冲和养胃汤(见卷二)
When looking at a stationary object, it appears to shake or move; this is due to insufficient Kidney Water and the upward disturbance of Fire pathogenic factors. If not controlled, leading to the descent of Shen Guang (spiritual light/vision), one will regret not heeding the doctor's advice back then.
This condition refers to perceiving stationary objects as vibrating or shaking. It is caused by Fire pathogenic factors in the Qi level harming the body, where Kidney Water fails to restrain them, causing Yang pathogens and deficient Fire to rotate upward, resulting in tremors and instability in vision or head movement.
The Shen Guang (vision) is about to descend; if prolonged, even the ground may appear to move, leading to the formation of internal cataracts. Those who indulge in alcohol, crave dry and hot foods, suffer from Head Wind Phlegm-Fire, or have Yin deficiency and Blood insufficiency often experience this ailment. It is suitable to take:
Gouteng San (Uncaria Decoction)
Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Jia Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baifuling (Poria), Lurong (Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum), Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts).
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, with three slices of fresh ginger, decocted in water.
Seeing objects inverted is the most peculiar disease, caused by Head Wind, Phlegm-Qi, and Fire. Repeated reversal of Yin and Yang damages the Shen Guang, making houses seem to collapse and the earth to shift. Do not say that dizziness has no other consequences; only when blindness occurs will one regret missing the opportunity for medical treatment.
This condition refers to seeing everything vibrating and inverted. It is like spinning around and then stopping; objects appear to move or stand upside down. This is because the Qi mechanism is disordered, Yin and Yang reverse repeatedly, damaging the True Yuan (Primal Qi), weakening Yin Essence, while Yang pathogens attack upward, causing deficient vertigo and tremors. Some patients suffer several attacks a year, others several times a month. If objects appear inverted during an attack, it indicates that Shen Guang has descended. Treatment should differentiate the cause—whether due to Wind, Deficiency, Phlegm, or Fire—and treat accordingly. If wind-induced vertigo is disregarded, and lifestyle habits continue to damage the body, internal cataracts are inevitable. It is suitable to take:
Lingyangjiao San (Saiga Tataricae Cornu Decoction)
Zhi Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum, processed seven times), Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 2.5 qian), Fushen (Poria cum Radix et Wood), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, finely powdered) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above herbs into coarse powder. Take four qian per dose, with three slices of fresh ginger, decocted, strained, and taken warm.
Seeing one object as two results from Yin-Yang imbalance, insufficiency of Liver and Kidney, and scarcity of essence. Shen Guang is about to fall from the pupil; seek medical help urgently rather than merely praying. Without a skilled physician to regulate the True Yuan, how long will the internal cataract haze last? If accompanied by redness and pain but mild symptoms, recovery is easy once Fire subsides. However, chronic diplopia (seeing double constantly) is difficult to treat, and early restoration of vision should not be expected.
This condition refers to perceiving a single object as two. It is caused by the depletion and decay of Shen Guang, with obstruction and damage on one side. The pathology lies in the Gallbladder and Kidney. Insufficiency of the True Essence of the Gallbladder and Kidney causes the "Solar Light" (Yang function) to lose its support, resulting in visual confusion and diplopia. If the eyes are red and painful with diplopia, it is due to Fire stagnating in the collaterals, preventing Yin Essence from ascending to nourish Shen Guang, allowing Yang pathogens to disturb Shen Guang and cause double vision. For example, during eye disease, one lamp may appear as two or three lamps. It is suitable to take:
Bugan San (Liver-Nourishing Decoction)
Treats Liver-Wind internal cataracts characterized by no pain or itching, with visual hallucinations of flowers or colors (yellow, white, black, red), or difficulty distinguishing one object as having two shapes.
Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chuan Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Heixuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix Nigricans) (each 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baifuling (Poria) (each 2 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, powdered) (each 3 liang).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose after meals, mixed with rice water.
Qianjin Cizhu Wan (Thousand-Gold Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill) (See Volume II, indicated for improving vision; regular use allows people over a hundred to read small print, greatly benefiting the eyes. Note: In this formula, Cishi (Magnetitum) corresponds to Water entering the Kidney, Zhusha (Cinnabaris) corresponds to Fire entering the Heart, and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) enters the Spleen and Stomach. This reflects the Daoist principle of the "Yellow Matriarch" mediating between the infant (Kidney) and mother (Heart). Ni Sheng's explanation was overly verbose. Adding Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), 5 qian, to regulate the ascent and descent of Water and Fire is particularly effective.)
Ancient physicians frequently used Cishi (Magnetitum) in formulas for Kidney deficiency and fertility. Modern practitioners, constrained by the notion that metallic minerals are hard to digest, rarely use it. However, since Cishi attracts iron, using it leverages its ability to guide Lung Metal Qi into the Kidney, promoting mutual generation between mother (Metal) and child (Water). When Water is clarified by Metal, Ministerial Fire retreats spontaneously. Alas! The subtlety of medicine lies in profound mysteries; such words can only be understood by those with insight.
