Avoiding Noxious Qi
The foul odor of axillary bromhidrosis (fox stench). The turbid qi in the bedroom. The sweat qi from fatigue after long-distance walking. The turbid and evil qi from ditches and feces. The menstrual qi of women. The fishy and foul odor of various sores and ulcers. The smoke qi from burning sulfur. The smoke qi from extinguishing lamps and candles. The qi from accidentally burning hair. The qi from firewood smoke and burning fish bones. The qi from scallions, garlic, Chinese chives, and Welsh onion. The oil smoke qi from frying and stir-frying. The qi from drunkenness and consuming meat/fish. The dry and foul qi from musk.
Discussion on formulas to resolve external noxious qi. For those afflicted by filth from sexual intercourse, menstruation, or childbirth, resolve it with smoke from roasted jujubes.
For those disgusted by the five pungents (scallion, garlic, chive, leek, coriander), resolve it with smoke from roasted ginger.
For those affected by alcohol fumes, resolve it with smoke from Puerariae Radix (Ge Gen) and Artemisiae Scopariae Herba (Yin Chen Hao).
For those afflicted by the qi of corpses or epidemic pathogens, resolve it with smoke from Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Cang Zhu) and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang).
For those disturbed by fox stench or mutton/goat odors, resolve it by burning the fruit cones of Acer truncatum (Feng Qiu).
When encountering wind and rain, burn Cang Zhu and Feng Qiu to avoid noxious qi.
For all kinds of evil qi, generally fumigate with smoke from Resina Olibani (Ru Xiang). Zhang Zhongjing said: When children develop smallpox, it is appropriate to burn Ru Xiang to ward off various evil qi. This is because Ying and Wei qi flow freely when encountering fragrant qi but stagnate when encountering foul qi.
Secular people boil vinegar to fumigate smallpox, claiming it can invigorate blood. However, vinegar has astringent properties. Therefore, for women with metrorrhagia (blood flooding), fumigation with vinegar is used. But smallpox toxins desire to ascend and erupt, not to be astringed; thus, vinegar fumigation is unsuitable. I have seen many cases where vinegar fumigation led to complications.
Discussion on the use of this wine when macules and papules first appear. Spray it around the bed walls, and have both the patient and caregivers drink it to ward off filth and toxins. Additionally, apply clean rouge to the inner corners of the eyes to prevent toxin invasion into the eyes.
Hu Xu Wine
Take 3 liang of Hu Xu (Coriandrum sativum), finely chopped. Boil in 2 zhong of wine. Seal tightly with paper to prevent vapor loss. After cooling, remove dregs. Gently apply from the crown of the head down to the chin. Then spray the back, spine, chest, abdomen, and feet thoroughly. Spraying the room walls and doors is especially effective.
Discussion on treating smallpox that is about to emerge but has not yet fully erupted, with residual heat, excessive toxin load, and dense, confluent lesions. Urgently administer 3-4 doses of this formula to rapidly expel and detoxify, with miraculous efficacy.
Specifically treats: Internal accumulation of pathogenic heat, discomfort in the throat and diaphragm, phlegm-saliva congestion with cough, red eyes, facial swelling, lymphatic nodules in the cheeks and neck, generalized swelling and toxin aggregation, wind-rash, sore-toxin redness and swelling, etc.
Xiao Du San (Detoxification Powder)
Fructus Arctii (Niu Bang Zi) (lightly stir-fried, 4 qian) Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (deprived of radicle, each 1 qian). Alternative prescription: Add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 1 qian, Cornu Rhinocerotis (Xi Jiao) sliced 5 fen.
Crush the herbs, decoct in water, and take warm.
Discussion on treating smallpox that has already emerged with severe toxin load, using this formula for detoxification. It is also used if eruption is slow. Some say: When smallpox is about to emerge, accompanied by high fever and anorexia, one dose can resolve the condition internally. If one or two spots have emerged, half the toxicity is resolved. If fully erupted, they will scab on the same day. Three doses are sufficient for recovery. I often use this for robust children with severe smallpox toxins, showing remarkable efficacy. For deficient patients, Shen Gong San is particularly suitable.
Hua Du San (Toxin-Dissolving Powder)
Radix Lithospermi (Zi Cao Rong) (5 qian) Radix Bupleuri Chuan Sheng Ma (Chuan Sheng Ma) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 2.5 qian).
Crush the herbs. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct together with 50 grains of glutinous rice.
Discussion on severe toxin load after smallpox eruption, presenting as diffuse redness without clear boundaries, resembling mosquito bites or silkworm eggs, or associated with various hemorrhages, vomiting, or diarrhea. These symptoms can be treated within seven days of onset with this formula for miraculous detoxification.
Jiu Wei Shen Gong San (Nine-Ingredient Divine Merit Powder)
Radix Astragali (Huang Qi) Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Zi Cao (Lithospermi Radix) Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus) Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix) Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (1.5 qian). All in equal proportions except Gan Cao.
Crush the herbs, decoct in water. Decoct the dregs again for a second dose. For severe heat, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), 1 qian each. If heat persists, add Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). For convulsions/fright, add Chan Tui (Cicada Slough), removing head and feet. If pustules are pale black, indicating cold invasion, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 qian. For constipation, add Da Huang.
If thirst occurs during smallpox eruption, Shen Gong San should alleviate it. If thirst persists, decoct Hong Hua Zi (Carthami Semen) alone in water. If seeds are unavailable, Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) is acceptable. Adding Niu Bang Zi is especially good, as it disperses blood stasis in the stomach area. Do not use Lychee or Jujube, as they aggravate Yang channel fire and cause severe thirst. For severe thirst, use Zhen Huang Tu (True Yellow Earth) boiled in water, covered with a bowl. Take the water, add a little brown sugar, and drink to stop thirst immediately.
If smallpox lesions are depressed within three days of eruption, it is not a deficiency syndrome. Use Shen Gong San to invigorate blood and reduce fire.
If cold symptoms appear before the fourth day, with dark, grim lesions, use Bao Yuan Tang (Protect the Origin Decoction) plus Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
If lesions are white and dull, indicating cold invasion, use Shen Gong San plus Guan Gui.
For abdominal pain, caused by severe toxin, Shen Gong San is indicated.
For persistent facial redness and indistinct lesion boundaries, double the amount of Qian Hu in Shen Gong San.
For vomiting, caused by toxin exacerbating fire flaring upward, Shen Gong San is indicated.
For diarrhea, caused by excessive fire rushing downward, add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) or Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) to Shen Gong San to lift the clear yang.
If the body cools but sweating continues profusely, indicating blood overflowing with qi, use Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 5 qian, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) 3 qian, and Chao Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, stir-fried) 3 qian. Decoct as one dose and take to stop sweating immediately.
For phlegm, grind Bai Fu Zi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) and take. Do not use Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction), as it dries the Yangming channel, leaving solitary Yang without Yin, preventing transformation.
For cough, decoct Xing Ren (Pruni Semen) and mix with ground Bai Fu Zi to take, stopping cough immediately.
For generalized body pain, grind Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and take to stop pain.
During the pus-forming stage, itching indicates internal heat combined with external wind-cold. Wrap Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) tightly in paper, seal with rice paste. Burn over a lamp, then rub off the ash on a table. Quickly touch the specific itchy pustule once to relieve itching. Apply to each itchy spot for immediate relief.
During the pus-maturing stage, if a carbuncle develops despite full pus, identify it as a black carbuncle-pustule. If black and hard, with red threads or large purple blisters, and undetoxified, continue with Shen Gong San added with Xiong Huang (Realgar), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). Also apply topically: Mix 1 qian of powdered Xiong Huang with thick water-infused rouge, and apply to the carbuncle head. It turns red and lively immediately, a miraculous method. Xiong Huang detoxifies, and rouge invigorates blood.
If diarrhea occurs on days 9-10 of smallpox, first detoxify using Ding Zhong Tang (Stabilize Middle Decoction).
Take a large piece of true yellow earth, place in a bowl, pour boiling water over it, cover immediately. After a moment, remove. If cooled, pour into a cup, keep warm externally with hot water. Add 1 qian Xiong Huang (Realgar) and 5 fen Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), grind to fine powder, and mix well. Take 2 cups of the yellow earth water with a little brown sugar, warm, to stop diarrhea immediately.
For smallpox with abdominal distension and thirst, or diarrhea with thirst, or cold toes with thirst, or palpitations with fright and thirst, or warm body with thirst, or hot body with white lesions and thirst, or shivering with unceasing thirst, or rapid breathing/gritting teeth with thirst, or drinking water leading to increased thirst: These nine symptoms indicate non-heat syndromes. They result from deficiency of Spleen and Stomach muscles and depletion of fluids. Mu Xiang San (Aucklandia Powder) is indicated. If ineffective, add Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) and Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), decoct and take frequently. Ding Xiang attacks internally, Guan Gui releases the exterior. This strengthens both interior and exterior, preventing death from itching, collapsing, wheezing, and thirst.
On days 11-12, if scabbing is delayed with steaming fever, use Gan Lu Hui Tian Tang (Sweet Dew Restoring Heaven Decoction).
Take half a wine cup of brown sugar, dissolve in a large bowl of boiling water, and take warm. Fever subsides and scabs form immediately, with hundred percent efficacy, truly possessing life-restoring power.
