Tingli (Stellariae Semen, fried and ground separately), Xuisui Zi (Euphorbiae Lathyridis Semen, shelled, each half tael, ground), Gansun Mo (Dried Bamboo Shoot Powder, one tael).
The above are ground into powder, mixed with jujube flesh to make pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take seven pills per dose, administered with decoction of Bianzhu (Bamboo Leaf). If bowel movements are unobstructed, reduce Xuisui Zi and Tingli by one fen each, and add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) half a tael.
There are also Changtan (Intestinal Polyp/Tumor), Luzhang (Abdominal Distension), Piqi (Spleen Qi disorder), Xueqi (Blood Qi disorder), Xuegu (Blood Gu/Poison), Shuigu (Water Gu/Poison), Shigu (Stone Gu/Poison), and Xueying (Blood Goiter) (these several syndromes are also similar to swelling), all seen in the Supplementary Section later. When meridians and collaterals are not regulated, various diseases arise; therefore, they are listed in sequence here.
Heaven and Earth begin with the union of husband and wife, Qian and Kun combine through Yin and Yang. Although clear and turbid, still and moving differ, their imaging and emulation have similarities. Investigating why women's diseases differ from men's, there are several reasons. Ancient formulas state that women's diseases are ten times harder to treat than men's; is this not said profoundly? However, among the Thirty-Six Diseases, the postpartum category is unique to women. The rest—external contraction of Wind, Summerheat, Cold, Dampness; internal accumulation of Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, dietary irregularities, sexual fatigue; and deficiency-excess, cold-heat patterns—are identical to those in men. By treating according to the root cause, this can be understood.
Ancient texts establish separate formulas and discussions for women because of the differences in pregnancy, childbirth, metrorrhagia, and trauma. Moreover, women's diseases are ten times harder to treat than men's. Generally, women have more desires than men and contract diseases twice as often. Additionally, due to affection, love-hate, jealousy, worry, and indignation, their emotional attachments are firm and difficult to suppress, leading to deep-rooted pathology that is hard to cure. Furthermore, when pregnant or gestating while suffering from illness, one must not only avoid toxic drugs but also carefully assess deficiency-excess and cold-heat patterns for regulation, avoiding reckless administration of decoctions that could lead to premature death.
If a woman manages her health according to proper principles, Blood and Qi will harmonize, and Wind, Cold, Summerheat, and Dampness cannot cause harm. If labor and injury damage Blood and Qi, Wind-Cold will invade via deficiency. It may manifest in meridians and collaterals or travel into the abdomen. Internally affected by Wind pathogen, with Spleen-Stomach weakness, digestion fails. Food fails to nourish, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) become stagnant, skin turns yellow and dry, and the face lacks luster. If Large Intestine Qi is deficient, it transforms into diarrhea. If it flows into Guanyuan (CV-4), it may cause infertility. Depending on the site of injury, different diseases arise. Medical classics state: All thirty-six types of women's diseases originate from cold-heat imbalances in the Zang (Uterus), damage from overwork, accompanied by leukorrhea, starting within the Bao (Uterus). Therefore, the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) are the seas of the Twelve Meridians. Women's diseases are all observed through the Hand-Shaoyin (Heart) and Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) meridians for diagnosis.
