The chapter "Regulating Nourishment Before Childbirth" states: First, eliminate anger. After conception, one must absolutely refrain from beating or scolding others. This is because when Qi (vital energy) is harmonious, the fetus is secure; when Qi rebels, fetal disease occurs. Anger causes Qi stagnation and obstruction; if Liver Qi (Liver Qi) surges upward, it leads to vomiting and epistaxis (nosebleed). If it injures the Spleen and Lung, and Liver Qi sinks downward, it results in metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding), leukorrhea (vaginal discharge), habitual abortion, or miscarriage. Those who wish to bear good children must first nourish their Qi. When Qi is properly nourished, the child will have a gentle disposition, possess filial piety and fraternal duty, and lack perverse habits. This is what is meant by "harmonious Qi brings auspiciousness," bringing blessings to the entire family, all of which stem from prenatal education.
Second, prohibit sexual exertion. Preserving the fetus prioritizes abstinence above all else. Observe that even lowly animals like cats and dogs know not to mate once pregnant; how much more so should humans, the spirit of all things, not fall short of them? Therefore, after menstruation ends for one or two days, following intercourse, women should sleep separately in different beds, maintaining a pure heart and quiet nourishment. This ensures easy delivery and nurturing, resulting in children with fewer illnesses and longer lives. If sexual activity is not handled with caution, it will inevitably lead to Yin deficiency with hyperactive Fire (Yin deficiency with fire flourishing), causing spontaneous abortion or habitual abortion. Can one be too cautious?
Third, avoid raw and cold foods. Pregnant women often crave raw and cold foods due to increased irritability and anger during pregnancy, combined with careless sexual activity, leading to hyperactive Fire and thirst. However, raw and cold substances cannot clear heat from the Blood level (Blood level). They merely injure the Spleen and Stomach, giving rise to diseases such as malaria, dysentery, vomiting, and diarrhea. Illness consumes Essence and Body Fluids (Jin-Ye), worsening thirst. Only by avoiding anger, being cautious with sexual activity, and taking herbs that invigorate the Spleen and nourish Blood can the root cause be regulated and health restored. Otherwise, collapse at childbirth and critical postpartum syndromes are inevitable.
Fourth, be cautious with cold and warmth. Contracting external pathogens during pregnancy, or catching Cold Damage (Shanghan) or seasonal epidemics, where stagnant heat fails to resolve, often leads to miscarriage or abortion, endangering life. One must understand that daily life and diet require utmost harmony. In summer, do not climb high floors; instead, stay close to the ground to absorb Earth Qi (Earth Qi). At night, do not sit outdoors exposed; keep the back and abdomen warm. As the ancients said, "Without exposure to cold, there is no fever; without wind injury, there is no cough." This is a critical juncture in pregnancy.
Fifth, take medication appropriately. During pregnancy and postpartum, medicine can revive the dying. Seeing the harms of misprescription, some claim that no medicine is needed during pregnancy and childbirth, confusing people's minds. This leads to neglecting proper regulation and supplementation, enduring suffering stubbornly, and forcing labor, causing various syndromes to arise like swarms of insects. If one knows how to manage and nourish properly, treating conditions as they arise, the merit of medicine in ensuring the safety of mother and child is indeed significant.
Sixth, favor quiet nourishment. Quiet nourishment during pregnancy is the supreme method. By not arguing over right and wrong, Qi is not injured. By not competing for gain and loss, Spirit (Shen) is not exhausted. Without jealousy in the heart, Blood naturally fills up. Without licentiousness in emotions, Essence naturally suffices. Peaceful tranquility constitutes prenatal education. It bears the heavy responsibility of continuing the ancestral line, pleasing the parents-in-law, harmonizing marital relations like zither and lute, and衍 (extending) the blessings of abundant offspring. Thus, the ancients emphasized quiet nourishment first. Those without children who follow it can conceive; those who are pregnant who follow it can nurture easily. Is the importance of quiet nourishment not great?
