Regular Head Wind and Brain Pain
This condition may recur one or two days after acupuncture, with pain as severe as before. However, the head is the meeting point of all Yang meridians; treatment should employ tonification first followed by sedation. It is advisable to use more sedation and less tonification. If tonification and sedation are applied incorrectly, recurrence will be even more severe.
Acupuncture should be performed on Baihui (GV20), Hegu (LI4), and Shangxing (GV23) using the sedation method, which will invariably be effective. For recurrent attacks, additionally needle Shangxing (GV23) and Taiyang (EX-HN5).
Regular Headache (pain in the center of the head): Onset in the morning leads to death by evening; onset in the evening leads to death by morning. Physicians must utilize heart-point pricking therapy. Otherwise, it is difficult to treat. True regular head wind is a fatal condition among ten deaths. It is also known as Kidney Jue Headache.
Facial Paralysis (Deviation of Mouth and Eye)
This condition is caused by sleeping in the draft after intoxication, allowing pathogenic factors to invade the collaterals, accompanied by phlegm-fluid retention. It can also result from anger injuring the Liver or excessive sexual activity. Initially, needle Jiache (ST6), Hegu (LI4), Dicang (ST4), and Renzhong (GV26). If there is no improvement, subsequently needle Dicang (ST4), Hegu (LI4), Chengjiang (CV24), and Tongziliao (BL1).
Vertex Headache
This condition arises from the failure of Yin and Yang to distinguish, with wind pathogens invading Naohu (GV19), rendering acupuncture ineffective. First eliminate phlegm, then dispel wind, and efficacy will naturally follow. Initially needle Baihui (GV20), Houding (GV18), and Hegu (LI4). If ineffective, subsequently needle Fengchi (GB20), Hegu (LI4), and Zusanli (ST36).
Head Wind with Dizziness
This condition is often due to sexual intercourse after heavy drinking and eating, without avoiding wind and cold while lying down, allowing thief-wind to enter the collaterals. Needle Jiexi (ST41), Hegu (LI4), and Fenglong (ST40). Upon recurrence, needle Fengchi (GB20), Shangxing (GV23), and Zusanli (ST36).
Exterior Obstruction Eye Disease
This results from head wind pouring into the pupil, causing blood and Qi surging, with excess above and deficiency below. Needle Taiyang (EX-HN5), Jingming (BL1), Hegu (LI4), and Xiaogu Kong (EX-UE7). If ineffective, subsequently needle Linqi (GB15), Cuanzhu (BL2), and Zusanli (ST36).
Eye Opacity and Membrane Formation
The pathology is deep-seated and cannot be cured by a single acupuncture session. Initially needle Jingming (BL1) and Hegu (LI4). If ineffective, three sessions of acupuncture are required. Upon recurrence, needle Taiyang (EX-HN5) and Guangming (GB37).
Cold Tearing in the Wind
This condition occurs after drunkenness exposed to wind, or acute red painful eyes where sexual activity is not avoided, and consumption of hot-natured foods is unrestrained. Women often suffer this from sitting exposed to wind postpartum, allowing thief-wind to invade the eyes. Or during menstruation, sexual contact allows turbid qi to rush to the head and eyes. Needle Cuanzhu (BL2), Hegu (LI4), Dagukong (EX-UE6), and Xiaogu Kong (EX-UE7). If not fully healed, re-needle Xiaogu Kong (EX-UE7).
Acute Red Swollen and Painful Eyes
This condition is caused by seasonal pathogens, stagnation of blood and Qi, sleeping in the draft, irregular meals, and overexertion. Initially needle Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Taiyang (EX-HN5), and Jingming (BL1). If ineffective, subsequently needle Cuanzhu (BL2), Taiyang (EX-HN5), and Sizhukong (TE23).
Red Swelling, Astringency, Ulceration around the Eye
This condition results from sexual activity after heavy drinking and eating, leading to stagnation of blood and Qi, rubbing with hands, and invasion of thief-wind. Initially needle Hegu (LI4) and Erjian (LI2). If ineffective, subsequently needle Jingming (BL1) and Zusanli (ST36).
Interior Obstruction Eye Disease
This condition is caused by anger injuring the Liver, blood failing to reside in its vessel, exhaustion of Kidney Water, and dissipation of blood and Qi. Initial negligence, unrestrained sexual desire, and excessive mental exertion make it difficult to treat. Initially needle Linqi (GB15), Jingming (BL1), Hegu (LI4), and Tongziliao (BL1). If ineffective, needle Guangming (GB37) and Fengchi (GB20).
Photophobia and Fear of Sunlight
This condition involves acute pain, exposure to wind while traveling, invasion into the eyes, blood failing to reside, and the Liver failing to store blood. Tears flow when viewing lamps; sourness and astringency occur when seeing sunlight; pain makes opening the eyes difficult. Needle Cuanzhu (BL2), Hegu (LI4), Xiaogu Kong (EX-UE7), and Erjian (LI2). If not healed, subsequently needle Jingming (BL1) and Xingjian (LR2).
Oblique and Regular Head Wind
This condition involves phlegm-fluid stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, with thief-wind invading Naohu (GV19). Oblique and regular head wind causes pain in half of the facial skin and flesh upon attack, or cold limbs. Untreated for a long time, it transforms into paralysis. Differentiate Yin and Yang for needling. Ineffectiveness may be due to insufficient needle force. Initially needle Fengchi (GB20), Hegu (LI4), and Sizhukong (TE23). Subsequently sedate Zusanli (ST36) to dispel wind. After needling, refer to points Sizhukong (TE23) and Xiedai (Jiexi ST41).
Red Swelling and Painful Eyes
This condition arises from unresolved Cold Damage combined with sexual activity, resulting in excess above and deficiency below, with Qi and Blood congested upward. Untreated head wind may cause blood to flood the pupil. Acute red swelling and pain, or anger injuring the Liver, sexual activity poisoning the Heart and Liver meridians, irregular diet, hunger, fullness, drunkenness, and fatigue all cause this condition. Heart Fire flares upward and does not dissipate. Postpartum women suffering from anger injuring the Liver, within the confinement period, cannot be cured instantly but gradually, ensuring efficacy. Initially needle Jingming (BL1), Linqi (GB15), and Hegu (LI4). If not healed, subsequently needle Fengchi (GB20), Taiyang (EX-HN5), and Xingjian (LR2).
Baihui (also known as Sanyang Wuhui, Dianshang, Tianman): Located 1.5 cun posterior to Qding (GV21), at the center of the vertex, in the whorl of hair, large enough to hold a bean. Directly opposite the tips of both ears. It is the intersection of the Du Meridian, Foot-Taiyang, Hand-Shaoyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Foot-Jueyin meridians. Puncture 0.2 cun, moxa 5 cones. *Jia Yi Jing* states: puncture 0.3 cun, moxa 3 cones. Another view: moxibustion on the top of the head should not exceed 7 cones. Indications: Head wind, headache.
Hegu (also known as Hukou): Located in the depression between the metacarpal bones of the thumb and index finger. The Hand-Yangming passes through here as the Yuan-Source point. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 6 breaths, moxa 3 cones.
Indications: Oblique and regular headache, facial swelling, eye opacity. *Shennong Bencao Jing* states: treats epistaxis, blurred vision. *Xi Hong Fu* states: If Jingming is ineffective for eye diseases, Hegu and Guangming are indispensable. *Qian Jin* Eleven Points states: Quchi combined with Hegu can penetrate headache pain. *Ma Dan Yang Twelve Heavenly Stars* states: Treats headache, facial swelling, body heat, sweating, dim vision.
Shangxing (also known as Shentang): Located directly above the nose, 1 cun inside the hairline, in the depression large enough to hold a bean. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 6 breaths, moxa 5 cones. One view suggests bleeding with a three-edged needle to drain heat from all Yang meridians.
Indications: Head wind, headache, nasal congestion, dizziness, eye pain preventing far vision. Pricking with a three-edged needle drains heat from all Yang meridians, preventing it from rushing to the head and eyes.
Shenting (Directly above the nose, 0.5 cun inside the hairline; if the hairline is high, the hairline itself is the point; if low, add 0.2-0.3 cun). Intersection of the Du Meridian, Foot-Taiyang, and Foot-Yangming. Moxa 3 cones, contraindicated for needling. Needling causes mania and blindness. Another view: moxa 7 cones, up to 21 cones.
Indications: Mania, climbing heights and walking aimlessly, wind epilepsy, opisthotonos, eyes rolling up, inability to recognize people, head wind, rhinitis, continuous runny nose, headache, tearing, fullness, panting, thirst, palpitations, insomnia.
Tongziliao (also known as Taiyang, Qianguan): Located 0.5 cun lateral to the outer canthus. Intersection of the Hand-Taiyang, Hand-Shaoyang, and Foot-Shaoyang meridians. Puncture 0.3 cun, moxa 3 cones.
Indications: Headache, itchy eyes, redness and pain in the outer canthus, opacity, amaurosis, blurred distant vision, excessive tearing and discharge.
Jiache (also known as Jiguan, Quya): Located in the depression near the anterior end of the cheekbone below the ear, take position by lying down and opening the mouth. Puncture 0.3 cun, moxa 3 cones. Another view: moxa 7 to 49 cones, cone size like a wheat grain.
Indications: Stroke, locked jaw, aphasia, facial paralysis, cheek swelling, toothache, inability to chew, stiff neck unable to turn back. For facial paralysis, sedate the left and tonify the right; for deviation, tonify the left and sedate the right. *Yu Long Fu* states: Combined with Dicang, treats facial deviation.
Dicang (also known as Huiwei): Located 0.4 cun lateral to the corner of the mouth. If there is a slight pulse nearby, or if chronic wind disease causes immobility of the Liver channel. Intersection of the Hand-Yangming, Foot-Yangming, Ren Mai, and Yang Qiao Mai. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 5 breaths, moxa 7 cones, or 14 cones, up to 49 cones for severe cases. Treat the affected side oppositely (left disease treat right, right disease treat left). Moxa cones should be small, like a thick hairpin tip. If too large, the mouth deviates further; moxa Chengjiang to cure.
Indications: Hemiplegia, facial paralysis, locked jaw, toothache, cheek swelling, inability to close eyes, aphasia, inability to control food and drink, drooling, eyelid twitching, blurred distant vision, dim vision.
Houding (also known as Jiaochong): Located 1.5 cun posterior to Baihui (GV20), on the occipital bone. Puncture 0.2 cun, moxa 5 cones.
Indications: Stiff neck, pain in the forehead and skull, migraine, aversion to wind, blurred vision.
Linqi (Located above the eye, 0.5 cun inside the hairline, align with the pupil). Intersection of the Foot-Taiyang, Foot-Shaoyang, and Yang Wei Mai. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 7 breaths.
Indications: Nasal congestion, blurred vision with opacity, excessive discharge and cold tearing, various eye diseases, convulsive epilepsy with upward gaze. *Bai Zheng Fu* states: Combined with Touwei, treats tearing from the eyes.
Zusanli (also known as Xialing, from *Ben Shu* chapter): Located 3 cun below the knee, lateral to the tibia, in the depression within the large tendon. Sit with knee vertical, lower foot to locate. Press heavily until the dorsal artery stops. The Foot-Yangming enters here as the He-Sea point. Puncture 0.5 cun, retain for 6 breaths, moxa 3 cones. *Qian Jin* states: moxa 200 to 500 cones. Another view: children should avoid moxa on Zusanli; only after age 30. Otherwise, illness may arise. Autumn months are unsuitable for bleeding, fearing Earth deficiency.
Indications: Drains stomach and epigastric heat, same as Qichong and Zhiyang. Qin Chengzu said: Knee soreness and pain, blurred vision. *Wai Tai Ming Tang* states: Those over thirty who do not moxa Zusanli will have Qi rushing to the eyes, causing loss of vision, because Zusanli descends Qi.
Fengchi: Located behind the ear, in the depression posterior to the temporal muscle and below Naokong, at the hairline. Pressing draws sensation to the ear. Another view: depression behind the ear, lateral to the large tendon at the posterior hairline. Intersection of the Foot-Shaoyang and Yang Wei Mai. Puncture 0.4 cun, moxa 3 to 7 cones, cone should not be large.
Indications: Stroke, oblique and regular headache, stiff neck feeling like pulling, pain preventing turning, dizziness, red painful eyes with tearing. *Tong Xuan Fu* states: For dizziness and blurred vision, seek Fengchi.
Sizhukong (also known as Mu Chou): Located in the depression posterior to the eyebrow. *Jia Yi Jing* states: Emission of Foot-Shaoyang Qi. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 3 breaths, contraindicated for moxa. Moxa is unfortunate, causing small eyes and blindness.
Indications: Headache, red and blurry eyes, blurred vision, trichiasis, wind epilepsy with upward gaze, mania with foaming at the mouth, oblique and regular head wind. *Tong Xuan Fu* states: For unbearable migraine, transmit to treat red painful eyes, puncture 0.1 cun to bleed.
Renzhong (also known as Shuigou): Located in the depression in the philtrum. Intersection of the Du Meridian, Hand-Yangming, and Foot-Yangming. Puncture 0.3 cun, retain for 6 breaths, sedate upon arrival of Qi, moxa 3 to 7 cones, cone size like wheat. Moxibustion is inferior to needling.

Question: Why are Jingming, Yingxiang, Chengqi, and Sizhukong contraindicated for moxa?
Answer: These points are near the eyes, and the eyes fear fire, hence moxa is contraindicated. By analogy, Jingming cannot be moxa. For moxa on the head and face, cones should be the size of wheat grains, and excessive moxa should be avoided because the head and face are the summit of all Yang meridians. For the limbs, cones can be slightly larger; for the back and abdomen, they can be larger still, and excessive moxa is permissible. Excessive moxa on limbs causes them to become thin and withered. Thin individuals should be needled shallowly in spring and summer; obese individuals should be needled deeply in autumn and winter. This is the general principle of acupuncture and moxibustion.
Ancient practitioners used a washing method after moxibustion to extinguish the fire. Boil red-skinned green onions and mint leaves in water to wash the area around the burn wound for about one hour, driving out wind and dispersing it from the wound, ensuring smooth meridian flow and natural recovery. After the scab falls off from the moxa fire, wash with decoction of tender green bark from peach branches grown in the southeast to protect the wound from wind. If the wound is black and rotting, add cilantro to the wash. If pain is unbearable, add Coptis chinensis (Huanglian) to the wash, which is miraculous.
