The methods for enhancing fertility (Zizhong) have no fixed rules; medication should be tailored to the individual, as each person has their own suitability. Therefore, those with Cold patterns are suitable for warming therapies, those with Heat patterns for cooling therapies, those with Slippage (incontinence or leakage) for astringent therapies, and those with Deficiency for tonifying therapies. By removing these deviations, Yin and Yang will harmonize, and the transformative functions of life will manifest. Nowadays, people do not understand this principle but merely pass on prescriptions. How can what is suitable for one be suitable for another? Moreover, if someone happens to succeed by chance, they may indiscriminately spread its miraculous reputation without considering suitability, leading others to compete in taking it. Do they not know that a hat fitting Zhang San may not fit Li Si?
Regarding diet and beverages, different individuals' Zang-Fu Qi have different preferences, so one need not be overly rigid. However, excessive alcohol consumption is unsuitable. The congenital Qi of the fetal origin (Taiyuan) requires utmost clarity and fullness. Alcohol possesses a licentious and hot nature; it not only disturbs the Shen (Spirit) but also disrupts the Jing (Essence). When Jing is disturbed by alcohol, half becomes damp-heat and half suffers from depletion of true Essence. If Essence is not substantial, the fetal origin will not be secure. If Essence contains much damp-heat, conditions such as smallpox/rash (Douzhen), convulsions/wind (Jingfeng), and Spleen failure (Pibai) in later years are likely already determined at conception. Thus, those wishing to select an auspicious time for conception must exercise caution. It is better to drink less than more, and better to drink less than not to drink at all. This is a major mechanism concerning the fetal origin. Those planning for offspring should not treat this as a secondary matter.
Diseases affecting pregnancy differ by gender: in men, it concerns Jing (Essence); in women, it concerns Blood (Xue). These are invariably due to insufficiency. In men, insufficiency may manifest as seminal emission (Jinghua), clear semen, cold semen, lack of firmness during intercourse, dribbling without ejaculation, frequent nocturnal emissions, turbid urine with dysuria, or Yin Deficiency caused by excessive sexual activity, leading to soreness and fatigue of the lower back and kidneys. Alternatively, practices such as homosexuality (Nanfeng) may lead to Extreme Yang, resulting in hyperactivity and loss of Yin. Forcing retention of semen may lead to unresolved conflict between victory and defeat. Pre-existing Yin Hernia (Yinshan, referring to scrotal disorders) causes disconnection between Liver and Kidney. Additionally, Yang Decline leads to excess Cold, while Yin Deficiency leads to excess Heat. All these are male pathologies and cannot be entirely blamed on the woman. If the cause is identified and treatment is indicated, it should be administered; if reversal therapy is needed, it should be applied. One must first regulate oneself before attending to the wife, then success is assured.
