Formula for treating Jie disease (a type of skin condition characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain, leading to suppuration).
It is suitable to take Loulu Tang (Coptis Decoction) to promote purgation. Externally, use a sharp needle multiple times to bleed qi and blood, apply acupuncture with draining method at the site of nodules, and apply a small bean poultice to resolve it. All can be resolved according to the methods for treating Dan toxin (erysipelas-like conditions). One may also use the Sanwu Ganjiao Poultice used for treating Yong abscesses. Once it ulcerates and forms pus, use fire needles and apply ointment powders, following the same methods as for treating abscesses.
The *Classic* states: When cold pathogen invades the meridians, blood and qi become stagnant and sluggish, obstructing flow; accumulation leads to the formation of Yong abscesses or Ju sores. It does not state that they are caused by heat. After an abscess has existed for a long time, cold transforms into heat; excessive heat causes flesh to rot and turn into pus. According to diagnostic principles from the classics, this occurs because there is internal heat in the body that is constrained by cold, causing blood vessels to stagnate and become sluggish. The accumulation of heat leads to Yong abscesses or Ju sores. Therefore, among the formulas for treating Yong and Ju, those involving moxibustion are used at the beginning stage. The "beginning" refers to the time when cold has invaded but heat has not yet formed. Those using cold poultices are used when heat has already formed, aiming to clear heat to prevent suppuration. Nowadays, many people do not understand this; they do not use warm treatments or moxibustion at the initial stage. The essential formulas presented here are intended for treating conditions that have already taken shape.
If the lesion is red, swollen, and has a pointed head, with a base width within one cun, it is called Jie (furuncle); if wider than one cun, it is called Xiao Yong (small abscess); if the size is like a bean, it is referred to as [missing term].
Formula to treat early-stage Yong abscesses to make them resolve.
Take deer horn and grind it on a whetstone with water. Apply the juice; reapply when dry, and it will resolve. Internally, it is suitable to take Lianqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction) to promote purgation.
Another formula:
Pound fresh adzuki beans, sift them, mix with egg white until paste-like, and apply externally.
Formula for treating newly onset Yong abscesses presenting with redness, heat, and pain.
Burn deer horn alone to ash, mix with vinegar, apply thinly; reapply when dry, and it will naturally resolve.
Another formula:
Pound Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati (Dahuang) alone, mix with vinegar, apply thinly; change when it becomes warm.
Formula for treating early-stage Yong abscesses and Jie furuncles presenting with swelling, redness, heat, and pain.
Grind Rhizoma Pinelliae (Banxia) with water and apply; reapply when dry. For Jie disease, it will resolve. Pinellia dug from wild herbs is superior and highly effective.
For Shi Yong (Stone Abscess): Initially slightly hard, the skin adheres closely to underlying tissue, no redness, tip not very pointed, slight pain and heat which gradually subsides, becoming extremely hard like stone. Hence called Stone Abscess. It is difficult to resolve and does not ripen spontaneously; even if it ripens, it takes about one hundred days.
At the onset, take Fangji Lianqiao Tang (Stephania and Forsythia Decoction) to promote purgation, use white needle therapy to drain qi, and apply Lianshi Poultice. Over several days, it can resolve. If treatment is delayed, it cannot be resolved. If pus has already formed, apply this poultice to accelerate rupture; for shallow pus, use fire needles. After all abscesses ulcerate, apply ointments and powders following the methods for treating Huan Ju (slow-acting sores). At the onset, applying adzuki bean poultice can also cause resolution.
Formula for treating Yong abscesses with hard nodules like stone or large kernels, unchanged color, or persistent Stone Abscesses.
Deer Horn (8 liang, burned to ash) Radix Bupleuri (Bailian) (2 liang) Coarse-grained yellow grinding stone slices (1 jin)
Heat the stone until extremely red, immerse in five sheng of vinegar, reheat, then immerse again until the vinegar reduces by half. Pound the stone into powder, mix with deer horn ash and Bailian powder, combine with remaining vinegar to form a paste. Apply thickly to the abscess; reapply when dry to achieve resolution.
Formula for treating Stone Abscess.
Grinding deer horn and Banxia alone for application is inferior to the above formula.
Formula for treating initial onset of various Yong abscesses, Ju sores, back carbuncles, and breast abscesses.
Powdered Rhizoma Pinelliae (Banxia), mixed with egg white, is excellent for external application. Fresh usage is highly effective; mixing with water for application is also acceptable.
There is a type [missing term] where initial swelling resembles Stone Abscess. The distinguishing feature is that upon palpation, multiple nodular lumps are felt within the area.
Initially, if there is no pain or heat, apply Lianshi Poultice. Internally, take Fangji Lianqiao Tang to promote purgation, which can lead to resolution. If treatment is delayed and suppuration occurs, apply Lianshi Poultice to accelerate ripening. Once ripe, use fire needles and ointment powders, following standard abscess treatment protocols. Applying adzuki bean poultice at the onset can also cause resolution.
Furthermore, Tong Jun stated:
Adzuki Bean Radix Bupleuri (Bailian) Radix Scutellariae (Huangqin) Radix Astragali (Huangqi) Concha Ostreae (Muli)
These five substances, in equal parts, are pounded and sifted. Take one fangcun bi (square-inch spoonful) with wine.
