The Immortal said: Ancient divine physicians were able to treat the mind (spirit and psychology) of people, preventing them from falling ill in advance. Modern physicians only know how to treat physical diseases but fail to treat the mind; this is akin to abandoning the root while pursuing the branches. If one does not investigate the source of the disease but merely attacks its manifestations, how can one expect a cure? It is unknown that diseases arise from the mind, and misdeeds are created by oneself. The Buddhist teaching states that all things are created by the mind, which is indeed true. Therefore, when the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pondering, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) arise internally, causing a distortion of one's true nature, leading to severe illness, it is truly beyond the scope of medicinal treatment. Generally, medicines can treat the physical body governed by the interactions of the Five Elements, but cannot treat the formless Seven Emotions; they can treat the Qi and Blood damaged by emotional distress, but cannot treat the unpredictable fluctuations of emotions that arise and vanish without cause. Thus, the Immortal also said: Physicians should not enter the homes of judicial officers, and medicines should not treat the illnesses of the unrighteous. Fortune has its master, and disaster has its administrator; the mechanism of karmic retribution is infallible. Consequently, there are illnesses of "Heavenly Punishment" and illnesses of "Self-Mutilation." The so-called "illnesses of Heavenly Punishment" result from accumulated transgressions in past and present lives, where Heaven and Earth inflict these ailments as retribution; this sin originates from the mind. The so-called "illnesses of Self-Mutilation" are caused by exposure to Wind, Cold, Summer-heat, and Dampness, and damage from alcohol, sexual indulgence, temperament, and anger; with Six Desires and Seven Emotions arising internally, and Yin and Yang Qi attacking externally; such diseases also originate from the mind. The *Immortal's Classic* states: Refine Jing (Essence) to transform into Qi, refine Qi to transform into Shen (Spirit), refine Shen to return to Void.
Alas! From where shall one refine? It ultimately lies within the mind. Therefore, excessive thinking damages the Heart, sorrow and grief damage the Lungs, anger damages the Liver, improper diet damages the Spleen, and excessive lust damages the Kidneys. Medicines can treat only half of the condition; the other half relies entirely not on medicinal power but on "Mind Medicine." One might ask: What is Mind Medicine? Citing the poem by Lin Jiantang: "One knows one's own heart disease best; when thoughts arise, one should use thoughts to heal them. Since the mind generates the mind-made illness, if the mind is at peace, how can illness come?" This is called Mind Medicine. Using Mind Medicine to treat diseases arising from internal emotional disturbances is what is meant by "treating the mind." I have examined the prosperity of medical texts through the dynasties, which are numerous enough to fill carts and oxen, detailed and clear, with their core principle being the prevention of disease. However, the *Huangdi Neijing* (*Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon*) summarizes this in one sentence: "Do not treat the already sick, but treat those who are not yet sick." Treating existing illness is inferior to treating before illness occurs; healing the body is inferior to healing the mind. I believe that having others treat you is less effective than self-treatment first.
