决明益阴丸(见卷二)
Fear of Sunlight and Shyness to Bright Light Syndrome: Treatment is applied according to two conditions, excess (Shi) and deficiency (Xu). Eye pain accompanied by redness and swelling indicates stagnation in the collaterals and sluggish Qi circulation. Blazing fire combined with Spleen dryness requires differentiation among the Heart, Liver, and Spleen. By distinguishing and treating the pathogenic excess, the disease is not difficult to dispel. If there is no pain, redness, or swelling, it is solely due to Blood deficiency.
This syndrome refers to eye pain, astringency, and aversion to light making it impossible to open the eyes in bright places. Among all eye diseases, seven or eight out of ten cases present this complaint; the pathological origin lies in the Heart, Liver, and Liver meridians (Zu Jue Yin Gan Jing). In summary, it is merely Fire dryness and Heat in the Blood, located in the Yang aspect (Yang Fen), hence the aversion to tears, astringency, and pain upon exposure to brightness. Since one's own essence and light are weak, they cannot withstand sunlight. Therefore, dark places feel refreshing, yet there is a distinction between excess and deficiency. Fear of heat belongs to an excess condition, while shyness to bright light belongs to a deficiency condition. If the eyes are not red or painful but fear brightness, it is due to insufficiency in the Blood aspect, scanty Gallbladder juice, and weak collaterals, thus unable to transport essence to withstand sunlight. The following preparations are suitable:
Mingmu Xixin Decoction (Brightening Eyes Asarum Decoction): Treats redness and slight pain in both eyes, shyness to bright light and sun, aversion to wind-cold, fear of fire, eyelashes matted together, excessive turbid discharge, astringency making opening difficult, swelling and oppression at the brow, nasal congestion, thick sticky sputum and saliva, and slightly hard stool.
Chuanxiong Rhizome (4 fen), Gaoben Rhizome, Danggui Radix Segment, Baifuling Poria, Honghua Flower, Xixin Herb (2 fen each), Shengdihuang Prepared Rehmannia Root (wine-processed), Manjingzi Vitex Fruit (6 fen each), Fangfeng Saposhnikovia Root, Qianghuo Notopterygium Rhizome, Jingjiesui Schizonepeta Spike (1 qian each), Chuanhuajiao Zanthoxylum Pericarpium (10 grains), Mahuang Ephedra Stem (8 fen), Taoren Prunus Seed (soaked, skin and tip removed, 10 seeds).
Crush the ingredients. Decoct with two zhong of water until reduced to eight parts, remove the dregs, and take warm before sleep. Note: This formula acts on the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
Guikui Tang (also known as Lianqiao Yinzi): Treats sensation of fire flowing in the eyes, aversion to sun and fire, astringency, tightness at the canthus, blurred vision after prolonged looking, and tearing when facing the wind.
Lianqiao Forsythia Fruit, Hongkuihua Hibiscus Petal, Danggui Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Renshen Ginseng Radix, Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix, Manjingzi Vitex Fruit, Shengdi Rehmanniae Radix (5 fen each), Shengma Cimicifugae Rhizoma (8 fen), Huangqin Scutellariae Radix, Jiu Huangqin Scutellariae Radix (wine-processed), Fangfeng Saposhnikovia Root, Qianghuo Notopterygium Rhizome (7 fen each), Chaihu Bupleuri Radix (2 fen).
Crush the ingredients. Decoct with two zhong of plain water until reduced to eight parts, and take warm well after meals. Note: This formula acts on the Foot-Taiyang, Foot-Yangming, Foot-Shaoyang meridians, Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Chuiyun Ointment: Treats visual fatigue and weakness, astringency making opening difficult, excessive discharge after sleep, tearing from the eyes, tearing upon exposure to wind-cold, shyness to bright light and sun, frequent desire to close the eyes, preference for dark rooms with blocked windows and doors, and nebula covering the pupil. Applying this ointment frequently yields miraculous effects.
Fangfeng Saposhnikovia Root, Qingpi Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium, Lianqiao Forsythia Fruit (4 fen each), Shengdihuang Prepared Rehmannia Root (1.5 qian), Xixin Herb (1 fen), Chaihu Bupleuri Radix (5 fen), Gancao Glycyrrhizae Radix, Danggui Radix Segment (6 fen each), Huanglian Coptidis Rhizoma (3 qian), Ruiren Persicae Semen (skin and tip removed), Shengma Cimicifugae Rhizoma (3 fen each), Jingjiesui Schizonepeta Spike (1 qian, use concentrated juice).
Crush the ingredients. Excluding Lianqiao, decoct the other herbs in two bowls of pure water until half a bowl remains. Add Lianqiao and decoct until one large cup remains. Remove dregs, pour into a silver vessel, and simmer over mild to moderate heat until dripping water forms beads. Add a small amount of cooked honey, mix evenly, and apply to the eyes.
