. Take three qian per dose, add one fen of Zhuru (Bamboo Sap), decoct in one zhong of water until seven fen remain, strain, and take warm before meals.
Regarding the above five formulas, Fulonggan is used because dryness removes dampness. The first two formulas clear damp-heat, while the latter two clear cold-damp. Fulonggan is considered a holy medicine for stopping bleeding. Ancients treated metrorrhagia by using Xuanjinhua (Inula Flower) and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) to resolve phlegm-damp in the diaphragm, achieving hemostasis; this follows the same principle.
