The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The Qi of the Spleen opens into the mouth. It also states: The flourishing aspect of the Spleen manifests in the lips. Generally speaking, dryness causes dryness; heat causes fissures; wind causes swelling; cold causes scaling and peeling. If the lips swell and develop white skin scales, with wrinkles and cracks resembling a silkworm cocoon, this condition is named "Cocoon Lip" (Jian Chun). Some patients present with lip swelling that overlaps like a cocoon; others have a base that is thin and an end that is large, resembling a cocoon or a tumor. This may be due to emotional disturbances (Seven Emotions) generating internal fire that damages blood, or heart fire transmitting to the Spleen meridian, or accumulation of heat from rich and greasy foods damaging the Spleen. The general principle of treatment is to examine the root cause, observe accompanying symptoms, tonify Spleen Qi, and generate Spleen Blood. Then, dryness will naturally become moist, fire will naturally be eliminated, wind will naturally subside, and swelling will naturally disappear. If the patient neglects it, or if the practitioner fails to examine it properly and recklessly uses drugs for clearing heat and detoxifying, or uses medicinal threads to peel off the skin, it may instead result in a malignant ulceration such as "Fan Hua" (flower-turning sore).
