In *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang), regarding the syndrome of pediatric wind-stroke with limb immobility: When pathogenic wind invades the limbs and joints, it stagnates in the sinews and vessels. If the wind carries cold pathogens, there will be spasms, tension, and pain; if the wind carries heat pathogens, it leads to flaccidity, weakness, and inability to move voluntarily.
*Waitai Jiyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) records: The *Beiji Fang* (Emergency Formulas) treats conditions where the body assumes an opisthotonos posture (arched back like a bow), limbs are immobile, and the patient is extremely restless and near death.
Qingjiu (Clear Wine, 5 sheng), Jishi Bai (White excrement of chicken, 1 sheng, roasted).
Crush and sieve the above two ingredients, mix them thoroughly, and stir/yang them one thousand times, then administer. Adults take 1 sheng, children take 5 he, and infants take 3 he. This is effective. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies) adopts the same method.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Holy Grace Formulas of the Taiping Era) treats pediatric wind-stroke with hemiplegia, spasticity and stiffness of limbs and joints, and inability to rotate. Formula for Chi Jian Wan (Aralia Pill):
Chi Jian (Tianma / Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Bai Jiangcan (Baijiangcan / Bombyx Batryticatus, lightly fried), Baifuzi (Baifuzi / Rhizoma Typhonii, processed until cracked), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Guixin (Guixin / Cortex Cinnamomi, half tael each); Niuhuang (Niuhuang / Calculus Bovis), Shexiang (Shexiang / Moschus, both finely ground, half fen each); Baihua She (Baihua She / Bungarus multicinctus, 2 liang, soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, roasted until slightly yellow).
Pulverize the above herbs, sieve into fine powder, add the finely ground ingredients, and grind together until uniform. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 5 pills per dose, administered with decoction of Jingjie (Jingjie / Schizonepetae Spica) and Bohe (Bohe / Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), three to four times daily. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and condition.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* treats pediatric wind-stroke with immobile hands and feet, when other medicines are ineffective. It is suitable to take Bimazi San (Castor Seed Powder):
Bimazi (Bimazi / Semen Ricini, 20 seeds, skin removed, separately ground), Que'er Faweng (Que'er Faweng / Nest of Sparrow, 10 units), Ganxie (Ganxie / Scorpio, 30 units), Shiliu (Pomegranate, one large fruit).
For the above four ingredients, remove the seeds and seven-tenths of the flesh from the pomegranate, place the other three herbs inside, wrap tightly in mud to form a ball, and roast slowly over low fire until dry. Roast until red-hot; when the herbal aroma permeates out, it is cooked. After cooling, remove the mud and grind finely. Then add: Ganxie (Scorpio), Banxia (Banxia / Rhizoma Pinelliae, washed seven times in water to remove slipperiness, each 1 fen), Tiannanxing (Tiannanxing / Rhizoma Arisaematis), Baifuzi (Baifuzi / Rhizoma Typhonii, each 1.5 fen).
The above four herbs are used raw, crushed together, and sieved into a fine powder. Add the previously roasted herbs and grind uniformly. Take "one character" (a small measure) per dose, mixed with warm wine. For severe cases, no more than two or three doses are needed. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* treats pediatric wind-stroke with immobile limbs and confused spirit. It is suitable to take Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill):
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, placed in a boiled silk bag with one sheng of black beans, stir-fried until beans are cooked, separately ground and added), Tianzhu Huang (Tianzhu Huang / Borax, finely ground), Xijiao (Xijiao / Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved), Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii, both processed until cracked); Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Dilong (Dilong / Pheretima, Ganxie (Scorpio), all lightly fried, half tael each); Yujin (Yujin / Radix Curcumae), Qiangling (Qiling / Scarabaeus Sibiensis, wings and legs removed, lightly fried), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Shexiang (Moschus, finely ground, each 1 fen); Zhusha (Zhusha / Cinnabar, 1 liang, ground, washed with water), Chantui (Chantui / Cicada Slough, 7 pieces, wings and legs removed, lightly fried), Wushe Rou (Wushe Rou / Strychnos Nux-vomica meat? No, likely Elaphe carinata or similar snake meat, 2 liang, soaked in wine, roasted until slightly yellow), Wuya (Crow, 1 piece, wings and legs removed, wrapped in mud and burned to ash, use 1 liang).
Pulverize the above herbs, sieve into fine powder, mix with the ground ingredients until uniform. Combine with glutinous rice paste to form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 5 pills per dose, administered with warm wine. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.
Zhang Huan's Loulu Tang (Loulu Decoction): Treats pediatric wind-stroke with hemiplegia.
Loulu (Loulu / Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Mutong (Mutong / Caulis Akebiae, chopped), Baifuling (Baifuling / Poria, Danggui (Danggui / Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed and dried), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae, roasted), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, each 1 liang); Gancao (Gancao / Radix Glycyrrhizae, lightly roasted), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica, stems and woody parts removed, each half tael).
Pulverize the above herbs and sieve into fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, 2 slices of Shengjiang (Shengjiang / Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 3 leaves of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Decoct until reduced to 0.5 zhan, strain, and drink while warm.
Zhang Huan's another formula: Banjin San (Half-Gold Powder).
Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, fried until yellow), Quanxie (Scorpio, fried), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae, roasted), Wushe Rou (Snake meat, soaked in wine, skin and bones removed, dried, each 1 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the above into fine powder. Then prepare: Zhusha (Cinnabar, half tael, finely ground, water-washed), Longnao (Longnao / Borneolum Syntheticum, 1 qian, ground).
Mix the above evenly. Take half a qian per dose, mixed with warm wine.
*Baosheng Xin Xiao Fang* (Faithful and Effective Formulas for Preserving Life) contains Qisi Qinggu Dan (Reviving Light Bone Pill): Mainly treats adult and pediatric wind-stroke paralysis, immobile limbs, wind-bi, etc.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, remove root nodes, weigh 5 jin, chop, boil in 2 shi of river water, remove dregs, reduce to paste); Sanggen Baipi (Cortex Morii Radicis, must be self-harvested from underground roots, chopped), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, skin removed), Gangsong (Nardostachyos Radix et Rhizoma, use only root tips, discard rest), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 3.5 liang).
Grind the above six herbs into fine powder, mix uniformly. Combine with the aforementioned Mahuang paste to form pills the size of marbles. Take one pill per dose, dissolve in one zhan of warm wine and drink at once. Induce sweating before sleep. Re-administer after five to seven days; hands and feet should immediately feel light and agile. Also given for pediatric convulsions. Used after resolving phlegm-fluid retention in sudden stroke with excessive salivation. My uncle, Dr. Chang Qizhi, formerly had his sons run a pharmacy. The Reviving Light Bone Pills sold were priced at one guan per pill, and customers filled the doors.
*Zhuang Shi Jia Chuan* (Zhuang Family Transmission) treats pediatric wind-dampness with flaccid sinews and vessels, weak legs and knees, or deviation and pulling of hands and feet, and slurred speech. Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder):
Lingyangjiao (Lingyangjiao / Cornu Saigae Tataricae, shaved), Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove seed heads, each 3 fen), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 2 liang, lightly fried), Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, scrape off rough bark), Fushen (Poria cum Radix), Guanzi Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi, remove rough bark, each half tael), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, remove root head, each 1 liang).
Make the above into coarse powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 1 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhan, strain, and drink warm. Do not restrict timing; take three times daily. If there is heat, add 0.5 yi of Zhuli (Bambusae Sap) and mix. Also treats slurred speech and tongue deviation. Adults may also take it, increasing the dose; it is miraculous.
