Night crying is caused by coldness in the zang-organs. Yin qi prevails at night, causing cold to stir; when cold stirs, it leads to restlessness due to extreme yin, and pain due to severe cold, hence the unceasing night crying. Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction) is the primary formula. If the crying is due to heart heat and irritability, there must be symptoms such as a red face, white tongue coating, and dark, scanty urination. In this case, use Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Drink), removing Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), adding Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), decocting in water for administration. There are also cases of night crying caused by violating taboos; these can be treated with fumigation using charcoal soaked in vinegar, and Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pills) may be taken.
Ke Wu (External Intrusion) occurs because a child's Shen (Spirit) is tender and weak. External pathogenic qi or alien influences (such as animals or strange objects) suddenly contact and offend the child. The manifestations include startled crying, expulsion of green, yellow, and white froth from the mouth, mixed vomiting of food and fluids, alteration of facial complexion, rapid breathing, abdominal pain, tossing and turning with convulsions, resembling Jing Xian (Startled Epilepsy), but without upward rolling of the eyes. The pulse is wiry, rapid, and tense. Inspect the sides of the uvula in the mouth; if small nodules are present, puncture them immediately with a bamboo needle, or breaking them with fingernails is also effective. The treatment principle is to expel evil qi, support righteous qi, scatter fright, and calm the heart/mind. This is the superior approach; if delayed, it becomes difficult to treat. For any case of Ke Wu or Zhong E (Sudden Evil Invasion), urgently prepare charcoal soaked in vinegar, or use Jiangzhen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) and Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Fructus), fumigating with them, while administering Suhe Xiang Wan (Styrax Pills), which will lead to spontaneous recovery. For treating startled crying and persistent wailing, Longchi San (Dragon Bone Powder) from *Ben Shi Fang* is the primary formula; Huahuo Gao (Flower Fire Ointment) is also useful in emergencies.
The discussion states: The Heart stores the Shen (Spirit). When the Shen is peaceful, the zang-organs harmonize. Thus, children have stable spirits during the day and sleep soundly at night. If Heart Qi is disharmonious and pathogenic qi takes advantage, the spirit cannot remain stable, leading to sudden fright and crying. Anshen San (Calming the Spirit Powder) and similar formulas should be used. There is also the syndrome of "Tai Han" (Fetal Cold). During gestation, if the mother’s care is improper and she suffers wind-cold invasion, pathogenic qi enters the fetus. After birth, cold qi lingers in the body. Combined with irregular breastfeeding, pathogenic qi struggles with righteous qi, causing abdominal pain, tightness, and sighing/crying. Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pills) and similar formulas are indicated; for severe cold, Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) is used.
