Regarding the discussion on infants contracting wind pathogens or cold: Use three to four stalks of old scallion, pound them until extremely fine, apply with hands, and rub evenly over the palms. Warm them up, then rub them all over the infant's body. Rub again several times over areas where qi flows freely. When the body becomes warm and sweats, recovery is immediate.
For treating infants with a cyanotic complexion, cold body, silence, and muteness: Use lamp-moxibustion (fire-light therapy) by pressing and bursting the flame at acupoints all over the body and extremities. The infant will awaken immediately.
Regarding the discussion on infant typhoid-cold (Shanghan): Symptoms include headache, high fever, aversion to cold, coughing, nasal congestion with heavy voice, impending eruption of smallpox/variolae, convulsions, wind-stroke, wheezing, coughing, and spasms of hands and feet. It is appropriate to administer Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Decoction for Overcoming Toxins).
Ingredients: Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bo He Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Preparation and Administration: Coarsely crush the herbs. Decoct with fresh ginger and scallion white, and take orally.
Regarding the discussion on infants suffering from external contraction of wind-cold and internal accumulation leading to wind-stroke: Symptoms include fever, rapid breathing, coughing with phlegm-saliva, tidal fever, spasms, and initial onset of rash/pox. It is appropriate to administer Qiang Huo Gao (Notopterygium Ointment/Paste).
Ingredients: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) (each 5 qian); Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) (each 3 qian); Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like seeds of Euryale ferox (Qian Shi). Take one pill per dose, grinding it down with ginger decoction for administration.
Regarding the discussion on infants' common cold in all seasons, wind-stroke, and plague: Symptoms include fever, drowsiness, coarse breathing with wheezing and chest fullness, excessive phlegm causing cough, convulsive wind-tidal spasms, gu-poison, heatstroke, and rashes/pox about to erupt accompanied by spasms. These conditions can be treated with this formula. For robust infants, taking one pill every three to five days can prevent diseases such as convulsive wind and phlegmatic wheezing. It is appropriate to administer Bao Long Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill).
Ingredients: Nan Xing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), processed by grinding into powder, placing inside the membrane of a yellow ox gallbladder, drying in shade for one hundred days, then removing (8 qian); Tian Zhu Huang (Calami Tuberum? Note: Usually refers to Bambusae Tabulae); Xiong Huang (Realgar); Chen Sha (Cinnabaris) (ground separately, each 4 qian); She Xiang (Moschus) (1 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Form pills using boiled licorice paste, sized like seeds of Gleditsia sinensis (Zao Jiao Zi). Take one pill per dose, grinding it down with mint decoction for administration. If the infant is under one year old, divide into three doses. Alternatively, use snow water or licorice paste juice to mix with the medicine, which is even better.
Commentary: The above formulas are suitable if the condition involves wind-heat causing phlegmatic cough, or acute wind-stroke with spasms, drowsiness, and teeth-grinding, where both the physical constitution and pathology are excess-type. If it is an initial contraction of wind-cold with abundant cough-phlegm and asthma, it belongs to exogenous pathogens acting internally. First, use Shi Yi Wei Shen Su Yin (Eleven-Ingredient Ginseng and Perilla Decoction). If the pathogen is resolved but abdominal distension, vomiting, and diarrhea occur, or if spasms, teeth-grinding, and sleeping with eyes half-open (exposing pupils) appear, it indicates deficiency of spleen and lung qi. Use Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), named Yi Gong San (Extraordinary Merit Powder). Strictly avoid expectorant and exterior-releasing dispersants. If the aforementioned symptoms were caused by excessive use of attacking/draining medicines, warming and tonifying the spleen and lung is especially appropriate.
