(Tai Feng Zhong Feng) Divided into ten categories
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* discusses: When a child is in the womb, the Zang-Fu organs are not yet fully developed, and the Shen Qi (Spiritual Energy) is weak. If the mother's regulation is improper, diet is unregulated, anger is excessive, or movements startle the fetus, or if she sits or lies exposed to wind, or is affected by cold and heat, causing the Cou Li (skin pores and texture) to open, Wind Evil invades the body and enters the fetus. After birth, the evil qi remains in the Zang-Fu organs and cannot be dispersed; furthermore, bathing while exposed to wind, improper wrapping, cold touching the umbilical cord, and wind damaging the limbs, along with irregular breastfeeding, lead to the accumulation of Phlegm-Heat. This results in high fever, vomiting, frequent startling during sleep, restlessness of the heart-mind, convulsions of the hands and feet, rigidity of the body, and retraction of the eyes upward. Hence it is called "Tai Feng" (Fetal Wind). If the Wind-Heat is not eliminated, it transforms into Xian Ji (Epilepsy).
Song from *Shibi Jing* on the thirty-six types of Tai Feng conditions:
This disease in the human world is too profound and subtle; medical practitioners surely know little of it. Within the first hundred days, the infant shares one Qi with the mother; three cycles of the Heavenly Stems constitute the fetal period. After birth, the body heat is like being splashed with boiling water; this fetal heat is due to the mother's obesity. Sores on the forehead are difficult to cure, definitely caused by toxins in the womb and the mother's conduct. Sores on both feet resembling rot indicate that survival past five years is unlikely. Before one month of age, if there is first Mo Kou (mouth closing like a fish mouth), fists clenched, back and waist stiff, it is known that evil toxins have generated in the Zang-Fu. This is limited to the separation of flesh and bone within three days of birth. If a boy's fingers point inward when clenching fists, or a girl's fingers point outward, it is difficult to treat. One must observe adverse prognostic signs; medication is hard to administer at this stage. Furthermore, observe the meridians in the eyebrows. If tendons in the eyebrows show red and blue-green colors (another version says cyan-blue-green. The forty-eight prognoses say: red mixed with crimson), calculate that there is a threat to life, do not doubt. If there is black luster, death is certain (The *Feng Sui Jing* says: red and crimson in the eyebrows. The forty-eight prognoses for this line say: black, green, and cyan). Where can one find a good doctor for this body?
This occurs because the parturient mother has eaten toxic substances or drunk excessively alcohol, causing fetal Qi to become hot. After the child is born, it is as if splashed with boiling water, the body is red with sweat, and breathing is rapid; this is untreatable. If there is white sweat, it is also so. Survival is determined after three years old. Women who engage in sexual intercourse during the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy cause sores on the forehead and feet. Although these sores recur severely, they inevitably lead to Qi Feng (Umbilical Wind), Mo Kou, trismus (lockjaw), and a short lifespan, preventing one from living out their natural years. If the newborn's thumb is clenched such that boys' fingers point outward and girls' fingers point inward, it is a favorable sign (Shun); an unfavorable sign (Ni) leads to death. If the area above and below the eyebrows shows bright, calm red and blue-green, the child lives; if the color is dull, it is an ominous sign, and symptoms must be observed sequentially for regulation.
The song from *Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun* on the forty-eight prognoses of Tai Feng is the same. It adds: If this condition presents with a large head, or a large mother, or excessive care during summer, appearing seven to eight days after birth, look at the thumb. If boys' fingers point outward and girls' inward, and red vessels are seen between the eyebrows, a favorable form indicates safety, while an adverse form indicates death. Many doctors do not recognize this, calling it Pi Feng (Spleen Wind), which is a mistake. One may administer Xi Huang Wan (Rhino Horn Pill) (see formula in the category of all Epilepsy cases), or Da Qing Dan (Great Cyan Pill) (see formula in the category of acute and chronic convulsive diseases). Tong Jing San (Meridian-Passing Powder) should only be given at three to five years of age (see formula in this category).
