The above are ground into fine powder. Made into pills with refined honey. Size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take forty pills each time. Swallow with plain boiled water on an empty stomach.
Whenever treating eye diseases by applying eye drops, one must follow the hours. Every day, application should only begin from Si hour to Wu hour. Because human yin and yang correspond to heaven and earth. After Zi hour, one Yang arises. After Wu hour, one Yin arises. This is precisely when Yang grows. Fire also arises. If medication is applied at this time, the fire energy becomes hard to restrain. Wu hour belongs to Yin. Only then is it suitable to apply medication. Whether ointment, powder, or concretion, use a rhinoceros horn bone stick. If it is a concretion/ointment, it must be moistened with water and milk to dissolve. If it is a powder, pick it up dry. In all cases, start by applying a tiny amount. If the eye tolerates the medication, slightly increasing the amount is acceptable. Do not let the patient fear application due to pain. Even if it is an immortal pill, if the patient fears it, it will not work. The physician must use light hands. Slowly administer medication according to the condition. Instruct the patient to close eyes and lie supine. Sit still for a long time. Strictly avoid wild thoughts and excessive talking. Mild cases can be applied two or three times. Severe cases three or four times. Each time, use a stick to clear out residue completely. Do not over-apply. Over-application may not feel refreshing. It might agitate fire energy. Repeatedly worsening the affliction.
Lingfei San (Treats eye diseases. Reduces swelling, stops tearing, brightens eyes. Removes nebula, reduces redness, relieves pain. Absorbs dampness, removes ulceration. All such symptoms.)
Luganshi (Calcined until red-hot, quenched in child's urine seven times, washed with water until clean, dried. Use one liang per dose) Mingshazha (Cinnabaris) Hupo (Amberum) Zhenzhu (Margarita) Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus) Zhenxiongdan (Ursi Bile) (All separately ground to fine powder, Nifen [Calomelas] one qian each) Lingyao (Two qian)
Mix evenly and finely. Each time, use a toothpick stick to pick a small amount for eye application. Close eyes for a moment. Apply again. Close eyes for a moment. Wait for the drug effect to pass. Then use a stick to remove residue. Wash clean with warm water. Apply two or three times daily. Keeping eyes closed for a long time is ideal.
Attached Lingyao Formula: Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) Heiqian (Plumbum) (Each five fen) Huoxiao (Natrii Nitratis) (Eight qian) Guanpeng (Borax) (Two qian)
First melt the lead. Add mercury to form a unified alloy. Add nitre and borax. Grind evenly. Place in a Yangcheng jar. Seal tightly with salt mud. Ignite for three incense sticks' duration. Start with mild fire, then strong fire. Cool down. Remove and set aside. This method prepares Lingfei San. In this powder, Luganshi absorbs dampness and removes ulceration. Lingyao grinds away nebula and clears vision. Shazha, Hupo, Zhenzhu, Niuhuang, Xiongdan are detoxifying, clearing heat, stopping tearing, reducing redness, and brightening eye agents. They can be used for any eye disease with external symptoms.
Wudan Gao (Treats all heat-fire red eyes. Tearing, ulcerated eyelid margins. Photophobia and heat intolerance. Pain or itching.)
Xiongdan (Ursi Bile) Qingdan (Scombridae Bile) Lidan (Cyprini Carpio Bile) Zhudan (Suis Bile) Yangdan (Ovis Aries Bile) Chuanmi (Mel) (Equal parts)
Place bile and honey in a silver or copper pot. Simmer over low heat until forming an ointment. Remove and store in a porcelain box. Remove "fire poison". Highly effective for eye application.
In eye pathology, internal heat causes red eyelids. Liver heat causes tearing. Mild heat causes itching. Intense itching causes swelling and pain. Itching or pain is caused by fire. Qi heat causes turbid spirit and dizziness. Thus, one cannot see during the day. Those with excess Yang prefer water and dislike fire. Thus, eyes cannot approach light sources. As the classics say: "When heaven is bright, sun and moon are not distinct; evil harms the orifices." The bitterness of the five biles clears heat. The moisture of honey nourishes and balances fire. Moreover, various biles are the essence of Jia Wood. Honey is the essence of hundred flowers. Both have the wonder of nourishing Yi orifices.
Qiongye Gao (Treats all chronic eye conditions refractory to treatment.)
Xiongdan (Ursi Bile) Niuhuang (Bovis Calculus) Pengsha (Borax) Ruiren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen) (Remove shell and skin, keep flesh pure) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (Each one qian) Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum) (Five fen) Fengmi (Mel) (One liang)
Take Xiongdan, Niuhuang, Ruiren, Huanglian. Pour two large bowls of running water into a clay pot. Boil down to half a bowl. Filter through heavy cotton paper to remove residue. Add Fengmi. Boil again with mild and strong fire until purple-golden color. Lift with a thin thread as the standard. Do not over-boil or under-boil. Remove. Add Pengsha, Longnao. Grind to extremely fine powder. Mix evenly. Store in a sealed porcelain jar. Bury in earth for seven days to remove fire qi. Each time, use the tip of a stick to pick a little. Apply inside the eye. Close eyes for a moment. Wait for drug effect to pass before opening. Apply two or three times daily. Still avoid all wind-aggravating foods.
Zijin Dingzi (Treats eye diseases. Regardless of recent or old onset. Various nebulae. Blood flooding the pupil. Pterygium. Trichiasis. Chronic blindness. Acute redness and swelling. Scleral swelling. Gritty sensation difficult to open. Tightness and astringency. Photophobia. Excessive discharge and tearing. Ulcerated lid margins with wind-itch. Blurred vision. Tearing upon exposure to smoke. Sensation of fire in eyes. Various eye ailments.)
Luganshi (Water-washed) Huangdan (Lithargyri) (Each half jin) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Pengsha (Borax) (Each five qian) Chuanhuilian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (Each one liang) Baifan (Alumen) (Raw use)
Shacha (Processed) Baixiangding (Stercus Corvi) Qingfen (Calomel) Beichi (Concha Arcae) Shixie (Crab Shell) (Water-washed) Haipiaoxiao (Sepiae Endoconcha) Xiongdan (Ursi Bile) Ruxiang (Olibanum) Moyao (Myrrha) Baizhenzhu (Margarita) Shexiang (Moschus) (Each one qian two fen half) Meihuapian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (Two qian, its scent dissipates if kept too long, add after mixing other drugs)
Except for Shexiang. Process others separately into powder. Weigh and mix evenly. Add Huanglian water. Grind for thousands of strokes. Dry. Then add Shexiang. Grind fine and sieve. Then add Meihuapian. Grind and sieve again. Add the following paste. Knead into concretion. Dry in shade.
Zhuyanzi (Four pieces, wash off fat membrane with straw water until clean and oil-free. Wrap in cloth and pound into pulp for medicine) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (One jin) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (Each two liang) Hezi (Terminaliae Fructus) (Eight pieces) Ruiren (Pruni Armeniacae Semen) (Remove shell, five qian) Daeli (Pyrus Sinkiangensis Juice) (Eight pieces, extract juice) Dongmi (Winter Mel Honey) (Eight liang, boil separately until dry)
Wash and chop Huanglian and eight other herbs. Soak in water in a copper vessel. Spring/Summer three days, Autumn four days, Winter seven days. Filter residue. Add water and boil three times. Extract all medicinal power.
Filter repeatedly through dense silk and cotton paper. Clarify to remove sand and soil. Simmer over slow fire. Use forty-nine branches each of Huai and Liu. Stir alternately in one direction. Never stop stirring. Stir until the medicine resembles maltose. Mix with honey. Store in porcelain. Place on top of a water boiler. Steam-braise into ointment. Filter clean again. Drop into water. Should sink and form pearls. Ready for pill-making. Wait several days. Remove fire poison. Melt again. Mix with powders. Pound into pills/concretions. Dry in shade. Coat with gold/silver foil. Each time take a little. Dissolve in fresh well water. Dip duck feather and apply inside the eye.
Can also be dissolved in hot water for eye washing. If cold, re-warm. Wash five to six times daily. Apply two to three times daily. Great efficacy.
Yangdan Medicine Preparation Method
Luganshi is an essential eye medicine. Select light and white ones. Four liang. Use Su Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Jingjiesui (Perillae Folium), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma). Dispersing herbs, two qian each. Use clear river water. Snow water is better. Four large bowls. Boil down to two bowls. Remove residue. Crush Luganshi. Put into medicinal water. Boil in a bottle until dry. This is the Yin preparation using Yang herb decoction method. Also use Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Muzeicao (Equiseti Hiemalis Herba), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Liujinu (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qianliguang (Senecionis Scandentis Herba), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Shanzhiren (Gardeniae Fructus). Bitter-cold herbs, two qian each. Use well water five bowls. Soak two days in Spring/Summer, four days in Autumn/Winter. Stir often with hand. After soaking, remove residue. Divide medicinal water into clear and turbid portions. Put the boiled Luganshi into a Yangcheng jar. Heat red with strong fire. Remove with tongs for a moment. First quench with turbid water. Repeat quenching. Until water is exhausted. This is the Yang preparation using Yin herb soaking water method. Combine the residue from the previous Yin decoction and the Yin soaking residue. Soak in two bowls of water. Filter clean. Clarify again. Pour the refined Luganshi in. Grind and stir. Soak and expose overnight. Water-wash (Feifei). Sun-dry in light and heavy layers. Top layer is light. Bottom layer is heavy. Grind each to extreme fineness for storage. Light treats mild eye issues. Heavy treats severe eye issues. This is the combined preparation method for Yangdan. Generally, Luganshi processed by fire is inherently Yang. Using dispersing herbs for processing reflects "Pungent and Sweet disperse, which is Yang". Hence named Yangdan. Using Yin herbs for Yin processing reflects "Yang contains slight Yin". And it is the method for treating fire toxin.
Yindan Medicine Preparation Method
Tonglv (Chalcanthitum) (Boiled in Huanglian water, water-washed, dried in shade, one qian five fen) Qingyan (Natrii Chloridum) (Washed with white water) Ruxiang (Olibanum) (Each three fen) Pisha (Arsenicum) (Washed in Licorice water, six fen) Mituoseng (Lithargyri) (Water-washed, two fen) Moyao (Myrrha) (Three fen five li)
Take one liang of the previously prepared Yangdan Luganshi. Total seven ingredients. Grind all to extreme fineness. Do not let touch fire. Hence called Yin medicine. Using Yangdan Luganshi in the middle represents "Yin contains Yang". But only use Suzhou Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) purified, Chuanhuilian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) in equal parts. Soak in two zhan of water. Expose overnight. Remove residue. Filter to get one zhan of clear water. Add previous medicines. Mix evenly. Expose under the full moon overnight to obtain lunar Yin qi. Sun-dry the next day to obtain solar Yang qi. Wait until night dew and sun drying are thoroughly dry. Grind to extreme fineness. Add subsequent medicines. This is the method for preparing Yindan.
Chuanhuilian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (Remove skin/hairs, wash clean, dry, six fen three li) Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) (New white ones, six fen) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (Remove soil/leaves, five fen) Huhuanglian (Coptidis Chinensis Rhizoma) (Solid strips, wash clean, dry, four fen) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (Use Suzhou purified leaves, wash clean, sun-dry, three fen)
These five flavors are wind-dispersing and heat-clearing herbs. Taking imagery from the Five Wheels theory. Grind each to extreme fineness. Mix well. Form pills with human milk. Size of small beans. Store in silk bag. Hang in the northeast corner of the house to air-dry. Grind to extreme fineness again. Sieve. Mix with previous medicines. Add subsequent medicines.

Users must exercise discretion.
Combining Yin and Yang Methods
The previously prepared Yin and Yang Dans have no reason to be used alone. As the saying goes: "Solitary Yang does not generate. Solitary Yin does not grow." However, the combination methods have five names. Taking the meaning of Yin-Yang generating Five Elements. Listed below.
Medicines are ground in sequence. The two Dans are matched in sequence. Adding Fen, Sha, Fan flavors comes next. Meihuapian and Shexiang are added only when all other medicines are ground to extreme fineness. All eye medicine preparations follow this method. Fineness must be tested by tongue. Generally, women's eye medicine should be mixed clockwise. Men's counter-clockwise. Otherwise, treating eyes may cause reverse attack harm. Must understand this.

Key Points for Using Dan Heads
The previously combined Dans follow the meaning of Yin-Yang generating Five Elements. Regarding weight/lightness: Jindan is light. Mudan, Shuidan gradually become heavier. Acute red eyes. Recent nebulae. Can be酌情 (discretionarily) applied. As for Huodan and Tudan. They are potent and heavy. Old nebulae from years ago. Pterygium. Can only be treated with these. Can apply temporarily a few times. Cannot apply frequently. As said: "Evil light uses light [medicine]. Evil heavy uses heavy [medicine]." Must also assess the patient's eye constitution. Deduce by intent. Do not be rigid. Thus it says: "Divine and illuminating. Depends on the person." However, eye application should be done when full. Treating severe eyes relies on blowing [powder]. If nebula is on the eyeball, blowing must reach it. Blowing is more effective than dropping. For mild eyes, do not blow. After blowing/dropping. Wash with Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) and Cebaiye (Platycladi Cacumen) decoction, slightly warm. One: can disperse red vessels. Two: can wash away drug toxicity. Never use cold water. Avoid cold-cooling. When nearing cure. Do not over-apply. Leave some margin. Fear that over-application causes recurrence. Must understand this.
