Dan Shen Gao (Salvia Root Ointment) is a formula for treating diseases caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage), epidemic pathogens, and malicious winds/evil qi.
When the pathogen is on the exterior, it causes numbness and pain in the limbs and joints, and obstruction of the throat and pharynx; when cold enters the abdomen, it causes anxiety, abdominal distension and fullness, and stifling sensation in the chest and hypochondrium. It can be taken internally or applied externally with massage. It is also indicated for flaccid paralysis and loss of motor control, bi-syndrome due to wind-dampness causing numbness and insensitivity, hemiplegia and contracture, deviation of the mouth and eyes, deafness, toothache, wind-bi swelling and pain of the head, stroke-induced convulsions and pain, as well as hard swellings that have not yet ulcerated, such as carbuncles, scrofula, fistulas, and lymphadenopathy; external application can resolve these masses. It is also used for erysipelas and other non-suppurative swellings suspected to be bone abscesses; massage can eliminate them. For malignant scrofula wandering throughout the body, and edema due to wind-water, massage is also employed. The internal dose is a pill the size of a jujube pit; pediatric doses should be reduced according to circumstances. Taken five times daily, repeated use yields efficacy.
Ingredients: Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), Shuodie (Foliage of Dendranthemi Indici), each 3 liang; Mangcao Ye (Folium Isatidis), Zhi Zhu Hua (Flos Rhododendri Mollis), each 1 liang; Qin Jiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Wu Tou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Chuanjiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), each 2 liang.
These twelve herbs are decocted with 5 sheng of Kujiu (vinegar) and 7 sheng of Sesame Oil until the vinegar is exhausted. Strain the dregs and process as described above; pig lard may also be used for decoction. If the condition is due to wind-cold and cold-toxin, take with wine. If it is a heat-toxin disease, take alone. For toothache, take alone and chew the cotton-wrapped residue; this is more effective than standard lard-decocted medicines. For children with post-auricular scrofula that is hard as bone and persists for months, apply the ointment wrapped in silk; it resolves completely in twenty days with miraculous effect.
