Humans are born endowed with the upright qi of the Five Elements; if the qi is upright, the person is upright; if the qi is evil, the person becomes evil. If the qi is strong, the Shen (Spirit) is vigorous; if the qi declines, ghosts (pathogenic factors) arise. As stated in *Cifalun* (Discourse on Acupuncture Methods): "When the Shen loses its post, evil ghosts externally harass." This is such a case. However, regarding women dreaming of intercourse with evil spirits, there are two types of syndromes:
One type arises from lustful thoughts and evil reflections disturbing the will and dreams; here, the 'ghost' originates from the Heart, without external harassment. The other type arises from impure endowment, allowing evil to enter, so that demons dare to invade; this is also a case where evil comes from outside. Since causes of disease have internal and external origins, syndromes also differ. For diseases originating internally, there are no external physical traces, only frequent encounters in dreams leading to loss of essence, and syndromes such as mental confusion and turbid discharge, which share the same mechanism as nocturnal emission in men. It is just that women are often unwilling to speak of it. In contrast, for those invaded by external evil, the syndromes are different: some may laugh or speak abnormally, as if conversing with someone present; some prefer solitude and do not wish to see people; some weep inexplicably while their facial color remains unchanged; some have a peach-blossom hue on their face. Their pulse may be suddenly sparse or rapid, irregular (three or five beats out of rhythm), or deep and hidden, or hurried and knotted, or wiry and fine, or intermittent and changing unpredictably. These are all signs of demonic evil. If these two types are neglected and not regulated, and persist for a long time without healing, essence and blood will daily deteriorate, and True Yin will daily diminish, leading to tidal fever and fever, mental fatigue and physical lassitude, decreasing appetite, diminishing menstrual flow, emaciation, gradually forming consumptive disease. The pulse becomes tight and rapid, often leading to untreatable conditions. In treating this, although the causes may differ, the damage to essence and blood results in the same pathology. Therefore, for diseases originating in the Heart, one should first focus on calming the mind, then medicate according to the syndrome: calm the Shen for those with disturbed spirit, stabilize the Zhi (Will); consolidate essence for those with seminal leakage, nourish Yin. Particularly, one should focus on tonifying the Spleen and Kidney, securing the gateways, and assisting the generation of Qi. If invaded by demons, internally one should regulate and tonify upright Qi, such as using Guishen Tang, and externally one should quickly moxa the Guiku (Ghost Cry) acupoint to expel evil Qi, which will naturally lead to gradual recovery. For this acupoint, bind the thumbs of both hands together, and apply moxa cones at the corner of the nail where it meets the skin (riding the seam), ensuring that fire ignites at all four points where the nails meet the flesh on both sides for efficacy. Moxa either seven cones or fourteen cones. The big toes of both feet are also called Zu Guiyan (Foot Ghost Eye).
Guishen Tang (Return Spirit Decoction) from *Jiyan* (see *Furen Gui Ancient Formulas*) is used to treat women with dream intercourse, night sweats, mental confusion, limb weakness, and poor appetite.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria), Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 1 qian), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 8 fen), Yuanyanrou (Dimocarpus Longan Arillus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Hupo (Fossilia Subcorium) (powdered, each 5 fen).
