Pediatric carbuncle (Dan Du) is a condition caused by wind-heat pathogenic factors invading the Couli (skin texture and pores), clashing with blood and Qi, and manifesting on the skin. Additionally, the "Yellow Carbuncle" and "Malignant Toxin" in pediatric cases discussed in *Qianjin Fang* are all formed by the accumulation of heat.
Some infants contract carbuncle due to warming clothes near fire sources in winter, covering themselves too warmly at night, or because their nursing mothers consume roasted foods and alcohol. The affected area feels hot as if on fire; even slight touch causes unbearable pain.
There is also the Five-Color Carbuncle. Although the red type is most common, all types cause pain due to heat. Severe cases present with high fever throughout the body, irritability, thirst, and mental confusion. There are also various "Fire Carbuncles" with numerous names and symptoms that cannot be fully listed; they are all different names for the Red Carbuncle. If the toxin enters the abdomen, it can be fatal, so prompt treatment is required.
Treatment for Red Carbuncle: This is caused by heat-toxin, presenting with pure red color resembling cinnabar paste, hence named Red Carbuncle. Apply a paste made of buckwheat flour mixed with vinegar. Alternatively, mix buckwheat flour with borneol (Jiu Nao) to form cakes, hang them on strings to dry, grind into powder when needed, mix with egg white to form a paste, and apply using a feather brush. The effect is miraculous.
Another prescription: Apply juice from Coriander (Hu Sui). Or, mix half tael of Halloysitum Rubrum (Han Shui Shi) and one part of Kaolin (Bai Tu), grind into fine powder, and apply with rice vinegar. Alternatively, use Indigofera tinctoria (Lan Dian), Houttuynia cordata (Shen Huo Cao), moss, Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang), or Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi Ren); taking any one of these, grinding into powder, and applying with water is effective.
Treatment for White Carbuncle: Presents with flaccid swelling like being blown up, caused by fire, wind, and heat pathogens, with wind predominating, resulting in a white color. Stir-fry Fermented Soybean Paste (Xiang Chi) until yellow, combine with equal weight of Longjiang Earth (Fu Long Gan), grind into fine powder. Apply half a qian mixed with raw sesame oil.
Treatment for Black Carbuncle: Presents with painful swelling. Originally caused by heat-toxin, complicated by cold pathogen invasion, leading to mutual stasis and suppression, resulting in black color.
Herbs: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Sheng Ma), Mirabilite (Chuan Mang Xiao), Euphorbiae Fissilobae Radix (Lou Lu, remove root ends, 2 taels each), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi Ren, 1 tael each).
Grind herbs into coarse powder. Use two spoons per dose, add three cups of water, decoct to two cups, strain. Soak soft cloth in the warm liquid and compress the affected area until swelling subsides.
Treatment for Carbuncle with variable colors: Caused by wind-toxin clashing with cold and heat pathogens, with varying degrees of excess and deficiency, leading to indeterminate colors.
Herbs: Ziziphus jujuba root bark (Zao Mu Gen, 4 taels), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Dan Shen, remove root ends, 3 taels), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ju Hua, cleaned, 2 taels).
Cut finely and mix evenly. Use two spoons per dose, add two bowls of water, boil several times. Wash the affected area in a draft-free place while warm.
Another prescription: Treat as above, but apply dried Ginger (Gan Jiang) mixed with honey.
Treatment for Acute Carbuncle spreading upward: Apply Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou) powder mixed with egg white.
Treatment for Red Carbuncle: Gently rub the broken skin with vines of Pueraria lobata (Ge Le Teng), then apply juice of Terminalia chebula (He Li Le) ground with vinegar. Effect is excellent. Alternatively, drink one he of clarified quenching water from iron forging troughs.
Treatment for Black Carbuncle: Originally heat-toxin clashing with blood and Qi, with mild heat and predominant wind, resulting in black color. Mix two taels of calcined alum (Feng Hua Duan Shi) with three taels of ash from thatch grass collected from four corners of a house, grind into fine powder, apply mixed with egg white, 3-5 times daily. Effective. Alternatively, apply mud from under pig troughs.
Treatment for White Carbuncle: Originally heat-toxin clashing with blood and Qi, with mild heat and predominant wind, resulting in white color. Apply ash from burned pig manure mixed with egg white.
Treatment for Yang Huo Carbuncle: Occurs on both flanks, axillae, and neck. Grind Glauber's Salt (Chuan Pu Xiao) finely, take half a qian mixed with Bamboo Sap (Zhu Li), adjust dosage according to age.
Treatment for Tian Zao Fire Carbuncle: Occurs between the sacrum and coccyx, bright red, flowing to the glans penis causing swelling, or bleeding. Boil one sheng of Silkworm Frass (Can Sha) in water, strain, and wash with the juice.
Treatment for Fei Zao Fire Carbuncle: Occurs on the dorsum of the foot, red in color. Mix one tael of Adzuki Bean powder with two taels of horn ash, grind uniformly, apply mixed with egg white.
Treatment for Niao Zao Fire Carbuncle: Occurs on knees and thighs, starting from the umbilicus, spreading to abdomen and head. Apply ash from thatch grass from four corners of a house mixed with egg white.
Treatment for Flame Carbuncle: Occurs on both sides of the back and knees, feeling like burning. Apply leaves of Old Ya Yan Jing Grass ground with vinegar. Also treats red swelling.
Treatment for Five-Color Carbuncle: High fever throughout the body like burning. If it encircles the umbilicus, it is life-threatening. Apply mashed leaves of Akebia quinata (Shuo Dao) mixed with water.
Treatment for Carbuncle starting from the umbilicus: Apply powder of Longjiang Earth (Fu Long Gan) mixed with rainwater dripping from eaves (Wu Lou Shui). Reapply when dry until effective. If unavailable, fresh well water can be used.
Treatment for Carbuncle swelling on flanks, heart region, and back: If not treated promptly, it can be fatal. Decoct eight taels of Antelope Horn (Ling Yang Jiao) in five sheng of water until reduced to one sheng, filter through silk cloth. Mix with five taels of refined lard, apply evenly.
Treatment for Carbuncle suddenly appearing on the head: Skin is red, swollen, with blisters and broken sores. Initially coin-sized, gradually expanding over the body up to one or two chi, eventually covering the whole body, entering mouth and ears, reaching viscera. If the stomach rots, death ensues. This progression is slow but requires urgent treatment.
Crack one tael of Licorice Root (Gan Cao), add one large cup of water, decoct until warm. Have the nursing mother hold the decoction in her mouth, swish, and spit out to wash the lesion, gently rubbing with palm. Avoid breaking the skin. Continue administering Licorice decoction orally. Three applications result in cure.
Treatment for Carbuncle: Finely chop five he of Crucian Carp meat (Ji Yu Rou), mix with three he of crushed Adzuki Beans, pound into paste, apply mixed with water.

Grind five peeled Ricinus Communis seeds (Bi Ma Zi) with skin into fine powder, add one spoon of flour, apply mixed with water. Wash with boiled Rhamnus root.
