Since ancient times, life and death have their fixed destiny. In ancient times, women gave birth by sitting directly on grass mats, a scene akin to facing death. Successfully delivering the child was called "Mian Nan" (escaping disaster). Relatives would bring pork liver to congratulate, using it for nourishment because the body is extremely weak within five days postpartum, not merely to celebrate the birth of the infant.
During the month following childbirth, due to the delivery process involving exposure to filth and uncleaned lochia, one should not step out of the house or windows, nor go to wells or stoves, nor worship deities or perform sacrifices. "Ying Yue" (full moon/month) does not strictly mean thirty days, but rather crossing into a new lunar month. For example, giving birth in the first month and entering the second then third month constitutes "crossing months."
During childbirth, bones and joints separate and loosen, causing the pelvis to open so the fetus can be delivered. It takes one hundred days for the body to fully recover to its pre-pregnancy state. Women often do not realize this; believing they are recovered once a month has passed, they engage in sexual intercourse to harmonize Yin and Yang. This damages the hundred vessels, leading to illnesses of "Wu Lao Qi Shang" (Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries).
For treating postpartum lack of milk secretion, Xia Ru San (Breast Milk Dispersing Powder) is most effective.
Zhu Ru Shi (Calcitrum, 钟乳) [5 fen], Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla, 通草) [5 fen], Lou Lu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix, 漏芦) [2 fen], Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 桂心) [2 fen], Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus, 栝楼) [1 fen], Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [1 fen].
The above six herbs are crushed and sifted. Take one Fang Cun Bi (a traditional measuring spoon) with warm water, three times daily.
Another prescription:
Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) 3 liang, boiled in 3 sheng of water until boiling three times. Drink all within one day. This is effective and can make postpartum emaciated women become plump and healthy.
Yang Zhi (Porcine Adiposum, 羊脂) 2 jin, Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Jucii Radix Juice, 生地黄汁) 1 dou, Jiang Zhi (Zingiberis Recensis Juice, 姜汁) 5 sheng, Bai Mi (Mel, 白蜜) 3 sheng.
Boil until resembling maltose syrup. Take one cup with warm wine, three times daily.
Prescription for postpartum continuous bleeding (Lou Xue):
Feng Fang (Apis Nests, 蜂房), Gu KT (Note: Textual error or specific term, retained as is), Chuan Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, 船竹茹 - likely a variant/error for Bamboo Sheath).
The above two items (assuming Feng Fang and another), equal parts, burned to ash. Take one Fang Cun Bi with dairy whey or sour juice, three times daily.
Prescription for postpartum urinary incontinence:
Take chicken eggs, burn them to ash, take with wine, three times daily.
Prescription for postpartum enuresis (involuntary urination without awareness):
Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix, 白薇), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 芍药) [each 1 fen].
The above two herbs are crushed into powder. Take one Fang Cun Bi with wine, three times daily.
Another prescription for postpartum enuresis:
Take grass from swallow nests, burn to ash. Take half Qian Bi (a small measuring spoon) with water or wine. This also treats men.
Another prescription:
Take Fan Shi (Alumen, 矾石) and Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, 牡蛎) in equal parts, sift finely. Take one Fang Cun Bi with wine, three times daily.
Prescription for postpartum frequent urination:
Take old clothes and white bookworms (Yi Yu, 衣鱼) from books, 30 pieces. Crush into powder, wrap in cotton, and insert into the vagina. Effective.
Prescription for postpartum uterine prolapse (Yin Tuo):
Apply Tie Jing (Ferrum, 铁精) to the affected area. Heat a cloth with fire, apply heat compress to the anus, and gradually push the prolapsed part back inside.
Another prescription:
Use Bie Xue (Trionycis Sanguis, 鳖血). Heat the ground, let the blood adhere to it, and have the patient sit on it. Effective.
Prescription for postpartum wind-cold invasion causing severe swelling and distress:
Take soil from mouse holes, 4 sheng. Roast until hot, store in a bag, place on the abdomen and around the genitalia to allow heat to enter the abdomen. Effective.
Da Dou Zi Tang (Black Soybean Decoction) primarily treats postpartum wind-stroke with critical condition, such as back stiffness and lockjaw, or merely irritability, fever, severe thirst, heaviness of head and body, itching, or in severe cases, vomiting, regurgitation, and staring fixedly. These are caused by wind, cold, and dampness.
Da Dou (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 大豆) 3 sheng, stir-fried until popping. Pre-prepare a vessel with 5 sheng of clear wine. Pour hot wine over the beans. Strain out the beans and drink all the remaining liquid. Cover warmly to induce slight sweating. Recovery occurs when the body is just moist. This formula expels wind and dissipates blood stasis. Example: Wife of Zhou Decheng touched something during pregnancy, suffered injury/fracture, fetus died in uterus for three days, critical condition. After taking this wine, she recovered. Subsequent treatments were also successful.
Prescription for postpartum cold invasion causing wind-spasm, whole-body coldness, lockjaw, and unconsciousness:
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) 4 liang, Jiu (Wine, 酒) 3 sheng. Boil to obtain 1 sheng. Remove dregs and take at once. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, etc.
For postpartum wind-stroke in deficient patients who cannot take other medicines, use Du Huo Tang (Angelicae Pubescentis Decoction) alone, or Bai Xian Tang (Dictamni Decoction) alone, or a combined decoction of Du Huo.
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 独活) 3 liang, boiled in 3 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng. Divide into doses. If tolerant of alcohol, boil with equal parts water and wine. Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex, 白藓皮) follows the same method.
Prescription for postpartum wind-deficiency:
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 独活) and Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex, 白藓皮) each 3 liang. Boil in 3 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng (Note: Textual anomaly, likely meant reduce volume). Divide into three doses. If tolerant of alcohol, add wine and boil together.
Prescription for postpartum wind-stroke with slurred speech and limb rigidity:
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 羌活) 3 liang, crush into powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Boil with half cup water and half cup wine, remove dregs, take warm.
Prescription for sudden postpartum spasm, lockjaw, cyanotic face, and rigid limbs:
Administer 1 sheng of Zhu Li (Bambusae Sap, 竹沥) to restore consciousness. Especially good for wind-stroke.
Prescription for postpartum soft-wind invasion causing whole-body pain and spontaneous sweating, as well as other diseases:
Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 独活) 8 liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) 4 liang.
Chop the above two herbs. Boil in 8 sheng of wine to obtain 4 sheng. Remove dregs. Divide into four doses. Take three times daily and once at night, aiming for slight sweating. If there is rebellious Qi, add Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 桂心) 2 liang. If not cured, prepare again.
