[Pattern resembling the character "Shui" (Water)]
When the fingerprint at the Wind Section (the first phalanx of the index finger) resembles the character "Shui", it indicates wind-stroke entering the Lung, manifesting as cough and flushed face. When the fingerprint at the Qi Section (the second phalanx) resembles "Shui", it indicates phlegm-fluid above the diaphragm and stagnation due to deficiency accumulation. When the fingerprint at the Life Section (the third phalanx) resembles "Shui", it indicates severe convulsions, malnutrition (Gan syndrome), and complicated convulsive conditions. Regardless of the color, if the pattern extends through all three sections to the tip, it is incurable.
[Pattern resembling the character "Yi"]
When the fingerprint at the Wind Section resembles "Yi", it indicates liver wind-stroke, which is easy to treat. When the fingerprint at the Qi Section resembles "Yi", it indicates wind-stroke. When the fingerprint at the Life Section resembles "Yi" and appears cyan-black, it indicates slow spleen-wind, which is difficult to treat.
[Pattern resembling a curved worm]
When the fingerprint at the Wind Section resembles a curved worm, it indicates Gan disease with accumulations in the chest like horizontal counting rods, and a distended abdomen resembling an inflated pig bladder. When the fingerprint at the Qi Section resembles a curved worm, it indicates filth and accumulation in the Large Intestine. When the fingerprint at the Life Section resembles a curved worm, it indicates transmission from the Heart to the Liver, which is difficult to treat.
[Pattern resembling a ring]
When the fingerprint at the Wind Section resembles a ring, it indicates Gan disease of the Spleen with accumulations. When the fingerprint at the Qi Section resembles a ring, it indicates Gan disease entering the Stomach with vomiting and reflux, which is incurable. When the fingerprint at the Life Section resembles a ring, it is difficult to treat.
[Other miscellaneous patterns]
If such patterns appear at the Wind or Qi Sections, they are easy to treat. If they extend through the Life Section, they are difficult to treat.
If such patterns appear on the hand, face, or sides of the cheeks, they are signs of death.
Summary: The fish-bone pattern often appears in initial convulsive states; the hanging-needle pattern is frequently associated with dysentery; the water-character pattern indicates lung accumulation due to fright; the Yi-character pattern indicates liver injury; the curved-worm pattern indicates impending severe Gan disease; the ring-like pattern indicates kidney deficiency; chaotic patterns indicate extreme parasitic accumulation; and the bead-like appearance indicates a deep and critical condition.
Additionally, the "Outer Eight Brocade Patterns" recorded in another edition:
First, fish-bone pulses moving between fingers, faintly resembling insect movement, originate from the Heart, initially caused by fright from four-legged animals.
Second, cyan-black discoloration of the sclera, with finger patterns like hanging needles, indicating internal and external correspondence, shows that pediatric fright illness has invaded.
Third, patterns at the Tiger's Mouth coiling into curves, due to fright or wind invasion, heat generated by improper breastfeeding, mental confusion with persistent redness of the face.
Fourth, frequent regurgitation, intestinal turning and diarrhea pouring out, finger tips resembling the character "Yi", indicating dampness stagnating in the middle jiao.
Fifth, head shaking and frequent hand clasping, extreme heat causing drowsiness, red-black patterns appearing, resulting from external fright.
Sixth, internal wind remains vigorous, lethargic eyes unable to open, all due to emotional disturbances of anger and joy, leading to disaster.
Seventh, red meridians crossing three joints, accompanied by fontanelle swelling like an abscess; even with miraculous medicines, this illness is hard to conquer.
Eighth, frequent fright and trauma, ceaseless crying and screaming, chaotic patterns appearing across three joints; even without prior illness, this warrants concern.
Inner Eight Brocade Patterns:
Fish-bone pulse: Appears in initial fright states. At the Wind Section, it indicates wind-stroke and phlegm accumulation, treatable. At the Qi Section, it indicates stagnation, treatable. At the Life Section, incurable.
Hanging-needle pulse: Indicates dysentery. At the Wind Section, water-fright is treatable. At the Qi Section, Gan disease in the Lung is incurable. At the Life Section, lung-Gan disease. If extending through all three sections, wind-stroke is incurable.
Water-character pulse: Indicates fright accumulation in the Lung home. At the Wind Section, lung fright accumulation; at the Qi Section, fright; at the Life Section, slow fright, Gan-wind, incurable.
Yi-character pulse: Indicates liver qi injury. At the Wind Section, lung-wind is incurable. At the Qi Section, wind-stroke entering the Lung is incurable. At the Life Section, incurable.
Curved-worm pulse: Indicates severe Gan with accumulation. At the Wind Section, liver-Gan injuring the Spleen. At the Qi Section, Large Intestine receiving accumulation, thick pulse is incurable. At the Life Section, if the pulse is not straight, it is treatable.
Ring-like pulse: Indicates accumulation in the Kidney home. At the Wind Section, Gan disease with accumulation. At the Qi Section, Large Intestine receiving accumulation. At the Life Section, incurable.
Chaotic pattern pulse: Parasites in the Heart, chaotic pulse across three sections, parasites biting Heart and Lung. Initially due to heat, continuous bare feet, red-purple definitely indicates fright. With added redness, irregular eating habits, night terrors. Chaotic patterns across three sections are treatable, indicating kidney accumulation in children.
Flowing-bead pulse: Indicates death or deep critical state. Black spots on fingers with hidden accumulation at the Life Section indicate death. If red spots appear at the Wind Section, expectorant and accumulation-draining methods may be used.
Another verse states: Curved patterns inside indicate tight wind-stroke; curved patterns outside indicate food retention. Thus, various vomitings occur, and milk/food digestion is impaired.
Physician Mao Bin of Changsha transmitted the "Eight Pieces of Brocade for Fright":
When the Tiger's Mouth opens revealing red stars, eyes roll back making identification difficult, this is human fright entering the Heart, with limb twitching and pulling having no fixed limit.
When the Tiger's Mouth reveals black stars, the fontanelle swells or sinks, knowing it was frightened by four-legged animals, rubbing hands on the face incessantly.
When the Tiger's Mouth shows white, the child's illness is water-fright, mouth and eyes open, nose making sounds, sweat beads flowing profusely.
When the Tiger's Mouth shows interlacing cyan, lips are cyan and chest high, only because startled by flying birds, lower abdomen distended with firm qi.
When the Tiger's Mouth shows elongated red, looking up with teeth clenched, having fallen from heights, face dark and hands yellowish.
When the Tiger's Mouth shows yellow, the child was frightened in two places, speaking with dry sweat, black neck warns of disaster.
Center of Tiger's Mouth red, fright from water generates wind, breathing through open mouth, eyes straight, body stiff like a bow.
Tiger's Mouth patterns extending outward and stopping, if this sign appears called fetal fright, whether red, cyan, or black, encountering this means life is doomed.
