When a pregnant woman is ill, purgative methods should be employed, but treatment should cease when the pathogenic factor has been reduced by more than half. The Classic states: "Where there is pathology, there will be no injury." Since the medication matches the disease, what doubt remains?
[Note] If a pregnant woman has a pre-existing zheng mass (abdominal mass) or a new illness requiring purgation, only attack more than half of it; allow the remainder to resolve spontaneously. Do not exhaustively purge. The Classic says: "You gu wu yun" (Pathology exists, thus no injury). This means that although the medicine is potent, if there is pathology, the pathology receives the effect of the drug, and the fetus will not be harmed. By attacking more than half, matching the drug's strength with the disease, why adhere to the theory that pregnancy absolutely prohibits purgation?
Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction)
Taiwei buzhang (Fetal atrophy due to lack of nourishment) results from insufficient Qi and Blood. Bazhen Tang is suitable for Qi and Blood deficiency; Liujunzi Tang is suitable for Spleen deficiency and Stomach weakness, promoting the transformation of grain essence into Qi and Blood.
[Note] In the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, fetal atrophy occurs due to the mother's congenital weakness. If it belongs to Qi and Blood dual deficiency, Bazhen Tang should be used; if it involves Spleen deficiency and Stomach weakness, Liujunzi Tang should be used. As long as diet strengthens the body, allowing water and grain to transform into essence, Qi and Blood will generate daily, and the fetus will grow naturally!
Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) (Formulas are found in Volume 1)
Ziyin (Pregnancy-induced aphonia) presents as a thin, hoarse, and faint voice, not implying a complete absence of sound. This is because in the ninth month of pregnancy, the fullness of the fetus obstructs the meridians; after delivery, patency returns naturally.
[Note] In the ninth month of pregnancy, if the pregnant woman's voice is thin, hoarse, and not resonant, it is called Ziyin. It is not like absolute aphonia where no sound can be produced. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian connects to the root of the tongue. In the ninth month, the Kidney meridian nourishes the fetus; at this time, its qi becomes excessive and obstructs the meridian, preventing it from reaching the tongue root, hence the hoarse voice. After delivery, the Kidney meridian reconnects upwards, and the voice recovers naturally.
Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction)
Bell-like sounds in the abdomen or crying sounds of the infant indicate Zití (Fetal crying syndrome), which occurs occasionally. Ancient texts mention using soil from rat holes in empty rooms as a cure; Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction) can also be effective.
[Note] If a pregnant woman hears bell-like sounds in her abdomen or feels the infant crying inside, it is named Zití. Although recorded in ancient books, this condition is rare or occasional. Ancient prescriptions use soil from rat holes in empty rooms combined with Chuan Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) decocted in water, named Huanglian Jian (Coptis Decoction); drinking it leads to self-healing.
