The infant sleeps drowsily, breathes hot air from the mouth, yawns frequently, and appears listless. It is necessary to apply a dispersing method (releasing the exterior) using Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste). If the exterior pathogen is not resolved and signs of interior excess (such as constipation) appear, a purgative method should be applied, primarily using Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill).
If the infant drinks excessive amounts of water yet has an increased appetite, a mild purgation may be considered. In other cases, purgation should not be used.
If it is due to Spleen Qi deficiency (weakness of the Spleen organ), the Spleen should first be harmonized, followed by dispersing the exterior. Harmonizing the Spleen is treated with Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder); dispersing the exterior is primarily treated with Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste).
If it is due to Spleen deficiency and timidity, the Spleen should be tonified using Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder); if exterior dispersion is needed, Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste) is primarily used. If the condition does not improve, Tiaozhong Wan (Middle Regulating Pill) is used. If there are signs of interior excess, Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill) is used for purgation. After purgation, Wenjing Wan (Warming Calming Pill) is administered.
If it is due to Spleen deficiency, the Spleen must be tonified. Dispersing the exterior should only be done after panting has ceased, and the Spleen should continue to be tonified afterward. For abdominal distension, Taqi Wan (Qi Collapsing Pill) is used to reduce bloating; for dispersing the exterior, Daqing Gao (Great Blue Paste) is primarily used.
If the pathogen involves the Heart, palpitations and fright occur.
If the pathogen involves the Lung, chest stuffiness and confusion, panting, noisy breathing, sighing, and coughing occur.
If the pathogen involves the Kidney, photophobia occurs.
Each affected organ should be treated according to the principle of "tonifying the mother when deficient," as these symptoms arise from organ deficiency.
Excessive use of purgatives leads to empty heat in the Stomach and inability to transform ingested water. The fluids of the Stomach should be generated by administering Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) frequently.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) syndrome, male infants present with heavy body weight and sallow complexion; female infants present with red face, rapid panting, and aversion to cold. Both genders exhibit hot breath, yawning, listlessness, and neck stiffness. In Chuangzhen (exanthematous diseases such as smallpox or measles), symptoms include swollen cheeks, frequent sneezing, palpitations, drowsiness, and cold limbs. Shanghan should be treated with dispersing methods. Treatment for Chuangzhen focuses on gentle and balanced actions; if high fever is present, detoxification is required. See previous discussions for other details.
Lack of desire for milk and food, with undigested milk/food or white stool in feces, indicates Shangshi (Food Injury/Stagnation). Purgation should be applied first, followed by harmonizing the Stomach. Bai Bing Zi (White Cake Pill) is used for purgation; Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder) is primarily used for harmonizing the Stomach.
Lack of desire for milk and food, with greenish-white stool and undigested milk/food, indicates Upper Excess and Lower Deficiency. There are also accompanying syndromes:
Lung symptoms: Sleeping with eyes open (exposed eyeballs) and panting.
Heart symptoms: Frightened palpitations and thirst.
Spleen symptoms: Fatigue and excessive sleepiness.
Liver symptoms: Yawning and listlessness.
Kidney symptoms: Mutism and photophobia.
Purgation should be applied based on the involved organs, but tonifying the Spleen is prioritized, primarily using Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder). These are the two syndromes mentioned. Such illnesses commonly occur in autumn and summer.
Upon birth, if oral secretions are not thoroughly wiped away and swallowed into the throat, vomiting occurs. Mugua Wan (Papaya Pill) is primarily used. For all newborns, it is urgent to thoroughly clean the mouth immediately. If the infant cries and swallows secretions, various diseases may arise.
