The methods of herbal decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and bian stones have separate specific prescriptions. The methods of nourishment and daoyin (guiding and pulling) are listed below. The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states that the daoyin method is: stand upright with your back against a wall, holding still, and circulate qi from the head to the feet, then stop. This cures carbuncles, hernias, severe wind pathogens, hemiplegia (偏枯), and various wind-bi syndromes. (Nourishment should involve daoyin; this phrase appears in every section, but here it appears only once.) It also states: extend the toes of both feet upward and hold for five breaths, then stop. This guides away bi syndrome in the waist and back, treats hemiplegia, allows one to hear sounds clearly, and frequently exercises the sensory organs such as the eyes and ears, removing any obstructions. It also states: lean your back straight against the wall, extending both feet and toes. Close your eyes and focus your mind, guiding qi from the head, visualizing it reaching the ten toes of the feet and the soles. Practice this twenty-one times (three sevens), stopping when the palms feel as if they are receiving qi. This refers to guiding qi up to the Niwan Palace (泥丸) and down to the Yongquan point (涌泉). It also states: stand upright leaning against a wall, holding still, and circulate qi from the mouth towards the head before stopping. This treats bi syndrome, severe wind pathogens, and hemiplegia. It also states: keep one foot flat on the ground without moving, while rotating the other foot to the side. Lean the body, and quickly pull both hands back left and right alternately for twenty-one times. This dispels cold wind from the spine and improves the lack of circulation in hemiplegia.
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: Sleeping while drunk facing the wind causes aphonia (loss of voice).
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: When sleeping at night, do not let your ear face an opening or draft; if wind enters the ear, it often leads to facial paralysis (mouth deviation).
The daoyin method in the *Yangsheng Fang* states: Push and pull your hands forward and backward alternately to the extreme limit for twenty-one times, with palms facing down. Lower your head so that the qi from your face descends to the Yongquan (涌泉) and Cangmen (仓门) points. Then exert force for a moment to assume a posture, scatter the qi and relax, until the body's qi is calm. Shake the head and shoulders, tilting front and back and side to side fourteen times (two sevens). This dispels cold blood from the interstices and gradually dissolves tendon stiffness. It also states: Embrace the left knee with both hands, extend the waist, inhale through the nose for seven breaths, then extend the right foot. This removes difficulty in bending, extending, bowing, and rising, as well as pain and wasting in the shins. It also states: Embrace the right knee with both hands, pressing it against the chest. This removes heaviness in the lower body and difficulty in bending and extending. It also states: Sit in a squatting position, extend the right foot, embrace the left knee with both hands, extend the waist, and inhale through the nose, going to the limit for seven breaths. Extend the left foot outward. This removes difficulty in bending and extending, and pain and bi syndrome in the shins when bowing and rising. It also states: Stand upright with the body straight. One hand pushes upward, with the palm open as if pushing an object; the other hand presses downward, as if pressing an object to the limit. Move up and down repeatedly, changing positions twenty-eight times (four sevens). This dispels wind inside the shoulders, cold blood in the shoulder interstices, and tendon spasms in the armpits. It also states: Squat and extend the left foot, embrace the right knee with both hands, straighten the waist, inhale through the nose, going to the limit for seven breaths. Extend the left foot outward. This removes difficulty in bending and extending, and pain in the shins when bowing and rising.
