Sun Simiao treated tetanus (muscle spasms/cramps) caused by cholera, as well as sudden and unexplained tetanus causing extreme suffering and near-death states, by moxibustion on the tips of both ankles, three moxa cones per ankle, with each cone sized like a mung bean. If the tetanus occurs in the inner thigh/leg, moxibustion is applied to the tips of both medial malleoli; if it occurs in the outer thigh/leg, moxibustion is applied to the tips of both lateral malleoli. The "ankle" refers to what is commonly called the ankle bone. The method is the same for men and women.
Ge Hong (Ge Xianweng) and Tao Hongjing (Tao Yinju) treated severe, unbearable toothache caused by wind pathogen, accompanied by inability to eat, by applying moxibustion to the tip of the lateral malleolus on the foot, three moxa cones, sized like a mung beans. For left-sided afflictions, treat the right side; for right-sided afflictions, treat the left side. The method is the same for men and women. The acupoints at the ankle are recorded in *Mingtang Jiu Jing* (Illustrated Manual of Moxibustion).
Hua Tuo treated conditions caused by invasion of spirits or demons, resulting in mania, delirium, and syncope, where various talismans and medicines were ineffective. He used a thin rope to bind both thumbs together and applied moxibustion, three cones. Each cone was placed at four points: half on the flesh and half on the nail bed. If any point was missed, the treatment would not be effective. During moxibustion, the patient might speak in the voice of ghosts or gods; by questioning them briefly, they could be commanded to leave, and the patient would subsequently regain consciousness. Refer to the diagram for specific point location. The method is the same for men and women.

Ge Hong, Tao Hongjing, and Sun Simiao described the treatment for death-like sleep paralysis (nightmare death): Anyone suffering from nightmare death does so because their spirit and qi were incomplete during daily life. When sleeping, the spirit fails to guard the residence, and the hun and po wander outside. They may be seized by powerful evil ghosts and unable to return, making the body appear like a corpse. It is strictly forbidden to use fire or light to illuminate, as this prevents the spirit and po from returning to the body. One should only call out to the person in the dark. Even if the nightmare was triggered by light, causing the spirit to exit due to brightness, one must still avoid using fire/light. Instead, have someone bite hard on the patient's heel (Zhong) and the side of the big toenail to revive them (hard biting is referred to as tong nie; Zhong means heel). Blowing powder made from Gleditsiae Fructus (Zao Jia Mo) into both nostrils is also effective. If the person does not revive after one or two double-hours (1-4 hours), apply moxibustion to each big toe, seven cones per toe, sized like a mung bean. Refer to the diagram for point location. For women with bound feet, this point is difficult to locate; instead, apply moxibustion to the point located three cun proximal to the wrist crease, between the two tendons, fourteen cones per side. This point is the same acupoint Zhen Quan used to treat sudden acute heart pain mentioned earlier. Refer to the previous diagrams for point location.
