(Afterword: Formulas for Abortion in Pregnancy)
If a pregnant woman is emaciated or suffers from concurrent diseases, resulting in deficiency and damage of the Zang-Fu organs, and exhaustion of Qi and Blood, such that she cannot nourish the fetus, leading to fetal restlessness and instability which ultimately cannot be stabilized, abortion may be induced to prevent harm to the mother.
For treating fetal restlessness that cannot be stabilized, with the fetus still in the uterus and the mother's life in danger, Niuxi Tang (Cyathulae Radix Decoction) must be used to expel the fetus.
Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (remove sprouts, cut into pieces, 0.5 liang) Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum, 2 liang) Zhusha (Cinnabaris, 2.5 liang, ground)
Take five large bowls of water, boil Niuxi until half remains; remove the dregs, then mix Honey (Mell, 1 liang) with Zhusha and Shuiyin, grinding them into a paste. For each dose, take one small bowl of Niuxi decoction to mix with half a spoonful of the paste, and take it all at once.
To treat cases where maternal illness causes fetal instability, allowing for abortion, Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder) is indicated.
Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) Qumai (Dianthi Herba) (each 2 liang) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (1 liang)
Cut the herbs into small pieces. For each dose, use 4 qian. Add one bowl of water, decoct until 7 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take on an empty stomach.
Another formula: Qumai (Dianthi Herba) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) (each 1 liang) Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (2 liang) Xiezhao (Xenopus Oviductus, Crab Claws) (2 he)
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 1 qian mixed with warm wine on an empty stomach.
Yet another formula: Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (one handful)
Finely crush the Niuxi. Decoct in one large bowl of unadulterated wine until 7 fen remains, and take in two divided warm doses.
Yet another formula: Take 4 liang of Faqu (Medicated Leaven) prepared on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Add two large bowls of water, decoct until one large bowl plus three fen remains. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Divide into three warm doses; the fetus will be expelled promptly.

Mai (Triticum aestivum L., Wheat grain) (1 sheng)
Grind into powder, mix with water and boil to obtain 2 sheng. Ingestion leads to expulsion; this is highly effective.

Take one chicken egg (Gallus gallus domesticum Ovum). Place salt (Sal) amounting to three finger-pinches into the egg. Ingest it, and the fetus will be expelled immediately. This is identical to Ruan Henan’s method for treating difficult labor. It is also recorded in *Qianjin Fang* and *Jingxin Lu*.
After spontaneous abortion, if the meridians are further damaged, their deficiency leads to continuous vaginal bleeding. Excessive bleeding may cause irritability and distress, potentially leading to death.
For treating pregnancy complications involving fetal disturbance and continuous vaginal bleeding accompanied by abdominal pain, this formula is suitable.
Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, Donkey-hide Gelatin) (1 liang, stir-fried) Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium, Mugwort Leaf) (0.5 liang)
Decoct the above in one large bowl of water until 6 fen remains. Filter out the dregs and take warm on an empty stomach.
For treating pregnancy complications involving fetal disturbance and continuous vaginal bleeding.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Licorice Root) (1 liang, honey-fried) Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, Donkey-hide Gelatin) (2 liang, stir-fried) Jizi (Gallus gallus domesticum Ovum, Chicken Egg) (one)
Finely chop the herbs. Decoct Gancao in two large bowls of water until one large bowl plus three fen remains. Filter out the dregs. Add Jizi and Ejiao. Wait for the Ejiao to dissolve, stirring until uniform. Take in three divided warm doses as needed.
