Chao Yuanfang stated: The Spleen meridian connects to the stomach, runs alongside the pharynx, attaches to the root of the tongue, and spreads under the tongue; the divergent branch of the Heart meridian attaches to the root of the tongue. Now, when the Heart and Spleen organs are affected by Wind pathogen, the tongue becomes stiff and speech is impaired. The throat is where Qi ascends and descends; the epiglottis is the gate of voice; the tongue is the mechanism of sound; the lips are the fan of voice. When Cold and Wind pathogens lodge between the epiglottis, sudden loss of voice occurs. All these are caused by injury from Wind pathogen, hence termed wind-stroke and aphonia. The Classics state: Sleeping in the wind while drunk causes aphonia.
