暑湿燥火也。且初之气,自年十二月大寒节起,至立春雨水惊蛰前终止,乃厥阴风水用事;
二之气,自二月春分节起,至清明谷雨立夏终止,乃少阴君火用事;三之气,自四月小满节
起,至芒种夏至小暑终止,乃少阳相火用事;四之气,自六月大暑节起,至立秋处暑白露终
止,乃太阴湿土用事;五之气,自八月秋分节起,至寒露霜降立冬终止,乃阳明燥金用事;
Chart of the Five Movements (Wu Yun)
In years of Jia and Ji, the movement is Earth. Earth favors warmth and dislikes cold. It is appropriate to add warm agents to assist it. In years of Yi and Geng, the movement is Metal. Metal favors clarity (coolness) and should not be dry; it is appropriate to add neutral agents to clear it. In years of Bing and Xin, the movement is Water. Water desires warmth, but cold causes stagnation; it is appropriate to add hot agents to warm it. In years of Ding and Ren, the movement is Wood. Wood detests cold and fears dryness; it is appropriate to add harmonizing agents to balance it. In years of Wu and Gui, the movement is Fire. Fire favors cold and should not be hot; it is appropriate to add cooling agents to resolve it.
Chart of the Six Qi (Liu Qi)
In years of Zi, Wu, Mao, and You, Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire governing summer heat) governs the Heaven (upper half of the year) and the Spring (lower half of the year), and it is appropriate to treat with clearing methods. In years of Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei, Taiyin Shitu (Damp Earth governing late summer dampness) and Taiyang Hanshui (Cold Water governing winter cold) govern the Heaven and the Spring, and it is appropriate to treat with warming methods. In years of Yin, Shen, Si, and Hai, Shaoyang Xianghuo (Assistant Fire) and Jueyin Fengmu (Wind Wood governing spring wind) govern the Heaven and the Spring, and it is appropriate to use cooling agents to harmonize them. However, one must also observe the disease to adjust treatment and cannot adhere rigidly to a single method.
Fu Hui said: The sky has four seasons, and the year has six Qi; these are the external factors. The four seasons refer to Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter; the six Qi refer to Wind, Cold, Heat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire. Furthermore, the First Qi begins at the Great Cold solar term in December of the previous year and ends before Lichun (Start of Spring), Yushui (Rain Water), and Jingzhe (Awakening of Insects); this is when Jueyin Fengshui (Wind-Water) is in charge. The Second Qi begins at the Chunfen (Spring Equinox) solar term in February and ends before Qingming (Clear and Bright), Guyu (Grain Rain), and Lixia (Start of Summer); this is when Shaoyin Junhuo is in charge. The Third Qi begins at the Xiaoman (Grain Buds) solar term in April and ends before Mangzhong (Grain in Ear), Xiazhi (Summer Solstice), and Xiaoshu (Minor Heat); this is when Shaoyang Xianghuo is in charge. The Fourth Qi begins at the Dashu (Great Heat) solar term in June and ends before Liqiu (Start of Autumn), Chushu (End of Heat), and Bailu (White Dew); this is when Taiyin Shitu is in charge. The Fifth Qi begins at the Qiufen (Autumn Equinox) solar term in August and ends before Hanlu (Cold Dew), Shuangjiang (Frost Descent), and Lidong (Start of Winter); this is when Yangming Zaojin is in charge. The Sixth Qi begins at the Xiaoxue (Minor Snow) solar term in October and ends before Daxue (Major Snow), Dongzhi (Winter Solstice), and Xiaohan (Minor Cold); this is when Taiyang Hanshui is in charge. Spring is warm, Summer is hot, Autumn is cool, and Winter is cold. When the four seasons follow their order and the six Qi are regulated, how can diseases arise? If they exceed the norm, disaster ensues, leading inevitably to eye diseases. As for the detailed subdivision of the six Qi, it has been listed in detail in the subsequent volumes.
