One discussion on Wood Tongue (a condition characterized by a swollen, stiff tongue with limited mobility). This is caused by Excess Fire in the Spleen Meridian.

One discussion on children's tongue slightly protruding and immediately retracting is called Playing Tongue (a condition characterized by intermittent protrusion and retraction of the tongue). This belongs to Deficiency and Damage of the Heart and Spleen. Use Bupi San (Tonify the Spleen Powder) to tonify it. If the tongue extends long and retracts slowly, it is called Relaxed Tongue (a condition characterized by prolonged protrusion of the tongue). This is due to Accumulated Heat in the Heart and Spleen. Use a small amount of the aforementioned Xiehuang San as the main formula. If accompanied by sores in the mouth and tongue, thirst, and desire to drink cold liquids, this is Excess Heat in the Stomach Meridian. Use Xiehuang San. If there is thirst but aversion to cold, this belongs to Deficient Heat in the Spleen Meridian. Use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction). If there is poor appetite, thirst, or loose stools, this is Spleen and Stomach Weakness. Use Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) from the Vomiting and Diarrhea section. If symptoms worsen in the afternoon, this is Spleen Blood Deficiency. Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added powder of Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), and Fu Ling (Poria). It is appropriate to apply Bushen Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) from the Internal Injury section. If a serious illness has not yet resolved and Playing Tongue appears, the prognosis is ominous.
Playing Tongue slightly protrudes and immediately retracts. Acquired after illness, it is hardest to cure. Extending long and retracting slowly is named Relaxed Tongue. Heat in the Heart and Spleen need not cause worry.
