For any woman whose fetus moves during pregnancy, regardless of gestational age, who frequently miscarries; or who has a fetus but experiences menstrual bleeding, albeit light, regularly without harming the fetus. "Chanbao Fang" states: Frequent fetal movement and insecurity during pregnancy are due to deficiency of the Chong and Ren meridians, and the Bao Men and Zi Hu (uterine opening) failing to secure the conception. It may also be caused by excessive drinking or sexual activity, causing damage and insecurity. Chao Yuanfang states: When the Chong and Ren meridians harbor wind-cold while pregnant, fetal movement occurs due to accidental physical impact, regardless of gestational age. It may also result from irregular emotions, stagnant qi, damaging Heart and Liver, disturbing blood vessels, leading to Chong-Ren deficiency and instability of the Bao Men; or from climbing heights, using the toilet, where wind attacks the Yin aperture and enters the uterus, all causing fetal movement and insecurity. Once, someone asked obstetricians why some pregnant women have continuous menstruation without fetal harm, if ancient methods apply. The answer was: Women with abundant blood and deficient qi tend to be obese. After pregnancy, if menstruation continues but the fetus remains stable, modern views might diagnose it as Lou Tai (threatened abortion/bleeding during pregnancy). Treating it as Lou Tai would likely cause miscarriage; not treating it as such might preserve the fetus. Examining ancient wisdom reveals profound meaning. Chao Yuanfang says: Amenorrhea without other discomfort indicates pregnancy. Menstrual blood accumulates to nourish the fetus and transforms into milk. Once pregnant, blood accumulates for the fetus, so it shouldn't flow freely. However, continued menstruation during pregnancy isn't necessarily due to excess blood. If one claims Wind in the Ying Meridian causes blood to move, this is plausible. Since Wind dominates the Ying Meridian, the flowing blood is not that which nourishes the fetus. Differentiating thus, treating it as Lou Tai requires tonic herbs for securing the fetus. If the fetus is intact but forced with tonics, it constitutes "Shi Shi Xu Xu" (reinforcing excess and depleting deficiency). Miscarriage would then be expected. If doctors understand the Wind in Ying Meridian theory, treating only the Wind can stop menstruation. Or even without medication, the fetus remains safe. However, if the fetus is inherently unstable, and leakage precedes miscarriage due to immoderate sex, it must be treated as Lou Tai, requiring careful examination. Also, young women trusting physicians' advice to take warming/tonic herbs to conceive may manipulate the Bao Men and Zi Hu. (Both "Chaoshi Bingyuan" and "Chanbao Fang" call this Bao Men Zi Hu; Zhang Zhongjing calls it Xue Shi/Blood Chamber.) This prevents new blood generation and old blood discharge. If pregnancy occurs, miscarriage is inevitable. After middle age, qi declines, leading to Beng Zhong (metrorrhagia/menorrhagia) and Dai Xia (leukorrhea). Menstrual delays, yellow emaciation, stiff back, five-palm heat, and Five Labors and Seven Injuries arise, not just from wind-cold in the Bao Men/Zi Hu. Thus, "Qianjin Yifang" has Poxiao Dangbao Tang for this condition. Modern doctors rarely use or know it. Regarding fetal movement, there are two causes. One: maternal illness causes fetal movement; treat the mother's illness, and the fetus settles. Two: If the fetus is unstable and moves spontaneously, treat the mother's illness by calming the fetus, and the mother heals herself. Another cause: fatigue, exposure to cold/heat, improper diet, or living conditions. Mild cases cause restlessness; severe cases lead to injury or miscarriage. Observe the mother's complexion: Red face, blue tongue indicates dead fetus, living mother; Blue lips/mouth, foam at corners indicates death of both mother and fetus; Blue face, red tongue, foam in mouth indicates dead mother, living fetus.
