For women whose illnesses have not yet fully recovered, and due to exertion or movement, heat rises to the chest causing stiffness, spasm, and convulsions of the hands and feet resembling stroke (*Zhongfeng*), Qingzhuru Tang (Green Bamboo Shavings Decoction) is indicated.
Gualou Gen (Trichosanthes Root, 2 liang)
Danqing Zhuru (Light Green Bamboo Shavings, 0.5 sheng)
Add 2.5 sheng of water, decoct until 1.2 sheng remains, strain, and divide into three doses.
If a woman’s illness has not stabilized, and due to movement, she experiences acute pain in the lower abdomen, pain in the waist and hips, inability to support her limbs, weakness in movement, and fever, Danggui Baizhu Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) is indicated.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 1 fen), Sheng Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root, 1 piece, broken into 8 slices, each slice 1 fen), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 0.5 liang).
Chop the herbs, add 3 sheng of water, decoct until 1.5 sheng remains, strain, and take one tea cup full at once. After a short interval following a meal, take another dose. Cover warmly to induce slight sweating for recovery.
When a woman suffers from Shanghan (Cold Damage) with fever, and her menses happen to begin; if she is clear-minded during the day but becomes delirious at dusk, seeing visions as if of ghosts, this is Re Ru Xueshi (Heat Entering the Blood Chamber). Do not violate the Stomach Qi or affect the Upper and Middle Jiao; Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
When a woman suffers from Shangfeng (Wind Strike) for seven or eight days, subsequently developing alternating chills and fever occurring at regular times, and her menses happen to stop, this is also Re Ru Xueshi (Heat Entering the Blood Chamber). The blood must be congealed, thus causing symptoms resembling malaria. Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) should be taken.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, weighing 8 qian), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 3 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, weighing 2 qian).
Chop the herbs. For each dose, use 5 qian. Add 1.5 cups of water, 3 slices of ginger, and 2 jujubes. Decoct until 0.8 parts remain, strain, and take warm.
The *Siju Fang* (Formulas of the Bureau) version of Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) does not use Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), but only uses Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root) in equal proportion with Beichaihu (Northern Bupleurum Root) decocted together; this also treats this condition.
When a woman suffers from Shanghan (Cold Damage), her menstrual flow has just begun and then abruptly stopped, presenting with alternating chills and fever like malaria, delirious speech, and visual hallucinations of ghosts. Ganjiang Chaihu Tang (Dried Ginger and Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.

When a woman suffers from Shanghan (Cold Damage) with blood stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, pressing causes pain, and the area is too tender to be touched, Haige San (Clam Shell Powder) is indicated. For blood stagnation in the chest, the method dictates needling Qimen (LR14); Zhang Zhongjing left no herbal formula for this. This formula is suspected not to be by Zhang Zhongjing, but its rationale is sound, so it is retained here.
