Regarding the cause of irregular menstruation in women: it results from labor-induced damage to qi and blood, leading to a deficient constitution susceptible to wind-cold invasion. The pathogenic factor lodges in the uterus, damaging the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), as well as the Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. The Chong Mai and Ren Mai are known as the "Sea of Meridians" and both originate within the uterus. The Hand Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian are exterior-interior paired meridians that govern menstruation below. When wind-cold lodges in the meridians and contends with qi and blood, the blood becomes stagnant due to cold, causing menstruation to be unsmooth. Upon diagnosis, if the Cun Kou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is wiry and accompanied by severe abdominal pain, it indicates irregular menstruation and sores in the orifices. Additionally, a deep Liver pulse indicates involvement of the Jueyin Meridian. A deep pulse is yin in nature and indicates irregular menstruation with lower back and abdominal pain. A slippery Chi pulse (wrist pulse at the distal position) indicates abundant qi and blood but obstructed meridians. Furthermore, if the Chi pulse appears intermittent or absent, it indicates irregular menstruation. If the Cun and Guan pulses are regular and normal, but the Chi pulse is completely imperceptible, this also indicates irregular menstruation, typically accompanied by lower abdominal pain radiating to the lower back and qi stagnation attacking upward to the chest and diaphragm.
