In the past, there was a Mr. Jiao in Dongjing (Tokyo/Kaifeng). Because his family had no legitimate heir for three generations, he traveled for business and pleasure, visiting famous mountains, seeking high sages, asking about the causes and effects. He came to the capital to see an old monk, whose voice was clear and distant, eyes shining with spirit. After asking questions and discussing, finding the words very unusual, he sat down in the meditation hall. The monk said, "What do you wish?" Jiao said, "My poor family has had no legitimate heir for three generations, what should I do?" The monk said, "There are three reasons for having no heir: First, ancestors lacked virtue, and one's own conduct was improper; Second, the husband and wife's birth dates may violate taboos; Third, the spirit is not guarded, and the wife's natal family has cold blood." Jiao said, "Improper conduct and violating birth date taboos can be accepted and corrected; if the wife's natal family has cold blood, what magic method is there?" He bowed again and said, "I wish to hear one word." The monk said, "It is not difficult. First cultivate virtue, then cultivate the body. After three years, you can go to Wutai Mountain, where I will teach you a strange prescription." Saying this, he suddenly disappeared. Since meeting the old monk, Jiao constantly performed acts of kindness and hidden merits. When people faced danger, he imitated Guanyin's rescue; seeing animals about to die, he assisted Heaven's love for life, spreading grace and virtue, for three years. Finally, he went to Wutai Mountain to find the old monk. After several days without seeing him, he returned home. Suddenly, he saw a novice holding a book, saying, "The master sends word to the doctor: Upon returning home with completed merit and virtue, prepare the medicine and take it sincerely, and noble children will be born as you wish."
Jiao said, "I only need a legitimate son, why hope for a noble one!" Thus, Jiao Yuanwai (Master Jiao) was born. Later, Yuanwai's adopted son was unworthy. He sighed, "What lack of virtue led to this?" Suddenly, a Daoist priest appeared and said, "You look worried, why not go to Wutai Mountain to see the old monk?" Jiao reflected and went to Wutai Mountain to ask about the cause and effect. Arriving at Wutai Mountain, he did not see the old monk, only the novice, who said, "The master said yesterday that Yuanwai would arrive today and asked me to receive you. Repeatedly sending word, why ask? Just follow your father's conduct, and the foolish will naturally become virtuous, and later you will surely bear virtuous descendants." Jiao said, "Can a foolish son become virtuous?" The novice said, "In the past, the five sons of the Dou family were all physically incomplete. Later, they spread grace and virtue, and all recovered. Accumulating virtue brings retribution, and all passed the imperial examinations." Jiao bowed and thanked him, returning home. He ordered woodblock printing and distributed the medical text. Within twenty years, several noble and wealthy descendants were born. The eldest son, Hengjin, entered the golden gates (official circles). Later generations collected his biography and the prescription practice. Those who used this prescription to seek offspring obtained descendants with virtue. I personally received this prescription and dare not remain silent. I record this chapter and discussion to inform the worthy, hoping it will not be lost. The prescription follows.
