Pediatric patients presenting with intermittent tinnitus or pain in the ear are suffering from wind-pathogen invading the ear, interfering with healthy qi. When this pathogenic factor clashes with blood and qi, it results in tinnitus; when it clashes with the meridians and collaterals, it results in pain.
Treatment for ear pain: Pulverize dried lily bulb (Baihe) into powder, mix with warm water to administer one qian orally after breastfeeding. Alternatively, collect feces of insects found on willow trees, dissolve them in water to extract juice, mix with a small amount of alum powder (Bai Fan), and drip into the ear for optimal effect.
Alternatively, heat two to three sheng of salt, wrap it in cloth, and use it as a pillow for the affected ear. Replace immediately when cool. This method also treats roaring sounds resembling flowing water.
Treatment for tinnitus sounding like flowing water or wind: Take fresh Aconitum carmichaelii root (Sheng Wutou) just broken off. While still moist, carve it into the shape of a jujube pit and insert it into the ear. Change morning to night, and night to morning. Recovery occurs within three days. This method also treats ear pruritus. If fresh Wutou is unavailable, dried Wutou may be used.
Treatment for chronic ear tinnitus: Insert cut fresh Rehmannia glutinosa root (Sheng Dihuang) into the affected ear, replacing frequently. Alternatively, wrap in paper and gently roast before use.
Pediatric patients presenting with swelling in the ear, or sores discharging pus, are caused by the combination of wind-dampness invading the ear, where pathogenic factors interfere with healthy qi, clash with blood and qi, and damage the meridians. Mild cases present as swelling; severe cases develop sores. If body fluids coagulate and ulcerate, they transform into pus and blood discharge. Additionally, if water or tears enter the ear and stagnate, interfering with healthy qi, pus may also form. These conditions are collectively termed "Ting Er" (Stagnant Ear) or "Nong Er" (Pus Ear).
