One prescription, Zhike Yin (Thirst-Quenching Drink), treats pregnant women suffering from cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, with mental restlessness, agitation, and intense thirst.
Take one he of glutinous rice, soak until clean, grind finely, add one large cup of water, grind and filter to obtain the juice, add one he of honey and half a he of fresh ginger juice, mix well.
When thirsty, take it all at once; the symptoms will stop immediately. Suopi Yin (Splee-Constricting Drink) is also excellent.
Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), Hezi San (Chebula Powder), Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), Hu Jiao Tang (Pepper Decoction) from *Ju Fang* (*Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*), and Xiangru San (Elsholtzia Powder). (Prepare these in advance during summer to prevent cholera-like diseases. If such symptoms occur, treat them with these medicines for rapid effect, but they must be taken extremely cold. One variation includes Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and excludes Bian Dou (Dolichos Lablab Seed).) The above five prescriptions are all found in Volume 7, Treatise 2.
(These formulas) resolve latent heat, relieve irritability and thirst, clear summerheat toxicity, and stop vomiting and dysentery. After cholera-like disease, if excessive intake of hot-natured medicines causes irritability, it is advisable to chill the decoction by immersing it in cold water and take it all at once.
Caoguo Ren (Tsaoko Fructus Seed, 4 liang) Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh, 3 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2.5 liang)
Cut into small pieces. Take 0.5 liang per dose. Add one bowl of water and ten slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 80%, then keep warm in hot water or cool as desired.
It is stated: In general, diarrhea during pregnancy varies between cold and heat patterns. If the stool is watery, greenish-white or yellowish-white, or contains undigested food, accompanied by abdominal pain and borborygmus, with a weak and tight pulse, this is internal injury due to cold, termed Dongxie Handian (Profuse Diarrhea due to Cold in the Middle). If the diarrhea flows like water, is deep yellow with undigested food, urine is red, abdomen and hypochondrium are distended, there is irritability and a preference for drinking, and frequent vomiting; or if there is purging of clear water, or difficulty in urination, worsening with heat, with a deficient, large, and rapid pulse, this is caused by heat entering the stomach through deficiency, seeping into the lower jiao, failing to separate fluids, and flowing into the large intestine, termed Xieli (Accompanying Heat Dysentery). First use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to promote urination, then use Huanglian Ejiao Wan (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill) or Sanhuang Shuai Ai Tang (Three-Yellow and Cooked Mugwort Decoction). If the diarrhea is yellow with froth, accompanied by borborygmus, abdominal distension, and mild pain, with a deep, tight, and slightly rapid pulse, it is termed Lengre Budiao (Cold-Heat Disharmony), suitable for treatment with Wuji Wan (Wuji Pill). If there is sudden diarrhea, stool color either green or white, food digested or not, abdomen/hypochondrium distended or not, painful or not, but nausea upon smelling raw or cooked food, complete loss of appetite, with an internally deficient and externally excess pulse, and a deep, tight right Guan pulse, it is termed Sunxie (Undigested Food Diarrhea). First remove stagnation using Yinggan Wan (Miraculous Response Pill), then harmonize the body.
In treating diarrhea, one must first regulate the middle jiao, such as Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) or Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). Next, separate fluids and grains, such as Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria). If regulating the middle is ineffective, then stop the diarrhea using Yuyuliang (Hematitum) and Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum). (Alternatively, select general prescriptions from Volume 8, Treatise 8.)
