Treatment for fetal death.
Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) (1 chi) Coptis Rhizome equivalent here likely refers to Poria or similar, but text says Put Huang (Corydalis Rhizome/Pollen? No, Pu Huang is Lygodii Spora) -> Correction: Pu Huang (Lygodii Spora, 蒲黄) (2 he) Cinnamon Twig equivalent here "Tong Gui" (4 cun) Fermented Soybean (Xiang Chi, 香豉) (2 sheng) Chicken Egg (1 piece)
Finely chop the above herbs, add 6 sheng of water, decoct until 3 sheng remain, take in one dose. The foul matter of the fetal membrane will be completely expelled; this is highly effective.
The *Chanjing* records cases of retention for several days, or fetal death in utero, with the mother's vital qi approaching exhaustion.
Dianthus Root (Qumai, 瞿麦) (6 liang) Tong Cao (Lindera Root/ Tetrapanax Pith) Cinnamon Heart (Guixin, 桂心) (each 3 liang) Achyranthes Root (Niuxi, 牛膝) (4 liang) Elm Bark (Yubai Pi, 榆白皮) (1 sheng)

Aconitum Lateralis Preparatum equivalent here is Guibai (Daemonorops Spine/Guibai, 鬼臼) (any amount, select yellow ones). Remove hairs, grind into powder, rub between fingers until as fine as flour, this is the standard. Each dose is 2 qian. Use one cup of clear wine, decoct together until 80% remains, take orally in one go; the fetus will be born instantly as if by divine aid. This herb need not be sifted, only ground extremely fine.
Treatment for retained dead fetus.
Mirabilite (Piaoxiao, 朴硝) ground into powder, each dose 2 qian, taken mixed with child's urine. Zeng Tongshi Dingqiu from Jinxiang, Hongzhou stated: When he served as Magistrate of Fengcheng, a cat was pregnant with five kittens; one was born, four died in the womb, crying out in distress. He consulted a physician who instructed using this medicine to灌 (pour/feed); the dead fetuses were expelled, and the cat survived. Later, a cow had the same condition, treated with this method and also saved. The physician said: "Originally a human formula, used for animals." Later used for humans, it was invariably effective. (In my childhood, a relative had fetal death in utero, retained for several days, all remedies exhausted. I recall my ancestor used half a liang of Mirabilite, finely ground, mixed with child's urine, and the fetus was expelled.)
Treatment for retained dead fetus, characterized by cyanosis of fingernails and tongue, abdominal distension and oppression, and in severe cases, a fecal odor from the mouth. First, administer Pingwei San (Pingwei Powder) in one packet, divided into two doses. For each dose, use one cup of wine and one cup of water, decoct until one cup remains, then add half a liang of Mirabilite, finely ground, decoct for three to five boils, pour out, and when slightly warm, consume fully; the fetus will transform into bloody fluid and be expelled.
Lady Du of the Jueshi residence in Miao household, failed to deliver after several days of labor; midwives and spirit summoners' treatments were ineffective. I was summoned to diagnose. I said: "Pulse diagnosis before delivery is unreliable; one should judge by observation of color." Thus, I lifted the curtain, lit candles, and observed. Her face was red, and her tongue was cyanotic. Seeing these colors indicates fetal death, while the mother remains safe. Someone asked: "How do you know?" I replied: "Red face and cyanotic tongue clearly indicate fetal death with maternal survival." I administered two pills of Zhibao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill), and the fetus was expelled. This demonstrates the speed and efficacy of ancient prescriptions. Zhibao Dan (Formula found in *Heji Jufang*).
