Whenever the facial complexion is dark and gloomy, or the gaze is deviant as if in lust. Whenever the pulse is suddenly large or small, floating or sunken, long or short, present or absent, or chaotic and irregular. Or the pulse arrives suddenly and rapidly, or is deep and hidden, or presents as a double string-like pulse, or rapid like a hook pecking, or rolling and circulating, or obstructed transversely, or hurried and scattered, or the Chi (cun) position is larger than the Cun-Guan positions, or the Guan position is larger than the Cun-Chi positions. All these are caused by infection with evil influences (Sui). Rapid and hook-pecking pulses are mostly seen in Spleen disorders; rolling and abundant pulses are mostly seen in Liver disorders; obstructed and scattered pulses are mostly seen in Heart pulses. Generally speaking, Sui pulses manifest as deficient and scattered Heart pulses and vigorous Liver pulses, which can be verified especially by this. Because the Heart stores the Shen (Spirit), and the Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul), when Heart Qi is deficient, it leads to fright, coma, and the Shen failing to reside in its house, allowing the Shen-Qi of the evil influence to enter the Hun.
One treatment for Ke Wu sudden death:
Huanhun Decoction (Return the Soul Decoction)
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, 麻黄) (3 liang, remove joints)
Prunus Armeniaca Semen (Xingren, 杏仁) (70 seeds, remove skin and tips)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 liang)
Chop the above ingredients. Add two bowls of water, decoct until one bowl remains. Remove the dregs and administer orally. This treats all cases of sudden death generally.
The Five Extinctions (Wu Jue). The first is hanging (self-strangulation), the second is being crushed by a wall, the third is drowning, the fourth is nightmare/supernatural oppression (Yan Mei), the fifth is freezing to death.
For all five types of extinction, grind Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏) into powder, make pills with cold water the size of a bean, insert into the nostrils to cure. If the heart area is still warm, it can be treated within one day.
Also treat sudden death: take Banxia powder the size of a bean, blow into the nostrils.
Bian Que treated postpartum fainting and suffocation: grind Banxia into powder, make pills with cold water the size of a bean, insert into the nostrils to immediately recover consciousness.
One method to rescue those who have been hanged. For those hanging high, slowly embrace them and untie the rope; do not cut the rope from top or bottom. Place them on bedding and lay them down gently, slightly adjusting the throat.
One person steps on the patient's shoulders with their feet, holds the hair at the crown of the head with their hands, keeping it taut, not letting it slacken. Another person rubs the chest and abdomen, flexes and extends the limbs. If the body is already stiff, gradually move it forcibly, preventing gas leakage. Also blow air into both ears using a bamboo tube, waiting for breath to exit the mouth. If breathing resumes but eyes remain closed, and traction/pressing fails to wake them, after a moment administer Xiao Jiang Tang (Small Ginger Decoction) or clear porridge gruel to moisten the throat, stopping only when the body can move slightly. This method works even if the body is cold from morning to evening; from evening to morning, when Yin Qi is dominant, it is difficult to save. If the lower abdomen remains slightly warm, even if more than a day has passed, recovery is possible. This method is hundred percent effective. Another method is to blow Banxia powder into the nostrils.
One treatment for severe self-strangulation where Qi has escaped: moxa only Yongquan (KI-1, Sole of the Foot). For males, the left side; for females, the right side. Moxa three Zhu (moxa cones) on the foot to revive.
Another method: use a male rooster for males, a female hen for females. Pierce the comb to draw blood, drip into the mouth to revive immediately.
One method to rescue drowning victims. First, pry open the victim's mouth with a knife, place a chopstick horizontally between the teeth to allow water drainage. Have a strong man bend the victim's legs over his shoulders, back-to-back, carrying them while walking to expel water. Then, take dry earth or wall soil, spread it on the ground, and lay the victim supine upon it. Cover the body with soil, exposing only the mouth and eyes, so that natural water vapor is absorbed into the earth, and the person will revive. Immediately use a bamboo tube to blow air alternately into the mouth, ears, nose, umbilicus, and anus, connecting the upper and lower Qi mechanisms. Also, instill Banxia powder into the nose to induce sneezing. Wrap Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, 皂角) powder in cotton and plug the anus. After a moment, water will flow out, and the person will revive. Another prescription: moxibustion on Zhongwan (CV-12, Center of the Abdomen/Umbilicus) revives immediately.
One case of freezing to death or falling into water in winter with faint breath. Remove wet clothes, then wrap the victim in warm clothes from a living person for warmth. Heat rice, put it in a bag, and apply heat compress to the heart area.
Replace when cold. Roasted stove ash can also be used. Wait until the body warms up, eyes open, and Qi returns. Then administer warm wine or ginger porridge/gruel. If moxibustion with fire is applied first, death is certain. One prescription uses Xionghuang (Realgar, 雄黄) and Yanxiao (Saltpeter/Niter, 焰硝) in equal parts, ground into powder, applied to the corners of both eyes.
One case of crushing death or fall injury: if the heart area is still warm, urgently help the patient sit up, pull the hair with hand, blow Banxia powder into the nostrils for slight revival. Mix fresh Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi, 生姜汁) with Sesame Oil (Xiangyou, 香油) evenly and administer orally. Subsequently take herbal medicine. If no medicine is available, administer human urine. One prescription: decoct seven cun of peach branches and willow branches from the east side, and administer the soup.
One case of Zhong E Yan Si (death from evil influence/nightmare): do not approach and call out loudly. Instead, spit on the face. If not waking, bite the heel and the big toe, slightly move the sleeping position, and call out gently. Wait for slight revival, then blow Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, 皂角) powder into the nose to induce sneezing. Alternatively, pour Leijiu (Chinese Chive Juice, 韭汁) into the nostrils.
