Discussion states: The cause of urinary retention during pregnancy lies in heat in the Small Intestine. Heat enters the bladder (Pao). When internal heat accumulation is severe, it causes urinary retention. If urine cannot be discharged, Qi stagnation in the heart, hypochondrium, and lower abdomen leads to shortness of breath and urgency. Chen Wuyue said: In pregnancy, when the full fetus presses against the bladder, it often leads to difficult urination. This may be due to insufficiency of Heart and Kidney Qi, failing to keep the bladder cold (referring to dysfunction of Qi transformation), causing turbid and clear energies to interfere, resulting in various strangury diseases; or due to the twisting of the bladder ligaments (Baoxi), causing urinary retention, named Zhuanbao (Displacement of the Bladder). Also, when the full fetus causes involuntary leakage of urine without awareness, it is named Yi Niao (Urinary Incontinence). Each has its specific treatment prescriptions.
